The area of Prolog programming is a highly specialized area of AI and computer science. The Visual Prolog software product is a sophisticated modern implementation of the Prolog paradigm and is highly useful in the development of specialized AI, Expert Systems, Ontological Engineering, and other knowledge dependent domains. I really appreciate the fact that Mr. Scott has written this book as it serves as a readable introduction to the language and has a solid start to finish example. It also has supplemental materials on the Visual Prolog website which are quite useful and illustrative. Several of us at the Naval Postgraduate School computer science department have copies of this book, and all agree that it is an excellent introductory book. As a PhD student and computer scientist/systems engineer of 23 years for the military, I am finding this book helpful in the area of my dissertation which combines AI, software engineering and aeronautics, as Visual prolog is one of the platforms that I am using.I recommend this book for all who are specifically using Visual Prolog or some other form of Prolog. I also recommend it for AI folks who are looking for a solid programming language to serve as a foundation for their algorithms. Thanks to Mr. Scott for his efforts to write this book, it is quite appreciated here in Monterey!

A good introduction to programming in Visual Prolog, but doesn't really address AI.

A nice little introduction to Visual Prolog, but not "about Artificial Intelligence" in any sense of the that phrase. It would be a worthwhile addition to the library of someone just learning Visual Prolog, but offers little to the intermediate to advanced practitioner of Visual Prolog.

I want to say how much I appreciated reading the book on Artificial Intelligence using Visual Prolog. After a day of intense reading, I found that the book complements very well the standard publications supported by Visual Prolog, namely the detailed insights on designing a Visual Prolog application.One of my goals is to translate Pro/3 from Visual Prolog 6.3 to Visual Prolog 7.3. I am struggling with the concepts of Vip7.3 but found the example application most revealing into the way an application could be reversed engineered.In short, thank you for a very good reading!

I own hundreds of books related to computer science or programming in general, I read about one a week on average and I have to admit this is the worst book I have read in a very long time.To start with, the layout is somewhat confusing with poor choices of fonts and orientation (you have to rotate the book to look at screenshots). It defies all convention and best practices with the source code being reproduced with a proportional font so that lines of the same length don't align making it very hard to read.The tone is somewhat patronizing with sentences like "don't do this until I tell you" but more importantly, the entire content of the book is exclusively geared toward explaining one sample program which choice is dubious to say the least: extracting the most frequent, least frequent, etc. numbers from 700 lottery draws.Not only that program could be written in less than 20 lines of code in any procedural language but it has nothing to do with "artificial intelligence" and the supposed strengths of Prolog.PS: next time I will be more careful about buying a book which only has two reviews, one of them being written by the author masquerading as a reader.

I love this book! It isn't an easy read but if you are willing to spend the time to read it thoroughly (for me that meant reading it from cover to cover over 7 times before I felt I had a reasonable understanding of the subject) you will understand why Einstein and others of his generation considered Dr. Noether to be one of the greatest mathematicians during the early years of the 20th century. I have a reasonable math background (a B.S. in Applied Mathematics) which was a real help with the subject matter of the book. If you are an upper division math or physics major you should be able to understand the importance of Noether's work. Dr. Neuenschwander does a good job of organizing and presenting the material.

Pedagogic physics starts with specific non-provable rules and derives mathematical statements that lead into mechanics, fields, optics, etc.These rules include the conservation of energy, momentum, etc. This little gem of a book lays the foundation to understand Emmy Noether's work to try to reverse that understanding to state the Lagrangian or Hamiltonian and then if you can establish symmetry then you can prove those assumed rules. The mathematics is beautiful, but the philosophy is not so firmly established. Instead you may have a tautology where the Hamiltonian is just another statement of the conservation law that you are trying to prove. The foundations of the math itself are not independent of assumption. Frankly, I was delighted to find that I could read and comprehend the level of mathematics presented in this book. For me, the most important point was that conservation laws depend upon symmetry or more simply they have qualifying statements. Thus the evolution of physics is really trying to understand the qualifying statements and the logic that variations imply. Thus, we are not stuck with the "Ten Commandments of Physics" but we may strive to find and establish new and more comprehensive rules about the way things work. By all means, read this book.

I am a lifelong student of Physics. I have been a student long beforeI got my PhD in Physics. I am currently a Distinguished Scientist at a Government Lab. This is first review (and possibly the last) I've written for an Amazon book, but I felt compelled to write this after reading this book. It is an excellent example of a 'true' teacher at work who understands how to relate information. This is an art form.In this book you will learn about Emmy Noether and her work in relating a huge class of conservation laws to nature's symmetries. The book explores how symmetry, invariance and conserved quantities are related, quantitatively. The first half of the book is written for self-study by an undergrad Physics student. It deals predominately with functionals (what are they), functional extremals, and when they are invariant. These chapters are the prelude to Noether's Theorem and Rund-Trautman's version of the theorem. This work first inquires whether a functional is invariant under a given transformation, and if it is, it uses Noether's theorem to get the associated conservation law. Next, it examines the inverse problem; given the transformation can you seek the Lagrangian whose functionals are invariant. In each section the author works examples in some detail and carries these examples with further detail in each of the following chapters. It's like a novel for physicists.In the last half of the book, the author teaches you how Noether's theorem is used in quantum field theory. He describes the concept of a field through simple examples and introduces Lagrangian densities. Then Noether's theorem is developed for fields and, in particular, quantum fields. Armed with the machinery from the first half of the book and the knowledge of what fields are, the author addresses the question of given gauge invariance what does Noether's theorem tell us about the properties of the Lagrangian.Like most first addition books, there a few typos in the book but they are easy to spot and do not detract from the beautiful presentation of these subjects.I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

The author states "The reader I have in mind is a junior or senior under graduate physics student, or a beginning physics graduate student. Well do I remember being one of those students myself. Those memories include the frustration of trying to read a manuscript loaded with jargon that assumed a fluency I was still struggling to master. At that point in one's career, details that are incidental trifles to experts can become major sticking points for novices (see the following list of questions for example)." This quote comes from page XI, on page XV and XVI is the list of PRIMARY and AUXILLARY QUESTIONS which he leaves to "us" to discover the answers too. The other thing the author states is before we read this book we should get hold of Emmy Noether's original paper, which the author could have given us in the book (it is public domain). this wonderful book contains not the anatomical information of drawing, (though it very briefly and sparsely touches that, so briefly that it's not worth mentioning) but the force that gives a drawing life; gestures and intention. the reviews that complain of illustration quality obviously have missed the point of the book. this is not about finished drawings, this is about capturing a moment and learning to express emotions and movement through your characters. creating interest with flow and lines and simplicity and building from there is up to you. this can be applied to any style. i've only had this book for one day and i can not put it down. Mr. Stanchfeild explains the thinking process for bringing about believable and relatable poses, how to breathe life and a story into a simple sketch. his explanations are amazingly easy to understand and to apply. rudimentary knowledge of anatomy is required to practice these exercises but even then it will be molded to your needs. i can not say enough good things about this book and will purchase the second when i've finished this one.

Images suck badly in kindle verision, so disappointing trying to see the details that Stanchfield point out in the book only to get pixels and noise please fix this and I'll change my rating to 5 stars :( also is hard to read text written in scanned images this is a lousy work, if you are going to buy the printed version then, 5 stars this info is invaluable, but digital version I may prefer the free version that is out there. Not buying the second book because of this reason.

This is a great book, very poorly bound. Pages were coming out from the first reading. Don't buy this edition. Shame on Focal Press.

The material in the book is fantastic and was just what I was looking for. But the binding of the book is terrible. I purchased it as new and have opened it twice since I have purchased this book and literally 15-20 pages have fallen out. Not impressed.

 Drawn to Life is a collection of lectures from long-time Disney animator Walt Stanchfield. He has worked for Disney since the 1950s.There are two volumes, each with over 400 pages. The reason for two volumes is probably to make the books easier to handle. Both are on gesture and life drawing, even though the cover art might suggest otherwise, especially the one with the lion. You can start reading from any book and any lecture. The order isn't important.There are plenty of essays in the books. Each is a lesson relating to drawing and animation. It can be tangent drawings, creating believable characters, learning to observe, understanding gestures, etc. There are tips on almost anything relating to drawing. Loose and sketchy sketches serves as examples to the lessons.These books are more thinking than drawing technique books. For example, the lessons are not about how to draw perspective, the lessons are about how to use perspective. You can view sample pages for volume one and volume two on amazon.com to get an idea.The books represent a tremendous wealth of information and insight into drawing, animation and observation. After all, Walt Stanchfield has more than 50 years of experience in animation.This book is recommended to those who are into animation and drawing.(More pictures are available on my blog. Most drawing books I've found are structured and tell you how to draw this and how to draw that and just pretty much lays it out to you to get it to look like the picture in the book. Not very creative in my opinion. This one, however, is different. Good different. These are notes by Walt Stanchfield, who taught drawing classes to some of the great animators of today such as Glen Keane, Joe Ranft, Andreas Deja, and Eric Goldberg. In this volume he emphasizes the gesture drawing and capturing the essence of the action. This book is meant for animators who need to think in motion, but can be very helpful for any artist who wants to make their drawing more than "just a drawing". (He uses that phrase a lot). Most of this book is reading material with drawing illustrations to stress the point, but the reading is so fast and almost conversational in a way because he uses humor, drama, stories from his life, and stories from his drawing classes. I always end up smiling in each chapter and even sometimes laughing out loud at some of the things he says. I recommend having a pen or highlighter with you when reading each chapter because he says some pretty enlightening things that hit me like "why did I not think about that in a drawing before?" So whether you be an inspiring animator, such as my self, or just want to better your art, I highly recommend both volumes to really bring your art to life!
