If you travel to the Khyber area today, you will see that the people and landscape how the author describes them have not changed at all. I found his account in so far like a mirror of what I found there in 2007. But although the narrative is in deed anecdotal and to a great extent entertaining it has its lengths as well and I could not find so much adorable in it as the "Guardian" liked it to comment.Maybe the author was also seeking for too much adorable. I found it rather disturbing to include the Sindh into "The Frontier", although it makes some sense, since the clue to the turbulence at the Frontier is more in the Madrasahs of the big cities like Karachi than in the villages of the Khyber Pass area. The people who live there in the Hindukush, mostly Pashtunes (Pathans), although being one of the most ferocious human breed, are indeed great people in so many respects, but - alas! - they often appear not to have education enough to can measure what is right for them when they make political moves. Think of the Germans in Nazi times then you have an idea of what I mean. These people have no right guidance and this makes them so unpredictable. And as the author cites the Superintendent Malik: "Nothing much can be expected of people with empty stomachs!"But even with full stomaches, these people think big of themselves and nothing ever changed this. The British tried already in colonial times, but failed. But the insight of the author was more thorough than mine, when he states something which was not apparent for me, filling a whole chapter in his book: the heroine addiction of the Pakistanis due to the illegal trade along the border line. "In just 2 years the number of users in the country had risen from zero to thirty thousand at least. Most of the addicts were well-to-do people in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore."Although my contact man, a television man in Islamabad, could not (or did not want to) admit that there is such a real problem in a society given to Islam sovereignty, I think the author is right. The fields of Afghanistan are close by and on both sides live Pashtunes who have no objections or remorse to make a business with their fellow men.Narcotics have always been used in this part of the world! "The British East Indian Company merely perpetuated this ruling monopoly in its own heyday, extending the market to China, and on a smaller scale to Europe until the Germans discovered the process of acetylation in which morphine refined further into heroin. Likewise the heroic tribe of the Pashtunes succumb to the un-heroic consume of drugs. They should know it!Drugs where not on my itinerary, but the political ideas of the Pasthunes, openly expressed in Peshawar, the Frontier town. Moorhouse could not oversee the same issue. Do the Pashtunes want their own responsibilities? How far will it go? "What is all the talk about Pashtunistan one day...we have the thing already, right here, right now!"Right, because for them there are no borders at all, they move around wherever and whenever they want. 2 Million Afghans live in Peshawar and around and they have the same cultural and ethnic affinity as their Pashtune cousins in Pakistan. Apart from blood, language and religion they have in common the Pukhtunwali which is the rigid code of the Pashtunes. "They do not accept anybody else`s laws in their tribal territories." The most alien to outsider`s experience "of human behaviour in the twentieth century" could be "Badal", the most powerful element of this code. "It means revenge, either personal or communal, and it is pursued regardless of any other consideration, and with no thought for the time needed to accomplish it, which has occasionally taken more than a generation."Good is Moorehouse in the description of such Pashtune peculiarities. Another example, here about the status of women in the tribal society: "No women in the world can be more jealously possessed by their menfolk than the women of the Pathans, and it is both rare and dangerous for a male outside her family so much as to look upon a Pathan woman`s face." Indeed I saw none at all in Peshawar. And if things go really bad: "The custom is for the woman to be shot by her own father or brother, the man to be executed by his father or uncle. The honour of two families is thereby cleansed of all stain."The Pashtunes did not and do not submit to alien rule, as most Indians did. "They made accommodoations, but many of their tribesmen spent their lives in the desert and the hills, eager to kill any outsider who infringed the smallest tribal claim".Still goes, you have to be a man to be accepted there! And hard to yourself. There is the dramatic topography, the climate that is always harsh, either hot and dusty or savage bitter cold, no warm shower, no restaurants, hard to be successful in what you intend to do!Respectable is that Moorehouse succeeded to get acquainted with so many of these people who show often reservation towards westerners. And he seemed to have his connections. My connection was mainly limited to the ever present Khyber police escort. Only in Peshawar you can move freely. But beware what you say!

Chris spent the last ten years in love with his best friend Daniel who he fixed up with his other bestie Megan who then turned down Daniel's proposal, leaving Chris in the middle of a mess and comforting Daniel. Daniel never gave his relationship with Chris a second thought until he drunkenly kissed him and then couldn't seem to stop picturing Chris naked. The trip to Hawaii started off rocky and proceeded to go down hill really fast when Megan kept appearing like some crazy stalker at every event Chris and Daniel went on. It wasn't until Chris and Daniel finally confronted Megan together that they got to the root of the crazy and discovered all three of them had been hiding secrets from each other for years. Daniel and Chris had a great relationship once they both came out despite more of Megan's craziness coming out. It was nice seeing the reappearance of Larissa from Mister Hard to Get and it'd be nice to continue her story. I laughed so hard at the raptor conversation between Daniel and Chris.'I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.'

This was a fun love story where two bestfriends fall in love once the other realizes he was t as strait as he thought he was. Dan and Chris have been bestfriends since college and Chris always knew he was in love with dan but knew he had no chance with him since he was strait and was just about to propose to his long term girlfriend of 6 years. The proposal didnt go as plan and dan was suppose to celebrate with a trip to Hawaii with his new fiance but instead decides to take his bestfriend. What he thought was just going to be a normal fun get away with his bestfriend turned out to be so much more and Dan starts to discover something new about his sexuality and starts to look at Chris in a different way than before. Then his ex girlfriend shows up on the trip and things become even more complicated than before and to make things worse her parents show up also telling Dan he has to propose to their daughter again then Dan and Chris's relaxing trip turns out to not be so relaxing anymore. I really enjoyed this one. it was a quick and fun read and I couldnt put it down. It was a really cute and sweet love story between friends with some super hot and steamy scenes in the mix.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Intriguing theme. Delightful characters. Chris and Dan are likeable characters. Megan is likeable when you remember she is Chris's best friend from college and keep an open mind for her reactions. Chris crushing on Dan since college. Dan passively crushing on Chris. Megan noticing Chris'college crush but remaining silent. Dan oblivious of Chris' crush. After dating for years, Dan proposes, Megan shuts him down, Chris offers Dan support. What kind of support does Chris offer? Does Dan accept? Dan decides to take his trip to Hawaii inviting Chris. The get on the plane and find out Megan is going as well, two weeks! Will Dan and Megan get back together? Will they have a threesome? Will they all end up alone and single? Very nice story, hysterical in parts. Ms Oliver entertains, amuses and keeps us intrigued to see how it all flows out. Well done! I received an ARC from Booksprout for a review.

There were three people in the relationship. Megan and Dan were the couple that people assumed would marry, Chris was their good friend who had introduced them, helped them get together and was their third wheel. But he really had unrequited love for his college roommate, co-worker Dan. When Dan asks and Megan says no, it opens the door for Dan and Chris to realize that there was more to their relationship than they realized. This was a cute take on the trope about the friend waiting in the wings and a quick fun read.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I really like this author, but not so much this book.First, so many typos. One or two is forgivable, but I lost count after awhile. Boo.Two, awful Dan. He repeatedly put Chris into situations he knew scared him and didn’t care. As friends, we can only rely on the author to know their friendship was amazing, but as a boyfriend? No thanks.Third: Megan was a cartoon of extremes. Blech.

This was just an ok read for me, the good storyline and defined characters kept my interest throughout the entire book!

I loved the relationship between Danny and Chris but I felt like Megans storyline kind of ruined it 50% through. It just felt unnecessary to me and should of wrapped up.

Two men, Chris and Daniel, have been friends for 10 years. Chris is gay but keeps himself firmly in the closet to hide his feelings for his best friend Dan. Dan is probably bisexual, but has buried his "gay" feelings so deep that he would be knocking on his neighbor's wall if he had a neighbor. Pushed by Chris towards his female best friend, Megan, things are status quo until Daniel decides to propose to her in front of family and friends. A firm no and Dan turns to Chris and his eyes open to something he has buried for years. He has feelings for Chris. Going to Hawaii together...followed by Megan, they both start to open up to their feelings. Things are not easy or smooth. Megan invades their lives with her own problems and they find themselves in turmoil. Do Dan and Chris open up to each other? How do they deal with their own problems and those of Megan? A entertaining story with enough angst and turmoil to add spice. My only problem with the story is that is desperately needed to be edited. I did feel it affected the way I read the story because I had to stop and figure out what and who the author was talking about more often than I wanted too. Otherwise and excellent story and the errors should not keep the reader from enjoying this story.

The book discussion group met in March 2017 to enthusiastically discuss this. Wow, we loved this book. Most of us had seen the movie at some point in the past (and a few of us had seen the Oprah-produced Broadway musical), but it turns out this is a favorite book of a few members of the group and everybody liked it lot. We rarely get this kind of universal praise for a book, so you know that if you didn't read it for group, you should still definitely put it on your list of books to read. Most of us agreed that the language is tough and off-putting for the first few letters, but you both get used to the odd spellings and grammar and also the writing gets better at Celie writes more. After eight or ten letters, it all seems pretty normal. The violence and cruelty is also tough and off-putting in the first part of the book but again, it gets less violent and you get used to it (what a horrifying thought!) as the novel continues. The words that readers used to describe the events and language in the novel are "epic," "biblical," "powerful," and finally "beautiful."The story seems huge and the family tree is complicated with parents, step-parents, unacknowledged parents, forced marriages, lovers and mistresses, as well as two dead unnamed mothers. But the major characters are clearly defined and change during the novel and, unlike many novels, the changes are clearly explained and well motivated by events in the novel.Celie is so desperate to be loved that she loves everyone else without thinking of herself. The men are largely evil (this is probably a valid criticism of the novel) who are forced to learn and change by the strong and far more admirable women who shape them.We enjoyed discussing butch and femme women (as well as the stupidly masculine men as compared to the loving and generous men), the open lesbianism, and the alternate Christian theology presented largely by the openly sexual Shug.I thought that the African letters from Nettie were a bit dry and anthropological compared to Celie's personal and emotive letters. And a few of the readers thought that the ending was perhaps too happy with everyone turning out to be a better, more evolved character. But these are quibbles compared to the well-drawn characters, the wide scope, the emotional fulfillment, and the positive changes that most of the characters undergo.

The novel, The Color Purple, is about the main character, Celie, and her sister Nettie. Some other characters are Celie and Nettie’s stepfather, Celie’s husband, and Celie’s lover, Shug. It uses detailed imagery to paint a picture of all of the characters, their physical and emotional attributes. The main theme throughout the novel is how people of certain races and genders are mistreated throughout the era of the 1940s. The main character, Celie, is abused by her stepfather, verbally and physically. It shows her struggle from being stuck in his clutches, to becoming her own person, and earning her independence. She discovers things about herself, and discovers things about other people, and what they mean to her in certain aspects of her life. My favorite character was Celie, this is because the reader can see the progress she makes over the course of the book, and I think the strength that she finds within herself is inspiring and encouraging. I relate to Celie, and all the other characters in the book that have been mistreated, or abused. This is because I empathize for them, and I have had friends that have been mistreated, and I understand how it affects a person's well being, and besides that, their self esteem. I loved the book, I loved the type of insight it gave into an aspect of life that no other author really covers. My favorite part of this book was the part where Celie begins to realize that she is worth more than what she is being given. Through the support of her lover, Shug, she gains self-confidence and realizes that she did not deserve the horrible treatment that she received throughout her entire life. She had to withstand being molested by her step-father, basically being held captive by him, and then in a sense, he “sold” her to the man he thought would need her housekeeping skills the most. She constantly had to go through only being thought of as a piece of meat, and property, almost the maid of every house she walked into. The only thing I would change about this book would be the beginning of the exchange of letters between Nettie and Celie, the first section where it is just about 20 pages of Nettie’s letters to Celie are a bit hard to grasp and get interested in enough to get through that section. Although I am happy I did, because past that, the book was amazing! I read about what was happening in the African village that nettie was in, but also got to see what was happening in Celie’s life. I would definitely recommend this book to any of my friends, it has a great insight on the lives of black women in the 1940s, and unique.

Review

“Easy, smart, and fun to read." –Men's Journal "With this book in hand, your 12 bottles will provide at least a year’s worth of excellent drinks, both classic and modern.” –Wall Street Journal“It's the bane of the home mixologist -- complicated cocktail recipes that call for multiple (and often pricey) esoteric liquors doomed to be used once, then linger for years at the back of the cabinet. Convinced there had to be a better way to stock a bar, Lesley Jacobs Solmonson and husband David Solmonson set out to cull the cocktail herd and home in on only the most essential ingredients for great drinking.” – J.M. Hirsch, Associated Press “Starting a home bar from scratch can be daunting and expensive… With the right selection, you can keep your stash simple and still be able to make just about every cocktail you could imagine.” – Brooklynmagazine “Make enough cocktails to last you a lifetime. Limited to only seven spirits, one liqueur, two vermouths and two styles of bitters, you will indeed have a collection that in many ways will exceed most typical bars around the country.” – Good Spirits News “Here’s to smart barkeeping: Make hundreds of cocktails from a mere dozen bottles.” – Cooking Light “A great home bar is an abridged one… The 12 Bottle Bar offers tips on stocking enough liquor to keep your cocktail list large but your investment small.” – Los Angeles magazine “An innovative idea.” –Town & Country “Covers the bases of modern cocktail making thoroughly.” – Kindred Cocktails “Maximum cocktail potential from just a few bottles.” – Liquor.com “The perfect precursor to a establishing a successful home or café beverage program.” – Fresh Cup “How many cocktails could you make using just 12 bottles without sacrificing flavor, technique, or creativity? The answer: enough to give your local molecular mixologist a run for his money.” – Publishers Weekly (AP)

I like the idea of setting up a bar with a specific set of liquors and having a bunch of really good drinks you can build a real repertoire from. The drinks are chosen carefully and each has its bit of trivia attached so you can come off sounding much smarter than you are. Bonus points for smaller bottle sets that can get you started at a lower price and/or smaller bar space because the small sets can also function for picnics and the like. Excellent book for novices as well as for pros looking to shake up their routine.

This is a great book for not only someone that wants to start a home bar but for someone that wants to learn a bit of history, many recipes (as well as versions of) and tips/tricks of the trade. This book is written very well, enjoyable to read and full of all kinds of information.I have always enjoyed a good cocktail, but they always seem to be shrouded in some secret bar tenders socity that makes it impossible to recreate at home. This unlocks the secrets and makes it easy and practical to do at home!!Congrats and thanks.

As someone getting into cocktail making and mixology, this was a perfect beginner book. The "12 bottle" part is a little bit deceiving because sometimes it calls for funky ingredients but I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to make cocktails. It also includes a walk-through of the different classes of cocktails (sours, old fashioneds, slings, etc) and the history behind each recipe.

An almost perfect home bar book! I especially am glad he included Genever as one of those bottles and left out Tequila. My only complaint, and it isn't really one, is there is quite a few smaller bottles (bitters, etc) needed for the cocktails, but his choices for the basic dozen are spot on. It's a book for grownups!

On the one hand, this is an excellent collection of relatively simple drinks. On the other hand, you can't just use the 12 Bottles and be done with the entire thing. You gotta make all these weird syrups and mixes

Bought this book as a gift but I had a chance to look through it. Great little beginning guide to building a home bar around 12 basic bottles with some good cocktail recipes. Will definitely come in handy.

Great book I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to start a nice home bar and the fact that they give different options from basic to top shelf. The plethora of recipes in each spirit category helps to keep things from getting confusing.

I really enjoyed the history of the different spirits and drinks, and it's a great resource on homemade mixers, syrups, and cordials. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who's looking for a strictly recipe book because the organization and variety of drinks in the book leave something to be desired.I'm also not a fan of the section on Genever, it just strikes me as pretentious (ooh look at this alcohol you've never heard of!).
