Ditto on the favorable reviews -- this gives a great history of influential artists and themes over the years, from early 1800's up through the 1950's. Focused mainly on American artists and old-school themes, but also includes a little on some of the great Brit, Nordic and Japanese artists as well. Nice balance of historic photos, flash and text, and well organized thematically. Very informative for those looking for a bit of background or researching their next ink.

A good mix of well-known and unknown tattoo artists throughout history. Solid blending of flash and narrative, as well.

This book is awesome...plenty of "olde tyme" tattoo flash for reference. People talk about "old school" all the time and don't really know what they're talking about...this book is entirely compiled of the original old school style flash and not awkward modern reinterpretations of it.The drawings contained in this book were created by self-taught untrained artists who only had a limited range of subject matter to emulate and execute. Many of the drawings may seem a bit rough and primitive but remember the art of tattoo has only recently been adopted by the fine arts community and this book represents the traditional artwork of tattooists in the early part of the twentieth century...in it's completely unadulterated form without the self consciousness of modern art. This book is a must for the serious collector or general enthusiast of classical European/American tattoo traditions.

There is no shortage of tattoo books coming out these days.I liked this one because it dealt with old school flash which is my preference.A lot of interesting information and well illustrated.Quite a bit on George Burchett and his work which I found especially good.

I thought maybe there would be some other interesting tidbits of information on the history of what we now consider "vintage tattoos" and maybe some cool pictures - what I got was an amazing surprise.There is so much fantastic and detailed information - none of it boring. The book takes you on an incredible journey through time, style, artists and even equipment.Even if you don't know how to read, the pictures and old flash of these vintage tattoos are worth the price of admission ... ok, the price of the book, but you get the point.Whether you're looking for tattoo ideas, a tattoo history lesson or want to have a unique perspective on vintage tattoos - this is a must add to your bookshelf.

I like reading Barthes essays on various aspects of society. This book is a little slow going in the beginning but does get better as it goes. It is not for the reader with a casual interest in photography but for someone who is interested in understanding the deeper issues that lay in photography and what it means to photograph and be photographed.

Camera Lucida provides a moving and insightful tribute to the author's mother. However, to my mind, the thinking about photography is rather less valuable.Barthes begins by announcing that the subject compels him to dispense with the compulsion to theorizing that seems endemic to French academic writing. A promising and welcome beginning. But Theory keeps intruding, in the form of jargon (the distinction between Operator, Spectator and Spectrum, which is pretty much dropped shortly after being introduced), various dichotomies (which tend to be introduced for the primary purpose of being subverted), the generation of paradoxes, and the usual rather melodramatic "last word" concerning the inexpressible, the ineffable, and of course Death. Despite his promise to utilize as data his own personal experience of photographs in order to reach the essence of "Photography" [sic], Barthes never manages to get beyond the framework of "representation", "likeness" and "referent", all concepts (dating back to Barthes' early work in semiology) that tend to obfuscate rather than reveal how photographs present themselves to our minds. For the first thing to notice about a photograph is that it does not provide a "likeness" of a thing but rather the thing itself, the difference being that in the photograph the thing doesn't exist (here, now). In other words, the theoretical apparatus surrounding the concept of representation is inherently inadequate to understand what a photograph is, but Barthes relies on it (even if in a negative mode) from start to finish. Also annoying is the preciosity of the writing (its delight in its look and sound, suggesting an aesthete rather than a thinker), and the (again) characteristic striving for brilliance for its own sake. It's easier to appear brilliant when obfuscating than when enlightening, because philosophical and aesthetic truth is discovered not when we learn something new (via fresh information or neologisms) but rather when we are able to recall something we already know, but for some reason are unable to acknowledge. For these reasons, I find Barthes' reflections on photography to be at times very interesting and subtle but of limited value.

It's a textbook. It did it's job. Nothing to really ride home about.

This book never cease to make me think about the role of pictures and the way it seduces our senses and memory that is difficult to explain by words. A lot of people arguing on the Barthes insistence on the aura of the pictures, though it's remaining true since the early invention of photography. I'm intrigued by this essay and continually fascinated by this search for meaning in the object of picture. Highly recommended!

Nice insights into the meaning and difference of photographs. Barthes covers mainly portraits and doesn't analyze landscape or still life photography. Also, he doesn't make any comparisons with paintings, which would have made it more interesting. His final chapter on photography as DOA is profound.

An interesting book, not something that I would have read had it not been required. Nonetheless Barthes raises many interesting points and I am sure that for someone involved in photography it would be a much more engaging read. Even for me it proved palatable.

As a fan of the paranormal, cryptozoology, and general heavy weirdness, I'm also a fan of Supernatural. I got this book just to get more background on the show, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the folklore surprisingly accurate. Anyone who's read other sources on the subjects will find that the book is in keeping with a lot of other sources with just a bit of dramatic license taken.If you have a solid background in the lore of various monsters, creatures, religions, and traditions, and can pick out the liberties taken ( it IS a TV show afterall) you could sneak this into your reference library. Or just enjoy it as a companion to the series.

I bought this book for my friend's birthday as she is a huge Supernatural fan. When it arrived I was dismayed to see there were no pictures and only text. Based on that fact I decided to return it and find something I thought she may enjoy more.

If you're a fan of Supernatural, you will really enjoy this book. It’s a great summary of the shows mythology.The item was exactly as advertised, arrived quickly and was in excellent condition. I would purchase again.

it is a great read for kids and adult but what i was wanted was a more detail of the creature,demon,god or whatever they were hunting like they did in a buffy the vampire slayer book i can't remember which book due to i gave it to a friend who than lost it and can't find it again the book is about the show which i have watch so if anyone know a book like that let me know ok

Just a sum up of the monsters and stuff from the show. Gives good details on a few things. But I feel like it could have been made into a multiple book series and that would have been great. If it were like that more details could be given and include more creatures.

I have almost finished this book - and I love it. It's so interesting to read about the mythology upon which the show draws for its supernatural beings.

My favorite book of all time! As soon as I got it, I read the book cover to cover and have read multiple times since! It has all supernatural monsters and things that go bump in the night. It sometimes even has little sections from John Winchesters journal which is awesome! Love learning about the monsters, their history, weaknesses, strengths, where they are found, etc!

I found the book interesting. The fact that there are myths from around the world mixed in with the series makes it come alive
