Highly Recommend. This is an excellent resource to add to your home reference library. You will be truly amazed by how extensive this book is in terms of the single food items, prepared entrées, condiments and ingredients covered as well as portion sizes and preparation methods. If you can eat it, it's likely in here:I have several hickory trees - Hickory Nuts are in here.I like to hunt and fish - in here.My elderly mother has several dietary restrictions. I can look up individual items to verify the quantity of off-limits vitamins and minerals. This book is EXTENSIVE. You will be very happy with this resource if you have limited internet access or prefer book-based reference. This is solely a "data" book with almost no nutrional discussion or theory, therefore, I would pair this book with a Nutrionist's desk reference of some sort.
This large nutrition reference book has all the info you could possibly need. I use it to check potassium levels, sodium levels, sugar levels, and of course calories in food and drink items. VERY HELPFUL TO ME.
I should have read the fine print....this references food PRODUCTS....and food from chain restaurants.neither of which I have any use for.I thought it would have data on actual vegetables, fruits, seeds....etc.
This book is nice with tons of foods listed. The reason for 3 stars is it just basic info, carbs, proteins, fats, sodium and fiber. No potassium, magnesium, or other items that need monitoring. Disappointed!I have revised my star to 4. In the back of the book it has all the minerals and vitamins, but pages upon pages if just baby food! Not as disappointed as before but could have used more useful foods.
I don't believe all values are correct. The counts for some fresh vegetables and fruit are different from my three other books and the research I've got from web sites about fiber, carbs and calories.I didn't hate the book as a 1 star would indicate but it is useless to me because I am weighing basic foods before eating and need to keep tract of certain nutrients for health reasons.
I wanted an updated nutrition information source and purchased it alone with another nutritional handbook. I am not yet comfortable with using it to the best advantage but feel it will come as I use it more often. I feel it is important to have accurate nutritional information. I may not always make the best choice but at least I can feel I've made an informed one.
This is the second edition of this material. Years ago, I purchased the first edition. Have enjoyed using that one. Quite complete. But due to wear and many new products on the market, I wanted to get up-to-date data. I am disappointed about some of the features. The previous version provided data for 1 oz measurements for fruits and vegetables (in addition to cup, 1 medium, etc). I have found a number of foods where the new edition does not provide data for this unit of measure. In the previous edition, the gram measurements for protein, carb, and fat content included tenths of a gram (i.e., 3.7). Now, you will only find tenths of a gram displayed under fat and saturated fat.In the section covering fast food and chain restaurants, much of the data under saturated fat is just plain wrong. For example, (restaurant name omitted) chicken thigh has a total of 180 calories and 12 grams of fat (both editions). However, this second edition says this same thigh has 130 grams of saturated fat (the first edition says it has 4 grams, which is much more reasonable). As long as your primary need does not concern the saturated fat content of restaurant food, this is a good source of nutritional information. The main section provides nutritional data for calories, protein, carbs, sodium, fiber, fat, saturated fat, cholesteral, and %fat calories. The second section provides vitamin/mineral data for a much shorter listing of food. (Vitamins & minerals: A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, b6, folate, b12, C, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc). The third, and shortest, section provides the calorie, protein, etc. data for fast-food and chain resaurants.
I had this book for several years and loved it. I misplaced it and had to get another. I found it very informative and useful. Packed with about any nutrition info for whatever kind of diet you are on.
