#132,189 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

It's with great relief that I can give Natalie Keller Reinert's Ambition three stars and wish I could give it three and a half. I was worried for a while. For the fact is, this book starts on Chapter 13.I did need a lot of the information in the first 12 chapters: the source of Jules's maniacal drive for success, where she got the money for her farm, what her days were like. Obviously I needed a lot of the early information: the meeting with Peter and Jules's first disaster, and I needed to meet Mickey, of course. I didn't at all mind being taken back to some of the atmosphere of an outdoors working life in Central Florida, having ridden and taught riding in Tampa for 23 years. But by Chapter 13, I was skimming the text, muttering, "I know this already!" I was thinking, "When is something going to happen in this book?"Fortunately, it did. Peter showed back up, Jules went to a show, we found out a little of the challenge she faced in Mickey, and we saw just how ferociously she sabotaged herself. I got caught up in Jules's struggles, even though I kept wanting to give her a body shake and shout, "Girl, get a read on yourself!"Despite my impatience with her, I found Jules well-drawn, believable. I had a little more trouble with Peter, who comes across as flatter, more of the Good-Looking Guy Who Is Misunderstood requisite in romances than a flesh-and-blood person. I couldn't understand why he kept coming back to someone who treated him so brutally. He wasn't painted as a masochistic type. The writing is lively, capturing the train wrecks so often characteristic of a life with horses with humor and insight. I know whereof Reinert speaks when she takes us through a horse person's learning curves: For example, like Jules, I somehow internalized the idea that it was my job to place the horse's feet at exactly the right take-off spot. The day the trainer I'd found late in life (too late) said to me, "Your job is to set the tempo, pace, and frame; it's his job to jump the fence" was the beginning of one of the most unsettling psychological leaps I could imagine. As a confirmed control freak, letting the horse make his own decisions? Really? Reinert knows her stuff; all the horse-handling in this book rings true.I did raise an eyebrow once or twice. Two women taking full care of 13 horses, riding 9 a day? A trainer as far along as Jules not recognizing a bad shoeing job and a sore-footed horse? On the former point I'll have to cede to Reinert; she's been around a lot more than I have and maybe people can manage that schedule. The latter point I attribute to poetic license; it gives Peter a chance to show his stuff. But still. That said, the completion of Jules's character arc was fitting and worked well.Anybody who has been where Jules and I have both been, watching other people ride while we clean stalls, trying to negotiate personal relations when differing views of what ought to be done with a horse intervene, hanging on to a precarious dream without the basic wherewithal it requires, will have a lot of fun with this book. As will those who dream of being rescued by Peter—not a bad fate.

Absolutely fell in love with Jules. She's an amazing dedicated athlete, yet an outsider with a chip on her shoulder..she's such a relatable, believable heroine. I loved her work ethic and attitude, and her flaws. the secondary and horse characters in this novel are amazing, as is the dialogue. It has an HEA that also leaves you begging for more, and accurately shows the eventing world as one of the toughest and most demanding equine sports. Jules has to fight for everything she's gotten, and just doesn't know when to give up fighting and let things be good, but she's surrounded by people who care about her despite her imperfections. Really love this novel.

This is one of the most accurate horse books out there. The author so clearly knows horses and the eventing world, which is very refreshing. Even better, she can really write and creates interesting, well developed characters. She also is great at descriptions (the Ocala weather is almost its own character) and realistic dialogue.Jules is a complicated person and it was great fun to go along on the journey with her as she matures and grows into herself. While Jules falls into the category of riders without trust funds who break into the big time, it's believable (unlike some other riders in books), because she does have some money from a relative to buy her farm. This is thankfully not one of those annoying books where a rider with no money and no training finds an amazing horse in some unlikely scenario and goes on to win at a national competition. It's also nice that the ending didn't tie everything up in a perfect bow. I'd recommend this book for any reader of horse books who likes a realistic, well written story.

I am most familiar with Natalie's writing through her blogs and articles on horses and racing, so even though eventing is not my sport by any stretch I decided to take a stab at reading "Ambition" (in part because the cover caught my eye.) I ended up being sucked into the story enough I finished reading in two days! The good: Natalie knows horses and it shows without being obnoxious. You almost never have the feeling that something is being explained rather than the narrator's logical internal monologue. The characters are engaging (except see below) and the horses are probably the most realistically-drawn I've read in a long time. I even love the evil pony. Yes, I know "evil pony" is redundant. There's a definite art to writing a character who isn't generically likable or supposed to be likable BECAUSE they're bitchy and Jules is well done for the most part. She has legitimate reasons for her temperament, but we aren't supposed to applaud her as a 'strong female character' simply BECAUSE she's got a bad attitude. Her determination and love of horses is admirable and makes you want to root for her, and you understand her reasons for her 'go it alone' attitude. Up to a point. The bad: I took away one star for two reasons. Jules is a well-rounded character, and we're not supposed to be entirely supportive of her voluntary isolation (emotional and literal.) But the unrelenting nature of her attitude does start to grate after a while. She's so negative at times it becomes hard to sympathize, especially when she is in so deep over her head with a horse and will not ask for help, the hallmark of a good horsewoman. Also, Peter sticks out among the characters as being so perfect it's 1. hard to believe and 2. hard to understand why he's so extremely persistent (nicely!) in pursuing Jules when she's at best terse with him. The other reason is the rather abrupt ending. First, the build-up lead me to expect more to the accident than a minor fracture that's hardly worth mentioning. Second, as other reviewers have noted, the leap from the chapter-ending accident to "weeks later" in the last chapter is very abrupt. Of course, it's also a good sign, as I wasn't really ready for the book to be over!

#743,256 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Here's one of the funniest anecdotes from "Beer and Circus." It's actually a Jimmy John advertisement, written by a witty undergraduate at an American college town:Q: HEY JIMMY JOHN: Why is the University president's house so big?A: The president represents all that is important to our school as an institution of higher learning. These hallowed and noble academic grounds are the fertile fields upon which the future of our nation is grown. And the University president and the house he lives in must demonstrate to all the priority we place on this importation mission.Q: Why is the coach's house even bigger?A: No comment.Murray Sperber lacks the passion and the eloquence of Neil Postman, but he makes it up with the logic and craftsmanship of his argument. A professor of English and American studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Professor Sperber is a contemporary of Bob Knight, the wildly successful coach of the UI basketball team who bullied his players as much as he bullied reporters and the college president. There's very little nuance and subtlety in Sperber's argument, mainly because he feels that there doesn't have to be. Right now, colleges are run like corporations with the mindset of the three Rs -- recruiting fee-paying students, retaining them, and renewing alumni support. Treating students like consumers has meant that colleges -- especially the publicly-funded state universities -- have turned away from their historical mission of turning out well-educated citizens of a democracy into a four-year playhouse in which students have access to be most lavish recreational and sports facilities, comfortable dormitories, and sports games -- but not to a professor who will challenge them to think critically and who will mark up the grammatical errors in their papers. That's because professors aren't supposed to teach -- they're supposed to be conducting research, writing books, appearing on CNN, and winning federal grants so that the colleges can look good.Professors don't teach, students don't learn, and American colleges have become nothing more than "beer and circus." That's about right.

Professor Murray Sperber presents a critique of giant, public, Research I/Division I universities, particularly of the low quality of education that many of their undergraduates get. It is well written and an entertaining read, and much of the criticism is spot-on correct. I think he misses some key points, though. These universities are a very American concept. They let in just about anyone. They take their money, and that's important for the existence of the enterprise. They then give the students a chance. Some do very well, even if they aren't in the honors college: I've seen it done. Some don't, but many of these seem placated with the "beer and circus" available at these schools.Professor Sperber doesn't seem to realize that education is fundamentally a self-directed activity. One gets out of it what one puts into it, and one needs to pursue it actively. If this message hasn't been made clear to students previously, it ought to be repeated to them clearly upon arrival at the university.Sperber does not like large classes, which are common at large universities. I agree that teaching them well does take special effort and skill. Still, several of the best classes I had when I was an undergraduate during the `70s had hundreds of students in them. They were good because the instructors knew their subjects well, and presented them well.Annoyingly many small classes I took were among the worst, for several reasons. Some instructors had poor communications skills. Some clearly put little or no effort into their teaching, and frequently came to class unprepared. Disturbingly many didn't know their subject well, because they hadn't done any research in many years and so were out of date.I resolved never to be like that. Life loves its ironies, of course: now that I'm a professor, I have no shortage of students who squander the opportunities I knock myself out to make for them.Almost none of the students from my classes of over 100 ever come to my office hours for help. Whose fault is that? If you accuse me of being intimidating, oh honestly, are we dealing with adults, or with hothouse flowers? I have quite a lot to do during the day, so why should I spend my limited time on people who would get fired, if they did any job in the world the way they are doing college?Sperber decries honors colleges, which didn't exist when he was a student in the '50s, when "all students were treated equally." He doesn't seem to realize that attitudes have changed. College is no longer regarded as a privilege, as it was in the '50s: many students today see college as an entitlement. Honors colleges don't choose their students at random: they do so by academic merit, both before and during college. Students who did not do well in high school can still get into an honors college, if they build a strong record once they're in college. They can also get booted from an honors college if they let their grades slip. Honors colleges therefore do too improve the education of all students: they provide a goal for ambitious students to work for, they attract students who may have attended more selective universities, and by doing this they prevent everyone from sliding into mediocrity.Too much hand-holding can be harmful to education. I am often ashamed by how much I get wheedled into doing, particularly since so little of it appears to do any good. Peter Sacks discusses this in "Generation X Goes to College." I think the "sink or swim" approach often used at R1 universities has much to be said for it, particularly for cultivating student initiative. Why is it that universities are constantly criticized for being unlike "the real world," but then when one makes them that way, by holding students responsible for their education, the students so often resent it?During the 1960s, student protests did away with "in loco parentis," and instituted anonymous student evaluations of teachers. The students insisted that since they were over 18, they were entitled to be treated as adults. So, now that they say they're adults, who is ultimately responsible for their education? The students are! We have seen cases where reforms were attempted, and there was a hue and cry, which came from the students. One example was at Sperber's very university: remember the incident when someone threw a billiard ball through the university president's window when he tried to crack down on frats? Remember the "Right to Party" riots at Michigan State, made fun of by Doonesbury?Much of the logic that Professor Sperber uses to bolster his arguments is questionable. I really dig how he rips into "the student-faculty non-aggression pact." What, was this some sort of formal treaty, negotiated by the United Nations and on display in a glass case at the National Archives? The research mission of the university is important, particularly since so little basic research is being done anymore by the private sector. Drop that ball, and it will be bad for the economy. It's true that just being a good researcher is not a sufficient condition for being a good teacher, but many of the worst instructors I had when I was an undergraduate were that way precisely because they were non-researchers. (I once had a good argument about the contrapositive with a philosophy professor during an intro to logic course, despite there being 600 other undergraduates in the class.)I agree that too much emphasis on athletics can be a bad influence. Still, Professor Sperber doesn't really make the case in this book that this definitely is detrimental to education. Maybe he does this in his other books, which I haven't read, but he doesn't do this convincingly in this one: it's no more than an argument equating correlation with causation. Some of the reviews above complain that these universities "cheat their undergraduates." They ought to realize that this would be quite impossible without these undergraduates' full complicity and enthusiastic participation. It has always been possible to get a good education at these universities. Spending 5-6 years in drunken stupor (see The Five-Year Party: How Colleges Have Given Up on Educating Your Child and What You Can Do About It) is entirely avoidable.

Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm: A New English Version (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition), by Philip Pullman

Review

“Pullman’s Fairy Tales offers something unique: the chance to watch a master storyteller think through these most foundational of tales. . . . It is fascinating.” —The New York Times “You didn’t know you needed to reread Grimm. You do. This is a grand and great book. . . . I read it ravenously, rapturously.” —Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked and Making Mischief: A Maurice Sendak Appreciation “Zippy! . . . These tales are about plot and economy and speed [and] make great bedtime read-alouds for children who can handle a little gore. . . . The original tales weren’t for children, of course; they were for everyone. So is this book. . . . Pullman is both erudite and funny. . . . He has fun with dialogue, and is particularly snappy with dwarfs. . . . You know what? He crushes it, as the youth of today are wont to say. . . . His translations are perfection.” —The New York Times Book Review “It is such a pleasure to read these tales again, to experience their strangeness and richness, their violence and beauty, their sheer nonsense. . . . Reading Pullman’s version it is impossible not to hear Pullman’s own gentle voice; he is present on every page. . . . [His] interventions work brilliantly.” —The Boston Globe “These wonder tales . . . compel belief as powerfully as any adventure or thriller.” —Marina Warner, The Times Literary Supplement “Excellent . . . His beginnings are like invitations that cannot be refused. . . . Pullman shows how completely he understands the Grimms. . . . [He] pays homage to the Brothers’ pioneer work and simultaneously breathes new life into a great, venerable tradition of magical storytelling.” —Jack Zipes, Los Angeles Review of Books “A real pleasure to read . . . This is the kind of writing that stands up to years of bedtime repetition. . . . The author’s best appearances are in the notes, which are often as entertaining as the stories themselves. . . . Swiftness and clarity, he says, were his guiding principles; to which he has added wit and invention. . . . Beautiful or grotesque, the mad poetry of these tales is often delightfully funny too.” —The Economist

The Economist (1-year auto-renewal) recommended Philip Pullman's new anthology of Grimm's fairytales among their annual review of books. I was not disappointed. Many of the stories will be familiar to readers either through Disney adaptations (Cinderella,Snow White) or from other collections or adaptations / variations of the folk stories collected by the Grimm brothers (Folktales of England (Folktales of the World),Russian Fairy Tales (Pantheon Fairy Tale and Folklore Library). Here, Pullman has 50 stories adopted from Grimm's Fairy Tales: Complete and Illustrated (Over 200 Fairy Tales, with Illustrations, and Bonus Features), some clarified, all with a brief annotation on their origins and variations. What pleased and suprised me most were the variety and number of stories I had never heard before: "The Boy Who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers" (also known as 'The Man Who Did Not Know Fear' or 'The Dead Man's Arm'), "Godfather Death" ('The Land Where No One Ever Dies') and "Iron Hans" ('Three-For-A-Pot', 'Prince Ivan and Princess Martha') were among my favorites. Aside from the tales themselves - which were like revisiting an old friend - the annotation was particularly interesting, Pullman often discussing the morality tales they represent (as with "Little Red Riding Hood") and the variations between strories. As an intellecutal exercise, the book would have benefitted from greater attention to these variations in storytelling and longer exposition on the morality tales within them. (If this is of interest, I strongly recommend Maria Tartar's Off with Their Heads! Fairy Tales and the Culture of Childhood.) As a collection of children's stories, I would have expected some illustrations to accompany the tales, the better to hold and keep the interest of a child to whom the stories are being read to or read by. Nonetheless, it is a wonderful collection of fairytales, with a suprising number of stories that readers may be unfamiliar with and which are a lot of fun to read.

Terrific re-tellings of the stories. These aren't translations, strictly speaking. The language is modernized, and current idiom pops up everywhere. Under less skilled direction this might mar the stories, but not here. Everything is nicely judged. Great version of the Grimm stuff, though of course only a small selection. You know, I suppose, that most of this material isn't suitable for children--not modern children, anyhow. This isn’t exactly Tinkerbell and her Fairy Friends. There's some serious brutality, and from story to story a repeated fixation on cannibalism. You get the feeling children were so poor they really did think their parents might eat them. Just imagine you're very small, and are sitting at the dinner table, and there really is almost nothing for dinner. Your parents are very unhappy . . . and then they look at you . . . they look at you funny. Nowadays your parents only eat you emotionally. Let's see, which is worse?

First of all, Pullman! Then Grimm! How awesome is that combination? I thoroughly enjoyed Pullman's commentary at the end of each tale...his notes about the origin of the tale, and his own opinion...I especially loved his line about Jungian twaddle! He loves these tales...and accepts them for what they are. He's retold, reconstructed, 53 tales, as neatly and simply as he can. He keeps the original pacing, the characters. The spare plot details.Four new (to me) tales are my favorites:"The Riddle," echoed by TURANDOT, "The Juniper Tree," in PUllman's words: "For beauty, for horror, for perfection of fomr, this story has no equal. "The Two Travelling Companions" gives us a picture of good and evil in a new way. "The Goose Girl at the Spring" with flashes of KING LEAR.Pullman's respect for the tales brings this whole thing to life. Loved reading old favorite and new favorites

I'm familiar with most of these stories already - I think I was hoping for stories that were new to me. I was also hoping for some more historical detail and analysis, but what Pullman has added is all quite good, and there were things I didn't know, so it was worth the price. Also, the stories really aren't as horrible as a lot of the garbage kids read nowadays, so don't be afraid to let your 5th grader read them.

Not all that different from the familiar translations. Pullman’s brief, insightful commentaries on each story enrich the tales with historical & literary context.

In some form or another you know a small portion of the fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm. Or you think you do. Maybe you've seen the Disney versions of Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. Beautiful, but sanitized. Or maybe you grew up in the 80s/90s and remember the Brothers Grimm cartoons that showed up on Nickelodean. Seriously, it was kind of cool. And maybe you know about Rapunzel, Hansel & Gretel and a couple others. But all that is only the tip of the iceberg. In this excellent collection, fifty tales are presented to you. You'll find the usual - princesses in distress, wicked witches, and handsome princes. But you'll also encounter enchanted fishes that grant you wishes, bewitched frogs, a mouse, bird and sausage who set up house, trees that grant wishes, demons who makes deals, evil kings, beautiful queens, dancing shoes, evil mermaids who kidnap men, and worlds of enchantment. At the end of each tale is a little bit of analysis by Pullman as well as a comparison of how the story fits into the world it was created and how it compares to other fairy tales.I'm a fan of fairy tales. Both on the merits of the story and on what they can reveal about the society they describe. And Pullman does a great job of retelling the classics we think we know and introducing us to a number of stories that should be classics; I'm looking at you The Fisherman and His Wife. So yes, do read this if you're interested in the subject.
