WOW! I was very reluctant to purchase this book after buying so many STARR test prep books for my fifth grader. After failing the test in April of 2015, I purchased this book. Note the publish date for this book is 2015. He retests in May and this will no doubt improve his score. We have gotten far better advice from this book than instruction he has received at the acceleration program at school. There is no useless information, nor any advice in this book that comes with the other study aides I have purchased (paid more for those, I might add). Great book, very grateful to the authors and publishers for putting this information together. I just wish that I'd have purchased this book earlier. Buy it for your kid, you will not regret it.

$28+ for 80 pages with limited study guides and ONLY TWO practice tests! I feel ripped off when I received the book. This book may be good for quick study and review. But for the price, I expected for more. Not really happy with this purchase.

This is an expensive STUDY GUIDE with very few questions. My son is not interested in the lengthy write ups, then he look at the questions and finished them in no time.

Fantastic resource! My tutoring student didn't understand the vocabulary for light after the classroom lesson. We read through the pages in this book and it all made sense. Thank you for a very useful resource.

This is the only product of this type I've purchased, but it has been excellent for my daughter. Its not too long, but is thorough. I know her test scores will increase because of this product.

Very limited set of questions. All topics are covered; but only to the extent where you can figure out how well the kid knows that particular topic. I think it is expensive for what it provides. There are many resources online for free or cheap that provide similar information.

We are very happy with Mometrix Test Preparation. It is helping my kids prepare for the STAAR test. We did find it very helpful.

not up to what they are studying at school, seems much easier

Review

"I've read a ton of books and blogs and newsletters about the topics but they're all for bigger orgs with dedicated staff to each task. Your words were the first that I came across that actually spoke to KIOO and me directly. Thank you for that."--Babita Patel, Executive Director, KIOO Project"I read The Little Book of Gold and thought it was so awesome, I'm having the rest of my non-profit's board read it. I feel like reading this has saved me time in not pursuing stuff you think of as non-profit money making. The book is short and concise and worth the read."--Michaela Eaves, Board Member, Washington State Animal Response Team"It was a perfect primer for me as I prepare for a new role in my agency." -Anne Maack, Child Start, Wichita"A valuable contribution to our colleagues in the nonprofit world--especially those of us in smaller organizations that do not have dedicated fund development staff." -Jose Martinez, Food Bank of Yolo County California

OUTSTANDING! I'm going to add my rave review to all the others left here. In fact, I'm using (and attributing) some of his great ideas in a chapter of a book I've written--it's that good. Man, authors don't usually give such specific advice (and especially, when it's for a subject that is so small, like a micro-nonprofit). It's like other authors worry that you'll steal their ideas, or that nonprofits are all competing with each other and we shouldn't share ideas. Instead, Erik Hanberg gives specific examples for specific context that totally resonates with anyone who has a board (and any nonprofit is always up for fundraising more money). It's funny, the way we see the world and the way the world actually works are often two different things, and this book shows how nonprofits don't just run themselves and exist from the easy goodwill of people's good hearts, rather, it takes actual work on the part of the employees of a nonprofit to gently steer clients, board members, and donors to do what is best for both themselves and the nonprofit (thus setting up a win-win-win-win...). It's so easy to talk only in terms of huge nonprofit organizations, like most books do, rather than the realities of a small nonprofit, and I LOVE that this book goes into such detail and such specifics. WELL DONE!!!!

I loved the little book of gold. It had so many practical tips in it. I especially loved the story about Linda and how it weaved through the whole book and gave so many actionable tips.As a consultant working with small nonprofits, I could absolutely relate. This book helped steer the little guys away from doing things they shouldn't be doing and kept them focused on what they should! And of course as a recurring gift guru, I loved the fact that it referred to making recurring donations as a great way to help provide sustainable revenue. Thank you Erik!

I read this and thought it was so awesome, I'm having the rest of my non-profit's board read it. What makes it awesome is that it's thin on theory and heavy on specific methods and details. The author gives links to tools he's developed -- nothing too technical, just spreadsheets and stuff -- and his advice is both well-written and makes sense. I feel like reading this has saved me time in not pursuing stuff you think of as non-profit money making (like most fundraisers), ways to go about asking people for money including really simple formulas for how to arrive at the best number, how to ask people for big donations, when to have networking events, who your best bets are (not who you think!), and what role the board in an organization should play. The author has very good real world experience, and the information feels genuine and trustworthy. The book is short and concise and worth the read.

This book is practical and methodical. Read by the author, it is not read as entertainment, as some audio voice professionals read a book. This is read by the author and is paced in a calm, and intentional pace for the listener to relate to the information, process it and retain it. He gives example stories of fictional people in a variety of situations (many of which I had not thought about) that need to be navigated through carefully. Definitely an excellent resource for small nonprofits who are just getting started or who are needing a refresher to move to another level of growth and momentum.

As a guy who plans on opening his own non profit organization, I appreciate all the words of wisdomfrom a guy who speaks with the voice of experience. I was surprised and pleased that part of hisadvice is to avoid big events as big money losers. He is also wise in counseling to have a boardwith a wide variety of professions and life experiences. All in all a recommended read for anyonein a non profit or considering one.The reviewer is the author of the Kindle book entitled: Sex Education for AdultsSecrets To Amazing Sex and Happily Ever After Too

Love this book. Easy to read and straight to the point. Very helpfully. We are apparently a tiny non-profit. This shed some light on many good things. Like that a small non-profit had a annual budget if $1,000,000 a year. So like I said we must be a tiny or micro non-profit. Lol.

I am a new fundraising coordinator for a small non-profit, and my experience is on the other side of the table, as a grant administrator. This book has given me a great framework for planning and implementing a fundraising initiative at my small non-profit, beginning with a goal of 100% board donors. He also covers small donations, direct mail, and cultivating relationships with businesses and individuals for large donations. A lot of what he says was common sense to me, but it's good to have it confirmed by someone who seems to know what he's talking about! Plus he gives real examples of how to implement those common sense things. One of my favorite pieces of advice was not to "buy" donations with swag. We give away far too much stuff to attract donations and I bet a lot of it is just a waste of our money. Another of my goals since reading this book is to keep more of what we raise, and not buying donations is number one on the to do list. The book is easy to read, very accessible, and like the other reviewer I'm recommending it to my director and other staff at my organization. It's a great asset to anyone who's inexperienced at fundraising.

I'll confess, first of all, that I bought this book becausea) I'm researching the nonprofit Kindle marketplace on amazon, andb) I've written a book of my own targeted to "small shop fundraisers," Simple Development Systems, that I sell from my site. That said, this is a terrific little book that should be on the bookshelf of every start-up nonprofit. Erik knows what it's like to "do it all" in a one-person shop - that's where he came from. He's got solid advice on board giving, coaching your board to make an ask, understanding donor behavior and knowing your best donor, paying attention to those little things (like expiring credit cards), developing a mailing, and more. A nice little guide - highly recommended!

This is a good summary list of pretty much every private school in Manhattan. It is really aimed at kindergarten-level applications rather than high school (although it could work for high school). My main criticism would be that it does not offer great perspective on the schools or any kind of critique. Rather, it takes each schools' own PR spiel and amplifies it, basically saying that every single school is really great. Typically she describes every head of school as "an inspired, gifted educator" and every schools' curriculum as "award-winning" and "innovative". So it's hard to get a sense of which schools are really better, when according to this author they are all so outstanding. It would be more helpful if she provided less laudatory comments about the school administration and teachers, and more context. Those of us who have sent our kids to private schools know that they aren't all great, and there are quite a few complaints even at the good ones. It would be good to get a sense of that in the book, to better serve the reader.

If you are applying your child to a NYC private school, step 1 in your search is to read this book. The book begins with a comprehensive overview on all aspects of the school admissions process. Then, it takes you through a detailed description of each school, including important information such as birthday cutoffs, enrollment per grade, tuition, financial aid availability, endowment, after-school program availability, and more. It offers parents everything they need to know about NYC private schools in one convenient place - a much easier alternative than reading through each school's individual website (although I do recommend scouring their sites AFTER you've honed your own targeted list of schools). Within each school description, you will learn all you need to guide you in whether or not you want to put that school on your own list and consider it further. You'll find out where the school is located, whether uniforms are required, what their diversity commitment is, how much homework they give, what their after school program and extra-curricular activities are like, whether they have a summer program, and most important, the history of the school, their curriculum, what day-to-day life is like in their program, what parents and kids say about the school, and much more. Victoria Goldman is well-known to all the schools and is given personal, in-depth tours by school heads and admissions directors before she updates each edition of her book. She also speaks to parents and students from each school so that she can give a thorough and balanced review of every program. When I looked at private schools for my own kids, this was my go-to book. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is the perfect starting point for your private school search.

Dated. A handful of new schools don’t show up. Having said that, the school descriptions are a good way to prepare for parent visits during the application season

Really helpful. Thanks for writing this. It will be nice to see author's own rating/ranking.

Useful and convenient overview of the various private schools in NYC but it does not go into enough detail for every school. Some of the reviews on each school are simply summaries of the information contained in the respective school's websites.

This book is best for its description of private schools. It doesn't have much information about the selective public schools.

This book gives you more information about each individual private school in NYC than any other resource you can buy. I can't imagine looking for a private school in Manhattan without having this wonderful guide.

Bought this to research selective public schools, as referred to in the title of this book. Ten thousand students attend these exceptional schools. These authors were so interested in this population that they devoted six paragraphs to their schools; and that was five schools out of MANY schools. I'd call that really mis-titling a book, and I would call that self- serving and unethical.
