I credit this book for quickly getting me up and running 11gR2 on Red Hat Linux. I have years of experience running Oracle on Microsoft Windows servers but I'm new to Linux and this book showed me the way and the tools I would need for installing and navigating Linux O/S, X11, VNC, ASM and bash shell. Great resource and time saver.

Very good mix of relevant OS and Oracle topics. A great reference book for a Linux Oracle DBA, or someone who has to manage a database on Linux, but doesn't have an Oracle DBA background.

Well written, has enough of the facts to be a good guide, scripts are good examples, well explained. This is more of a how than a why book. Product arrived on time and was as advertised.

If you can write c and korn shell script then save your $.

It is wornderful book for DBA's who are trying to switch to LInux platform. Equally useful for others too because I learnt Oracle as well as Linux from this.Please bring these types of books for Unix. and other dedicated topics likeExport/import recipies, Migration recipies etcWow! wonderful

During the 1990s, Bell Labs teamed up with Robert Kelley, a Carnegie Mellon professor and organizational consultant to study what actually made their people productive. This book is the result of a 10-year long assessment.While the focus of the work was on productivity, they studied those who were deemed "stars" at work by peers and superiors. At the time, it was assumed that some pre-determined trait such as intelligence or personality would determine who the stars were. This turned out not to be true, and a good thing because, as Kelley identifies, since the traits of stars are identifiable behaviors (he calls them strategies) then anyone can adopt them and anyone can be a star!Here are the 9 strategies they identified, in order of importance:-Initiative: blazing trails in the organization's white spaces.-Networking: knowing who knows by plugging into the knowledge network-Self-management: managing your whole life at work.-Perspective: getting the big picture.-Followership: checking your ego at the door to lead in assists.-Leadership: doing small-l leadership in a Big-L world.-Teamwork: Getting Real about Teams-Organizational Savvy: Using street smarts in the corporate power zone.-Show-and-tell: Persuading the Right Audience with the right message.Kelley wants to distinguish between what most people perceive these strategies to be and the way that stars actually implement them. For example, with initiative he points out that while average performers think initiative means coming up with ideas to help them do their jobs better, stars view initiative as taking them into the white space beyond their job descriptions. (As a side note, I was struck that his number one characteristic of initiative seems very similar to Covey's first habit "Be Proactive.")Still, I'm having trouble with the easy jump from "most productive workers" to "star." Is the objective to be better than your co-workers so that you get promoted (and they don't) or is it to be more productive, as an individual and as an organization?I'm not sure that it logically follows that those selected as "stars" were necessarily the most productive workers of the enterprise. For example, one of the attributes of the stars was that they tapped into and exploited the expert networks but without the experts there wouldn't be much for the stars to do. One test for a strategy is to think "what if everyone did this" and here I'm not sure this particular trait holds up.At the same time, if these are the traits of the most productive workers then we should be able to increase overall productivity by getting everyone to follow these behaviors.Since the behaviors seem helpful, then what I'm interested in is how would we organize ourselves so that these behaviors are encouraged and naturally arise? You must be wondering why I use the title "A wonderful book to read" and not something else if I were to rate the book 5 stars. This is the first book that I have given full score.I am an avid reader on performance management and the list of criteria to increase productivity and recognition is not new. However, the similarity with other books stops there. Robert E. Kelley put new meaning into the 9 identified criteria to be a star performer. He gave a new meaning to the criteria "initiative", "organisation savvy" and many others. You need to read the book in order to appreciate the meaning in the context that he had deftly written them.I believe thoroughly based on what I read that anyone who could master the 9 criteria stated would become a star performer. However, there is a catch. Robert told the reader that you need to possess all 9 criteria and to practise them concurrently. That is a big challenge because any other management book will give you praises if you could manage to be proficient in one to two of the identified skills.I am not discouraged by the need for all 9 skills to be practised together and so you should not be either. I am going to put what I read into practice and since the average time to see results as Robert stated in the book is 2 years, I will update my review in 2 years time.Ease of reading: 5/5Interesting reading: 4.5/5Value for money (based on what was stated): 5/5Value for money in practice: Will update in 2 years timeProfound new knowledge: 3/5Profound new meaning: 5/5Ease of practice: Will update in 2 years time

I read alot and only once in a few years do I find a book that totally redefines my picture of the world. This is such a book."How to Be a Star at Work" is a must read for every employee who wants to become more effective at work and in life, and managers/recruiters that want to improve their team effectiveness over time. What really impressed me is how much sense it really makes, yet how different the attributes indicated as important to develop are from those most commonly associated with stardom.In that the attributes identified can all be learned and improved throughout a career, it brings me great hope and faith.

You need to read and re-read this book if:1) you are a person with an undergraduate technical degree,working in a business setting.2) you are a person with any type of advanced graduate degree working in any aspect of the private sector.3) you are responsibile for supervising and leading "brainpowered" workers.4)you are involved with technology-based Knowledge Management initiatives in your organization, and you need to know how the highest performing brainpowered workers collect, process, and repackage an organization's business and technical knowlege.The title is a clear and honest summary of the book's contents. Ironically, many of the people who would most benefit from this book would be prone to skip over something with this title, dismissing it as a non-serious or non-useful effort. Do not make that mistake!Take a look inside it, and see that it is in fact a highly credible and useful summary of everyday work practices frequently used by the elite of the high performing brainpowered workers.

Very rare to have a male person of color as the protagonist of a children's story, so when I stumbled upon this gem, I jumped on it! The story tells of Leonard who one day walks through the park on his way home from school. He finds an egg and they become inseparable, even when that egg eventually hatches into a lizard that keeps growing and growing. Leonard must come up with a solution to Buster's growth issue.The story is the perfect length to read to a 3 year old at bedtime. Not too long and not too simple/short. Some pages have one sentence. Others have two to three, and no more than four sentences on a page. I've seen picture books with multiple paragraphs on a page, which isn't really going to hold a toddler/preschooler's attention. Older children who are beginning to read should enjoy this too. I loved the illustrations! Soft, but represented "the city" very well. It was nice to see a major city represented as something not scary, tough, and mean.I should emphasize that isn't a story about an African-American little boy, but rather a story about a boy who just so happens to be African-American. The story wouldn't change whatever race Leonard was. It's just nice to have diversity in our home library for a change.

I'm impressed by how Mark Pett brings an unstudied gentleness to a topic that it usually pretty strong: dinosaurs. Having a kid find a dinosaur egg and hatch it is not, in and of itself, a completely new idea. But the way it's handled in Pett's book certainly is. For one thing, I love that there's a deep, dark part of Central Park where dinosaurs roam and no one has even noticed. The subtle humor continues as Leonard brings the egg back to his apartment tower home: "In his room, Leonard and the egg played together for the entire afternoon." Then there are the disguises, and Buster's sadness, which grows along with his lizardy body. Not to mention the shadowy follower you may not even notice till you flip back through the pages. Along the way, the book is also a love letter to NYC (yay, library lions!). And best of all, we come to an astonishing solution to the problem of how to get Buster back to the park now that he is really big and really green. LIke Pett's earlier book, the wordless The Girl and the Bicycle, Lizard from the Park is tender without being saccharine. The illustrations are beautifully done, too. I like the design on pages such as the spread where Leonard is walking through the woods on the left, and an inset on the right shows him finding the egg (still surrounded by the trees in the larger image). Or the next page, where the apartment tower is shown at the far right in a way that balances nicely against the image of Leonard walking along the city street, an image that carries across the gutter for about 3/4 of the spread. Well, you just have to take a look! The illustrations remind me a little of Bob Graham's work (one of my favorites) and a little of Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes--if Calvin were a nice kid. I recommend you explore New York City with Leonard and Buster. Especially the deepest, darkest part of the park.

Me and my 3 yr old really enjoy this one. It's a simple but delightful story about a mysterious egg a little boy finds in the park. What's inside is the premise of the story. The art is really sweet and we liked the references to New York's Central Park, Natural History Museum, Thanksgiving Day Parade etc.

My 2 year old loves this book and I read it for my daughter’s pre-K class and they all loved the story.

This is such a sweet story, and good for parents trying to explain why we can't take home wild animals as pets. It's full of imagination and the loveliest illustrations.

This book is perfect for my animal and dinosaur loving 6 year old! We even took it to his kindergarten class to read to everyone! It has the best "surprise" ending! We love it so much and the pictures are awesome!

My 3 & 5 year olds love this book and want to read it often. It has very nice illustrations and a cute story that captures their imagination. We brought it on a beach vacation with another family and their kids seemed equal enamored.

It is also a spectacular book on its own merits.

This is an interesting retrospective about kitchenware, specifically wooden bowls, authored by Robin Wood, the well known pole turner who resides in the UK. Mr. Wood has done a good job with the very small number of fragments and whole artifacts that date from Early Modern Europe. The book covers methods of turning a wooden bowl on a human powered lathe in several regions of the world, it is well illustrated with very clear photos, and he discusses bowl and craft turning in the British Isles in both the past and in modern times. He also included a section in the back of the book that shows how he turns bowls and plates out of trees that he sources locally.An excellent book for those interested in the history of lathes and wood craft, advanced woodworkers, and also of interest to archeologists, historians and reinactors.

I was looking for a history of American bowl making and examples of such to assist me in my collecting. This book's focus is European bowls--and only portions of it. Its nice for those reasons but fails completely when it comes to bowls made and used here in North America.

Very well researched. It even inspired my brother in law and I to built two pole lathes and make dozens of bowls. Nice Book, Nice Pictures.

This book gives a sweeping over view of the places where cathedrals were built. The sensibilities of the people coming out of the dark age into an enlightened time is revealed in numerous ways. Karen Ralls seems to know where the interesting and wonderful connections are hidden in the past and she brings them to us in her writing.This book illuminates any person whether of religion or of none religious life views.

Extensive study of Medieval life focusing on the cathedral. Emphasizes the social context over architecture. Filled with interesting details. Well-illustrated.

While it has some good illustrations, I expected more depth to Dr. Rall's writing. I felt I was reading a TV script rather than a scholarly work.

Karen Ralls is the best and her books are beautiful to look at as well as very educational.

In my opinion, this is Dr. Ralls’ best book so far. However, I caution the reader that it is not a book about the architecture of Gothic cathedrals. There are plenty of those. Instead, it is a comprehensive look at exactly what the author says in her subtitle: It is a guide fit for would-be travelers and those interested in history, art, and symbolism describing what you would want to know if you were engaged in a pilgrimage to any or several of these magnificent places---a pilgrimage that may be an actual physical journey or that may be a journey in one’s mind and spirit, or both.As always, very thorough in her research with plenty of references for those who choose to go deeper and with maps and locations of sites to visit, Ralls begins by investigating for us how allowing light into the inner darkness of the new cathedrals began as the idea of Abbot Suger at the abbey church of Saint-Denis outside of Paris. It was, as she says, “an extraordinarily experimental project…its unusual features and beauty stunned everyone present at its unveiling---with its pointed arches, bejeweled stained glass windows, and other unique features never seen before.” Completed in 1144, it was the first truly western Gothic building. Suger described his vision and his intention as exhibiting “continuous light.”Our author traces the development of the great cathedrals that followed, with their high naves, flying buttresses on the outside that support the structure, pointed arches, rib-vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and intricate stone carvings. She particularly emphasizes the process of how these giant edifices were built as a component of medieval society and how they were subsequently used, both inside and outside, not just as great houses of worship but also as community centers, market places, concert halls, and settings for pageants, festivals and feasts. Being both an accomplished musician and an academic herself, Dr. Ralls explains how these cathedrals influenced the development of music and of education at that time.She spends time writing about the importance of the various building tradesmen and their craft guilds---the stonemasons, sculptors, carpenters, metal workers, glass makers, painters---and their progression from apprentices to journeymen to masters who “guarded their trade secrets, special techniques, and initiation rituals very closely.” We begin to see the real importance of the knowledge the Knights Templar brought back from their crusades in the East in terms of building techniques and how it spurred a revival of interest in the numerical and geometric philosophies of Pythagoras and Plato. It is no wonder that the Cistercian spiritual head of the Templars, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a prominent rival to Abbot Suger, would refer to God in a geometric sense, often to the displeasure of the Church in Rome. Chapter 5 further emphasizes the importance of geometry by taking us on a tour of the use of mazes and labyrinths on both the Continent and the British Isles inside Gothic cathedrals as well as outside.In a later chapter, we see the importance of the ancient Vesica Piscis geometric symbol as a “form generator” of the pointed Gothic arch. We learn how the great cathedrals were used as solar observatories and how Roger Bacon, the medieval philosopher, scientist, alchemist, and astronomer was eventually condemned to prison by his fellow Franciscans because his scientific interests were anathema to the Church. We can appreciate how Bacon set the mode for “underground” philosophers and scientists to ingeniously encode their knowledge into Gothic cathedrals using geometric principles and elements of Neo-Platonic philosophy.A good deal of text and some dramatic color photographs of stained glass windows further emphasize the theme of Lux Lucet in Tenebris: “Light shines in Darkness.” But, as Ralls reminds us, the Light is not just what we see shining down inside the church from the vivid colors of glass above. It is the light of Wisdom itself---a reflection of the possibility for inner illumination and truth. And, she adds, “Such connections are available to anyone in the world who can visit and appreciate the beauty of a Gothic building---whether the person is spiritually inclined or not.”Dr. Ralls has assembled in this book some of the most beautiful photographs of both interior and exterior art, architecture, and sculpture taken by a variety of photographers, including the author, herself. It is a fine piece of visual artistry as well as an illuminating text. But, perhaps the most intriguing part of the book comes in the last two chapters. Here I was given information which was new to me, detailed information about the journeys of religious pilgrims to see the various relics, shrines, and tombs at many of the cathedral sites---the preparation, the costs, the dangers and difficulties of travel in medieval times. Fascinating!We are reminded that we, ourselves, are constantly on our own pilgrimage---the pilgrimage of life itself. We can, perhaps, more easily travel than those faithful of centuries ago, but the results on our psyche and on our being will most likely be similar. And, this volume stands as a fitting tribute to those who were responsible for construction and use of those grand buildings we can still visit. As one who has had the fortunate opportunity to experience many of them, I can readily agree with Dr. Ralls when she says, “Pilgrimage is a journey to the center. It is to travel to a sacred place for inspiration and wisdom, to re-connect with the wonder and awe of the Universe, however you choose to define it.”First reviewed in New Dawn magazine, Issue No. 153

Ha, I haven't actually read this yet. I saw Karen on a TV special and thought she was adorable, so I got one of her books.
