I credit this book for quickly getting me up and running 11gR2 on Red Hat Linux. I have years of experience running Oracle on Microsoft Windows servers but I'm new to Linux and this book showed me the way and the tools I would need for installing and navigating Linux O/S, X11, VNC, ASM and bash shell. Great resource and time saver.
Very good mix of relevant OS and Oracle topics. A great reference book for a Linux Oracle DBA, or someone who has to manage a database on Linux, but doesn't have an Oracle DBA background.
Well written, has enough of the facts to be a good guide, scripts are good examples, well explained. This is more of a how than a why book. Product arrived on time and was as advertised.
If you can write c and korn shell script then save your $.
It is wornderful book for DBA's who are trying to switch to LInux platform. Equally useful for others too because I learnt Oracle as well as Linux from this. Please bring these types of books for Unix. and other dedicated topics likeExport/import recipies, Migration recipies etcWow! wonderful
You really need to understand your Linux before taking on this book, and you probably want a good understanding of Oracle as well.
The book was in good condition and looks new. Also it was delivered on time. Great deal for the price.!!
This is an excellent Linux reference for an Oracle DBA.The chapters are as follows:Chapter 1 - Getting StartedChapter 2 - Working in the ShellChapter 3 - Managing Processes and UsersChapter 4 - Creating and Editing FilesChapter 5 - Managing Files and DirectoriesChapter 6 - Archiving and Compressing FilesChapter 7 - Shell ScriptingChapter 8 - Analyzing Server PerformanceChapter 9 - Viewing and Configuring System ResourcesChapter 10 - Managing Server SoftwareChapter 11 - Automating JobsChapter 12 - Implementing ASM on LinuxChapter 13 - Implementing RAC on LinuxChapter 14 - Working Securely Across a NetworkChapter 15 - Managing X WindowsChapter 16 - Managing Remote Servers with VNCThere are also two Appendixes:A - RAID ConceptsB - Server Log FilesMy favorite parts were Chapter 7 and Chapter 11. For DBA's, it is very powerfull to understand how to write shell scripts and automate them. Also, Chapters 12 and 13 are great references for a DBA who has to implement ASM and RAC on Linux. My Linux admin has also used these chapters to look at some OS configuration issues with RAC and ASM as well as querying disks with oracleasm (for ASMLIB).Definitely a great resource that has clear and concise steps to follow to get things up and running. No fluff here.
