Scribbling the Cat is a strange and unsettling book. Like Fuller's two other Rhodesian memoirs, Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight and Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, it's hauntingly evocative and elegantly written. Once more, I was effortlessly transported to Southern Africa, "a land of almost breath-taking beauty or of savage poverty; a land of screaming ghosts or of sun-flung possibilities; a land of inviting warmth or of desperate drought" (143). But unlike the other two Rhodesian memoirs, Scribbling the Cat is elusive and dark and ultimately it loses its momentum. Fuller's charming sense of humor and endearing optimism are largely absent here, replaced, instead, by meandering reflections and a sense of foreboding that is never truly resolved. When reading fiction, I normally try very hard to separate my feelings about the author from my attitudes about the book. With memoir, however, that's a little bit harder to do, because the author is selling not just her story, but also herself, to some extent - her values, impressions and presuppositions. And while I had started to develop a sort of benign "girl crush" on Fuller after reading her two other memoirs, this one left me questioning her character a little bit, and the book as a whole.Instead of focusing on her childhood and family life growing up in Rhodesia, this memoir centers on Fuller's friendship and travels with a man whom she calls "K," an ex-soldier who fought on the losing side of the Rhodesian war. She meets "K" while visiting her parents' fish and banana farm in Zambia, and despite her father's warnings to steer clear of him, Fuller, who seems to be suffering from a kind of spiritual malaise, quickly develops a kindred connection with the man as they travel together alone, often in very intimate settings, through Zimbabwe and Mozambique. "K" is very much reminiscent of Stanley Kowalski , a volatile, choleric soul trapped in a shell of hyper masculinity. It's clear throughout the memoir that Fuller finds herself both repulsed by and strangely attracted to "K", which is problematic, since she is married with two children. Throughout the book, Fuller, who is so transparent in her other memoirs, remains silent on the appropriateness of this arrangement.Fuller probably wouldn't have been able to write this book had "K" not developed romantic feelings for her shortly after their first meeting. And more than a few readers, myself probably included, seem to think that Fuller exploits "K's" feelings order to get the goods---that is, the material she needs to write a compelling story. She's also on a kind of spiritual journey herself, and she thinks that if she can just figure out "K", then she might be able to make sense of her family's own involvement in the war. She expresses her desire to "label ["K"] and write him into coherence," and, by extension, herself. But "K" is a complex person, a professing "born again" Christian who is tormented by the ghosts of his past and driven by an unpredictable brew of sincere faith, erratic superstition, debilitating guilt and blind rage. By the end of both her literal and metaphorical journeys, we know very little about "K," and very little about Fuller and only a little bit more about Africa. Her goal - "to patch together enough words to make sense of [their] lives" (239) - is never realized, and only two major insights are communicated: that war indiscriminately breaks people's bodies and souls and that Fuller indiscriminately breaks men's hearts. The first insight I already suspected before reading this book and the second one I was sad to discover.

I read Ms. Fuller's first book strictly by accident. I thought Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight would have been a political view of the struggle in Rhodesia between the white settlers and the indigenous people. It wasn't, however, and while at first I was disappointed as I kept reading I found a brilliantly told tale of a family that lived in Rhodesia that is very similar to many families I know all over America.Scribbling the Cat is another Fuller memoir set in Africa, and this one is even more personal. The first book tells the story of the Fuller family, and as the mother is the focus of the family the story is truly a mother daughter tale. This book is a story about who Alexandra Fuller became, not how she grew up, and I love it.Just as in the first book, this is a story that is distinctly rooted in Africa, but if you change some of the names and some of the locations, it truly has played out in America as well. Fuller meets a former Rhodesian soldier, warrior more like it, and is awestruck by his lifestyle. He is now a gentleman farmer living in an area that doesn't have many white gentleman farmers, especially ones who in the past were killing their African gentleman farmer counterparts.Fuller does a great job of bringing the reader along on the journey. Her writing style reminds me in a way of Hemingway. Hemingway had a way of making me feel the heat in Key Largo, feeling the strength of the fish in Old Man. Fuller really made me feel the mud on the trail to the farm, the smell of the fruit bearing trees she passes, the heat from the African sun, and most important I felt the affection that the old soldier began to feel for Ms. Fuller, and the confusion Ms. Fuller felt for him.All in all a great book by a great writer. Alexandra Fuller is one of the truly great writers alive today and while she lives in America her heart still resides in the Africa of her childhood. She seems keenly aware of the problems the white Rhodesians inflicted upon their native residents. I definitely feel her sense of, I hate to say it because it is far more complex, but guilt for what happened to the Africans subject to white Rhodesian rule. Her escort, the former Rhodesian soldier, was part of the problem, a very bloody part of the problem, and she truly struggles to get past the things he did. She doesn't make him a villain, but she doesn't deify him either. I can also feel that she would take issue with my use of African in that last paragraph. When I say Rhodesian I am thinking of them as white European settlers. In Ms. Fuller's case, however, she is just as African as any black African subject to Rhodesian rule. Reading between the lines Ms. Fuller is in many ways a victim of the same colonialism many black Africans suffered from. She was white, but hardly wealthy.Throughout this journey I truly had a sense that I am seeing Africa through the eyes of an African, something that Ms. Fuller can't shake, because it is who she is. One great thing I got from this book was fair notice that my simple categorization of the problem, this is white, this is black, this is African, this is European, the European whites were oppressive, the Africans are the victims, speaks to my ignorance of the reality many people are living in these former colonial areas that can't be categorized. Good people had to do bad things to become free, good people did bad things to serve a belief they later realized was wrong.

A brutal story beautifully written. If it were not for the superb use of words, this would have been an unpalatable read. There were times when I felt the author was indulging in voyeurism and exploding the fragility of the soldier. But this is a story that needs to be told. Wars produce no winners and here we read of the tragedy of those who lose.K may appear as a bizarre character, but, having experienced the Mozambique civil war first hand as a hostage of Renamo, K was chillingly real. The scary fact is there are thousands of damaged humans - the debris from past and current civil wars - trying to make sense of their lives. In a strange cathartic way, reading this story helped.

Alexandra Fuller is one of those authors who, for me, can't write enough. After reading every book of hers, I feel like I've lived through intense emotional struggles and awakenings with doses of laughter on the side. She is a gifted writer who is so in tune with her interactions with others, and then she shares the experiences with incredible insight and graceful eloquence. This book is a little different from her childhood/adolescent/family books, however it has the same vivid descriptions of Africa and the same, sometimes shocking, truth about human nature. I really enjoyed it.

I've read many of the stories that originated in the Rhodesian Bush War including the "The Selous Scouts" writtten by their original CO Col Ron Daly- Lewis, which was earth Shattering, as far as I was concerned but this tale by Alexandra Fuller was written on such a human level that it gave a totally different angle to a similar war story but with so much humour and empathy. Totally worth reading if historically true stories are your forte

The Crocodile Who Didn't like Water, by Gemma Merino

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—A little crocodile just can't get too enthused about the water, unlike his siblings, who splash and play in it with abandon. The little guy even uses his tooth fairy money to buy a swim ring. Alas, it is not a helpful solution. Just when he is at his lowest, he feels a sneeze coming on. Lo and behold, out shoots a sizable flame, hilariously setting a diving board on fire. He's actually a dragon! On the following pages, he uses his newly discovered talents to treat his brothers and sisters to a ride in a hot-air balloon and eventually on his winged back. Merino hits it out of the park with delightful artwork that will immediately endear the little dragon to readers and have them giggling cover to cover. She writes with a light, clear hand, letting the illustrations deliver the humor. Readers should look closely for neat little details, adding even more charm to this sweet, funny book about celebrating differences.—Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, AR

That is the question my two- year old asked me every night. She was totally engaged in the book! My 4 - year old was engrossed in the simple but beautiful and expressive artwork and managed to calm herself to listen to the entire story (an amazing feat as parents with 4 year olds will tell you).My only complaint is that the book is actually a bit too short. It was just too much fun....Also let's face it he was totally faking it WE KNOW YOU CAN SWIM MR....er...er...crorodile!

A clever retelling of the Ugly Duckling story. Our protagonist does not run away and hide until he's beautiful and accepted like the aforementioned UD. But rather, he discovered what makes him unique and special while playing with his brothers and sisters. And, they accept him and have fun with him once that transformation occurs. A positive message from a clever book.

This picture book is absolutely adorable. The story is cute, funny, and beautifully illustrated. My storytime kids loved the book and so did the adults. I love it!

It's basically the ugly duckling, but a more entertaining take on the tale. And it's adorable.

Love this book! A great book full of hilarious pictures, great writing, and allows you to make a bunch of wild noises. I bought this for my two year old. I think I'm putting it on my bookshelf instead!

It is just sample and so meaningful!Children should read it first by themselves and parent can explain the message behind this wonderful story the child may not quit get it at first.

I haven't read this one just yet. I purchased through my coworkers advice that it's a fabulous book with many options in extending a lesson, integrating some additional compprehension skills!!!!

I bought this book for my twenty year old, and she loves it. It is the classic ugly duckling story with a twist.

I bought my copy of these two meditations directly from Dr. Joe’s website as a download for $4.95 for the both of them, instead of $14.82 for the CD that’s listed here. He must have read your criticisms and re-recorded it, because the sound quality is decent enough for an mp3 file: 44.1 kHz at 192 kbps (one reviewer here said the CD audio quality was VERY bad). And, there is none of the offending sibilance (hissing sounds) in evidence. His website says, “new edition now includes an introduction by Dr. Joe & new song,” which implies that he must have issued a new recording of these two meditations. So you might want to avoid the older version listed here. That said, the biggest problem I had with these new files is the darn gongs going off. There are three of them in each meditation, one for each week of the program. For the fourth week, you're supposed to meditate through to the end. The induction portion of the meditation does a great job of getting you very relaxed. Then, instead of letting you drift peacefully into the next section (Week 2, if you’re following along with the book) you are hit on the head with a sonic bomb, bringing you right out of your trance. Kinda defeats the purpose of a deep meditation, doesn’t it?My solution was to open the files in a sound editor, isolate the offending gong sounds, and then replace those sections with matching sections from the original music. This was quite a bit of work, but at least now I can either stop when I hear him introducing the next script, or drift peacefully into the next week’s lesson without being gonged over the head. To me, the gongs were a real mood killer when you’re trying to stay in a meditative state.Sorry, Dr. Joe. No more gongs for you, OK?

I truly have a desire to change my life. 1st thing I did was read "Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself." The next step was taken on the New Moon to start Day 1 of the meditation CD. The 1st day was a struggle because my mind & body fought staying present. I continued for the next 6 days each day was easier then the previous day to stay in the zone. Preceded to Phase 2 on day 8 it was basically uneventful did the exercise as required. Day 9 I actually had a break through when doing stage 2 of meditation. I could feel my mind vibrating, maybe it was rewiring itself all I know is something was happening. This is my experience I plan on continuing my morning meditations on schedule as directed in book.

Using this CD has been amazing. After reading the book and doing all of the writing assignments, I was able to expand my self-awareness 10 fold. I am a school social worker who has been doing spiritual work for more than 30 years. Amazingly, I learned so much about my subconscious feelings and thoughts. I have been doing the meditations for 30 days. I have to say, that they are transforming my mind and my life. I have already shared the book. I will soon share the meditations with others. I highly recommend this tool.

Transformational! I bought both the book and the CD. His ideas, methods and program are revolutionary and will help SO many people, no matter how young or old, finally realize their highest potential. Thank you, Dr. Joe! There are many free videos online where you can learn more about his approach. The book and CD brings all of his ideas together concisely, in one place.

These are amazing meditations, however make sure you have enough time to devote to them if you wish to read all the benefits. These are profound, powerful and so expansive!

For the first week I tried the meditation up to the first gong sound and I didn’t really ‘get it’. Once I progressed past that I thought it was absolutely amazing!

Have had anxiety since I was young. The book and tape have been very helpful! I have noticed a reduction in stress. I like his methods and that there is science to back up his ideas. Still reading it and working with the meditation CD's.

I am at present reading this book with a group of women. We get together twice a month to discuss the chapters we hadread. We all find the book format well formulized and the information very interesting. This book offers important informationon how our brains work and the importance of the brain, heart and mind connection.Thank you for writing this and your other books, Dr. Joe Dispenza!

The very best book about Yip Harburg out there. Not just for kids too!

This is a terrific introduction to the art of songwriting and much more disguised as a biography of one of the greatest songwriters.Stotts goes behind and beyond Yip Harburg's most well known songs like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Brother, Can you Spare a Dime." to reveal a thoughtful man who sought to use his extraordinary talents to help others. Harburg explains his thinking behind "Brother Can You Spare a Dime." Based on his experience, "I grew up when America had a dream and its people a hope. The dream collapsed. The system fell apart. This was a good country, on its way to greatness. It had given our immigrants more freedom, more education, more opportunity than they had ever known. What happened?... [the song asks] the universal question of 'why does the man who produces not share in the wealth?'"Harburg was intimately involved in not only with the songwriting in the classic movie "The Wizard of Oz," but in many aspects including the casting, the shape of the plot, and the feel of the story. He says, "I clarified the story. I edited the whole thing... And I added my own." Stotts adds, "Yip emphasized one of his major themes - that the symbols of society are silly because the reality of who we are is inside us."This slender volume touches on and ties together so much. Songwriting, The Wizard of Oz, the history of Broadway and Hollywood musicals, the Depression, the House Un-American Activities Committee, the Blacklist, and the desire of one man to make the world a better place through song. Highly recommended for anyone with any interest in these areas.

When this new book was available for pre-order, I added it to my Wish List immediately. Having been a huge fan of the first book, "How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method," I thought this one would be similar. But it isn't entirely. There are many gems in this book. One in particular changed my thinking about how scenes are made. It was about how each scene should be it's own story with a beginning, middle and end. This book deals with the guidelines of a scene and what's needed to create a strong one. I think this book is ideal for new authors. However, I became somewhat disenchanted around chapter 13 because the format wasn't how I expected. In the first book, Randy broke down an entire novel into 10 simple steps. At the end of each chapter, you knew exactly what to do. It's not like that with this book. I wished that Randy offered more concise steps about scene construction. Overall, it's worth the $2.99.There's two other books I wish to include about scenes. One is "How To Write That Scene: Professional Techniques For Fiction Authors," by Rayne Hall and "Make a Scene: Writing a Powerful Story One Scene at a Time" by Jordan Rosenfeld. Those books coupled with this will give you much confidence with creating all types of scenes.

Randy Ingermanson breaks the scene-writing process down in a clear and concise manner and has some fun doing it. He continues the theme from his "How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method", honing in on individual scenes. He then shows how each "mini story" contributes to the big picture. Using some well-known examples, he points out how the process plays out to create stories that satisfy readers, and keep them turning pages. I loved the first book and I think I liked this one even more. A must-read, especially for new writers.

Randy's book is a winner in helping other writers learn the craft. This book will show you the key difference between a so-so writer and a great writer. What is it? Building scenes with Randy's interpretation of the proactive scene and the reactive scene. And placing your protagonist in a situation that becomes a crucible for her. If you're writing sci-fi, fantasy, romance or mysteries this book will help you become the best writer you can be. I used Randy's hints and tips (from his website material which he enhanced in this book) to write my first book and his ideas turned me from a struggling writer to a professional writer.

I liked the book a lot and found many useful tools. The most useful one is the idea about how each scene needs to be a story in and of itself. I think Mr. Ingermanson has deeply integrated the wisdom of Dwight Swain (from the book "Techniques of the Selling Writer") and made it into his own teaching. Bravo! My only criticism of this book is that it is really, in the end, more about "How to Tell if You Have Written a Dynamite Scene" than "How to Write One." Bu it is so important for an author to be able to triage his/her scenes - and at the end of the book, the Ingermanson focuses exactly on that. If the book was titled and structured entirely around triage, I would have given it 5 stars. As it is, it contains straightforward and wonderful advice, and I can still wholeheartedly recommend it. And really, when you think about it, telling someone how to triage a scene is pretty damn close to helping them write it in the first place.

I picked this one up after enjoying his previous book about writing a novel with the snowflake method. This book is concise but packed full of good info, in which the author hones in on how to write good scenes. There isn't going to be much info on how the scenes work together as a narrative outside "proactive" and "reactive" scenes, but you can find that in his other book. Here, he distills down what you need to make captivating scenes that keep readers reading.I liked how he remained consistent with examples from novels throughout the book. Every concept you learn he reinforces with examples from three popular books, which was helpful in seeing the technique in action. This is the kind of book I'd like to see more of: small chunks of craft that are focused on so you aren't wading through a tom that includes everything about writing. I'm looking forward to what is next.

omg. OMG OMG OMGOMGTHIS IS THE BEST Book ever. I've read over a hundred writing books and many articles on story telling and writing scenes. This here is the secret sauce.I have to say, this is THE book. I was hooked from the beginning and my god. MY FREAKING GODTHIS is the ULTIMATE Key.I'm a picky reader. Very picky. And this is top notch. If I could give this book 100 stars I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I had previously read How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method and enjoyed it which is why I purchased this book--this book was even more helpful. I hope that Randy writes a book for all aspects of writing. They're fun to read and make the point.I'd already written several scenes for my historical novel and I'm glad that I was procrastinating so that I didn't have to go back and change too much. By following Randy's methods my scenes are now much more effective (and easier to write), particularly the reactive scenes. His examples gave me a clear insight into the various techniques being described. Thanks again!

A must reading for writing scenes that traps the readers. I learnt the basics of a scene from his previous two books:Writing Fiction for Dummies and the Snowflake method for writing a novel. This one explains writing an attention gripping scene in details.
