Review
"More than a cookbook, Maggie Battista's A New Way to Food is a love story about her learning to accept herself and, along the way, inspiring us to evaluate our own relationships with ourselves and our bodies. If I could change one thing about it, it would be the ability to go back in time and give my younger self a copy."—Julia Turshen, author of Now & Again, Feed the Resistance, and Small Victories"Maggie tells her story in such an honest and approachable way, and the plant-based plan she offers is both do-able and delicious! This is the way I like to eat and she has so many great recipe ideas that I will be using."—Erin Gleeson, author of The Forest Feast"Maggie Battista’s A New Way to Food is more than a diverse collection of nutritious and beautiful recipes. It is an essential statement about empowerment through healthy self-care. With this cookbook/self-help hybrid, Maggie shows us more than A New Way to Food; she shows us the way to a better self."—Andie Mitchell, author of the New York Times bestselling memoir It Was Me All Along and Eating in the Middle"A New Way to Food is filled with in-depth knowledge about realizing your beautiful authentic potential, reckoning with your past and loving yourself all while eating Maggie's incredibly delicious recipes along the way. This cookbook is filled with fresh, clean and delicious options for any season from Blueberry Plum Crisp Pie to Sweet Potato Gnocchi. Every woman who has struggled with their health should dive into these pages and prepare to be inspired by Maggie's journey and personal experience. I cannot recommend this cookbook enough. It will truly shift your perspective about what being healthy and beautiful really means inside and out."—Amie Valpone, best-selling author of Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body“We are taken by how Maggie, through health and weight struggles, has proved we are all capable of change. Her beautiful new book is a full take on how to create a positive relationship with food and we are certain it will inspire many on their own journeys.”—David Frenkiel and Luise Vindahl, authors of Green Kitchen Stories“Detailing a revitalizing lifestyle change that advocates eating mindfully, [A New Way to Food] imparts gentle self-care tips that focus on letting go of setbacks and taking a wholesome approach to food. There’s less motivational cheerleading than genuine, been-there-done-that compassion. Leaving room for differences, Battista says that there’s no single way a journey should unfold.” —Foreword Reviews "I can’t recommend this book enough. The words are honest and encouraging and the recipes are playful and approachable and exciting!"—Joy the Baker"The book is in tune with current thinking that everyone is different and previous notions of how people should look — how traditional models and celebrities look — aren’t practical or realistic for most people. Happiness comes when you combine healthy eating with a healthy lifestyle and a healthy attitude about the body you’ve been given."—Boston Globe

The negative aspects of this review are completely based on the written content within the book. The book itself is beautiful and was delivered on time and in perfect condition.I think I should point out that this book was recommended to me by a fat, body-pos yogi that I follow on IG, so maybe my expectations were too high. Upon reading this cookbook, I was dismayed to find what seemed like a lot of fatphobic language. The author claims to be on this path of self-love and wellness, but then writes "Now I see myself skinny. That doesn't mean I'm skinny by popular definition...That means I see myself skinny in the way that I see potential in me to be healthy." A) That's not how it works; B) Battista has just signed on to the skinny = good, fat = bad false dichotomy.Battista keeps saying this is not a diet plan. However, instead she has renamed her diet as "active wellness mode" and when she's not dieting it's called "everyday wellness mode". This is a classic diet, y'all.I could go on, but hopefully this is enough evidence that this book is not what it was recommended to me as: a way to reimagine our relationship with food and wellness in a fat-positive (since the author is fat), love-your-body-the-way-it-is manner.I added a few stars because the recipes are tasty and there are a lot of good homemade dairy-alternatives.
This is such a wonderful book for anyone who’s looking to make meaningful changes in their life. Through various steps, tips and personal stories, Maggie explains how just making a few changes, taking it one step at a time and focusing on what makes you truly happy can make a wonderful difference. This is NOT about losing weight. This is not a diet book. This is not a fad. This is a book about making tweaks to your lifestyle in order to be healthier, still love and enjoy food, and feeling better about it.I’ve been eating my stress, my fatigue, my happiness, and basically any emotion for my entire life. The advice, recipes and stories in this book helped me understand how to change that... without changing it too much. The book also offers meal plans for easy planning (again, not to diet but to simplify good decision making throughout the week) and next to each recipe, there is a note on whether the recipe should be seen as a treat, a daily ritual, or something in between. This is just a wonderfully written book, a book I spent a whole weekend reading anytime I had a moment, recognizing myself in the personal stories, bookmarking recipes and craving a big tray of homemade, vegan baked ziti (and the rice and bean!!)
Maggie Battista, your cookbook has me speechless. It’s incredible!! I can’t get enough of it, as in don’t want to put it down. I love the inspiration that brought your book to light and the stories, encouragement and support it gives flipping from one recipe/story to the next. I can’t wait to make my first recipe, the Cacoa-Coffee Granola (since I have most of the ingredients in what I thought were boring cabinets) and what I’ll make from there, and next after that, until I make them all. Thank you for sharing your talent and glow with the world. And a very VERY big CONGRATS to you!! 🥳🥰🤗
A terrific back story adds a personal touch to these really terrific recipes. Tried a few already and I'm impressed with their simplicity of prep and complexity of taste. Really, really great stuff!
Love the recipes - they're accessible and well-written. Love the message throughout. Many great reasons to add this one to your shelf.
I love this book! It’s a great balance of delicious and healthy recipes with a little something for everyone! I can personally attest to Maggie’s blueberry, buckwheat pancakes! AAAAAMAZING!
I hate writing this review, because I love Maggie, but this book left me upset. It starts out body positive, but eventually turns to body shaming and diet promoting, without really realizing it. I get the sense that even Maggie isn't so sure about her "new way" of eating or how she feels about body positivity or food. Definitely not enough that she should have written a cookbook about it. The book advocates for things like weighing yourself every day, seeing some foods as "good" and others as "bad," and just generally reads as if overeating and fatness is a monster that can creep up on her and return at any time. In the first few pages, I felt like I was going to learn to love myself and my relationship with food more. Instead, the ensuing chapters seemed to hit with more and more rules and diet culture. This book is just as much a diet manifesto as any other, peppered with demonizations of meat, dairy, alcohol, and other entire food groups, but veiled as a "this is what works for me." I walked away feeling like Maggie was not at all ready or far enough in her journey to write an eating manifesto. If you have very emotional issues with food, this book isn't for you.
I loved this book, with its inspiring and genuine message and delicious recipes. Maggie seems like such a delightful person, one you wish you could invite over for (something healthy!) and great conversation. The negative reviews here puzzle me. I appreciate Maggie's positive view of herself, while she also acknowledges that obesity is NOT healthy, despite recent politically correct overtures to make it seem so. Her focus on wellness is exactly right, in my opinion -- she can love and accept her beautiful self, while also working toward a healthier lifestyle.
