Alan and Naomi is an American Book Award Finalist for Children's Literature and an honor book for the Jane Addams Children's Book Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and has received the National Book Awards in Germany and Austria, and the Dutch Silver Pencil Prize. Adore this story with all my heart!The movie was one of my favorite of all times for the last decade and a half and I JUST now realized it originated with a book. I bought the book used and read it in a single day, enjoying it all over again.While not for the young reader, the sadness doesn't detract from the power of the beautiful relationship between Alan and Naomi. The story has influenced much of my own published fiction. Would recommend it for sure!

This is a very moving story. My son had to read it for school and he was not sure that he would like it. I read it first, 46 yo Mom, and he saw me crying in the first chapter, so he was even more skeptical. But after he read it we talked about the decisions and the changes in the main character. It is a good read for anyone (need to be over 10/12 depending on maturity).

It was just okay. I had to read it for my Narrating Childhood class. It was short and easy to read.

Stories should change a person. At a minimum, they should make the reader feel something. Otherwise, both the author and the reader have wasted their time. This little book will definitely leave a mark.I'm not sure about the word count, but it's close to the threshold of novel and novelette. Either way, it's about mixed neighborhoods and PTSD, masculinity, friendship, tenderness, adolescence, and the long, ugly fingers of war. Most remarkable is Levoy's portrayal of conflicted emotions, and how we don't show what we feel or act in ways that make sense. Alan's youthful insecurity is palpable and immediately identifiable, an experience shared across generations.Others have recommended hiding this from younger readers, as the subject matter is emotionally intense and difficult to handle. Discretion is always encouraged, but I respectfully propose that twelve, the age of the protagonist, is an appropriate age for most.

At our school we are required to tell about one extra credit book every six weeks. This was on my extra credit list, so I just ordered it from another library, not really expecting that much. But boy, was I wrong! I was witness to young Alan trying to help Naomi, a terrified young girl who locks herself deep inside after her father is beaten to death in front of her for making maps that led Jews to freedom. I rejoiced with him as he slowly made progress until Naomi seemed to totally braek free of her shell and enter the big world. A little cautious, perhaps, but she was really there. It was totally easy to fall in love with Naomi. Her extremely intelligent, sweet mind was so refreshing. She is lively, and so much fun! "Crazy Cat" became Alan's best friend, caught up with the school year's class in only two weeks, and Alan and she shared everything. Alan learns why when she first came and wasn't quite in her right mind she spent all her time shredding paper. When her father had been killed, she and him had been shredding his secret maps and flushing them down in the toilet so that the Gestapo would have no reason to harm him. They failed to make it, and Naomi blamed herself. Then one day a cruel boy from school called Alan a "dirty Jew" and they got into a fight. What happened as a consequence to Naomi's mind was so sad it almost made me cry. Read it! This book makes you really see the fear and loss that Hitler and the Nazis brought. It is really a touching story.

Something freaking amazing! This book is an awesome companion to anyone who is a huge Stranger Things fan! The retro look that this book has is totally tubular and I love that they even put a Melvald’s price tag on it! This is honestly the best companion to a movie/tv show I’ve ever owned. The only thing I wish is that they waited to release this until they were done with the series, because now I’ll have to buy another companion for the rest of the show!

This book is for nerds. No seriously that's what the duffer brothers said in the foreword and boy are they right! You will get an overload of all geek artifacts such as Dungeons and Dragons, video games, Stephen King novels, horror movies, the works. What I liked about this book is that the brothers are unabashedly nerds and are sharing their love of geekdom with their audience. It’s almost as if you are hanging out with them and you are talking about various subjects with such passion that has influenced their creativity. One of my favorite authors as of late is Larry Flores (Creepy Vibes, The Fire Diaries) who has a lot in common with the Duffer brothers as far as their love of geek culture. You can tell that they were influenced by the same things growing up in the 80s. However, Larry’s wheelhouse is dark humor. Getting back to the book, its designed with YOU in mind.The main characters all have Dungeons and Dragons type player cards that decorate their bio complete with strengths and weaknesses which is a nice touch. Also I loved how the book addressed all of the Easter eggs in the show. For example, The Duffers favorite movie is Jaws so that heavily influenced the reason why you didn't see the demagorgon until the last episode of season 1.The book gives you the most in-depth details you could ever want if you are a fan of this show. No stone is left unturned. So if you love Stranger Things than this is a no-brainer but the best part is that it really does feel like the Duffer brothers are right there with you and well...that just pays for itself

This book is blunt, a shock, and exactly what I needed to wake up and see what men are really like and what they think about us.Luckily I read this book previous to meeting a man at a concert. I normally wouldn't ask questions because I was raised that it isn't appropriate. But I asked a lot of questions, and he answered them. Found out on the 2nd date that he had a cocaine addiction, almost lost his job, owns nothing after working for a good company for 28 years, and now addicted to other things that drain his wallet, and has an STD.He couldn't wait until the 3rd date because then we could go all the way! Who made up that rule? But it's in the book.The book really helped me out. And I reread it alot and wrote key things down so I would remember.The book made me realize that I'm pretty awesome, doing great, and I don't want a guy at all!They just want to use us!

This book truly changed my love life in a way that no other book, seminar or workshop has. I was single for over a decade. About 3 months after reading this book, multiple guys were wanting to get serious with me and about 10 months after, I met a wonderful guy, and we're in a healthy, loving long-term relationship. Part of why I was single for so long was me and my issues (such as trust, abandonment, fear of divorce, daddy issues, etc). Part of why I was single was also due to living in major cities like DC & NYC, where the culture places career first, relationships 2nd or 3rd, and the pool of men were happy to stay single and unattached for as long as possible. I spent years working on myself trying to attract an amazing relationship - I had a lot of work to do, and I buckled down and did it. I think of this book as the final tipping point for me to develop into a person who can attract amazing relationships. This book is a bit of tough love, but it's so worth it because it pushes you to be honest with yourself about your behavior. It compares and contrasts two types of women - placeholders and game changers, and clearly shows what the behaviors are of these two types are. The book lays it out as simple as "Do This" or "Don't do This." If you read this book, and truly study it and make changes in your mindset and behavior, you will see results. I littlerally would read over certain chapter before going on dates and it was a huge help. As someone who has read almost every book under the sun about relationships & dating in addition to taking courses and working with private dating coaches, this book truly lays out the best content to make a real change and transformation in finding the love that you deserve.

I read this book for the first time about two and a half years ago, started to practice it, got mixed results, read it again, internalised some more, got a little better results and repeated until I met a man who has managed to rock my world and make all my girlfriends jealous for a bit more than a year now. He did test me in a variety of ways and I could have never ever ever ever gone through the first five or so dates being so self-confident, unbothered and enjoying myself in the process had I never had GL's book.GL taught me everything that my parents never did and helped me find the peace of mind and confidence that I never thought I had. Through stumbling and a couple of failed attempts, little victories and a massive amount of self discovery I learnt to accept the amazing person that I was and commit to becoming the person I was always meant to be.As for the men.. My younger self could have never imagined that some men absolutely love to spoil their women, granted, if you let them! There are no guarantees of anything in life but this experience has given me the confidence that I can attract and retain a man of that caliber - if not even better.Update a month later: we're engaged now.

This book opened my eyes to how men really, truly jockey for position in relationships and how to turn that heartache around. If you find yourself getting continuously wined and dined and pumped and dumped, this book will hold up a mirror to your life and set you straight. Be prepared for 100% brutal honesty! And it isn’t about playing silly games or following outdated “rules.” The book goes through a detailed blueprint of how to conduct yourself on a date, in a relationship, etc., but when it comes down to it, it’s all about self-respect, self-confidence, and never putting your true needs under the whims and desires of a guy who is just interested in making you a placeholder. A must-have for today’s woman!

Wow! You name it, I've read it! In my 53 years, I have yet to write a review review for a book. I read probably five-six books a month. Many on leadership as that that's my professional passion and others on relationship as since my divorce I seem to have attracted what my mom refers to as bottom feeders. My divorce rocked my world and I can't help but think had a serious impact on my self esteem, etc. I loved Lambert's direct, in your face approach to helping those of us who have been the "typical" women realize how short we sell ourselves in relationships. Of all (at least 30 relationship books that I have read), this book changed my life. Have referred it to every "typical" girlfriend I know!!!
