I bought this book to give as a gift, but I liked it so much I kept it for myself. The photos in the book are striking: they are bright, colorful, and ultra-crisp. The photos almost seem to jump of the page and beg you to get folding.The illustrations that accompany the setup-by-step instructions are also well done. The drawings are very detailed, and the "paper" in the drawings show patterns and shading that make it easy to understand the direction of the folds and creases. The written folding instructions accompanying the illustrations are well written and very easy to follow. I’m a total beginner at origami, and I had no trouble creating recognizable projects. I used larger pieces of photo-copy paper to practice on so my finished projects are too big to use as jewelry, but they look great just as decorations at my desk. When I feel confident enough with my skills, I will use so of my pretty Yuzen Chiyogami paper.So this is a great book for someone new to origami. And the projects are so appealing they can be used in many different ways. This book is not just for jewelry makers.

This book is one of the best purchases I've ever made! I've only learned how to do the crane and heart earrings so far, but even just knowing those two I can make some amazing earrings that everyone loves! (I suggest buying 3 inch origami paper and cutting it in 4 for earrings.) Also, I found that using nail polish hardens and protects the earrings well, plus it adds that extra sparkle to them =] (It can sometimes bleed through the paper though so try to only put it on the colorful side of the paper.)

I've been looking for something like this for a long time. I enjoy origami, but have run out of uses for it. I've done the cards, the gift wrap boxes, quilt squares etc. but I kept thinking that it would do well for jewelry. I might have given it a try myself by now, except that I'm inordinately lazy and have had little time until recently to devote to the project.Ayako Brodek's book Origami Jewelry came out this year (copyright 2007) and just in time for Christmas gifts, so I've started studying the book for materials list and techniques.Those who have done origami before will recognize the folds and joining techniques; they're the standard ones found in most books on the topic. Those who have done jewelry making will recognize the findings and their individual uses from their craft as well.For me, the important information in this case was on finishing techniques that make the paper stable enough for wear, and on the problems one might encounter when taking ideas from one craft into another. In the latter case the fact that some origami papers do not hold up well with surfacing materials.Definitely something nice to do for holiday giving. In fact, an excellant book to give at the holiday.

Excellent for kids/adults that are familiar with origami cranes, samurai hats, etc using small (tiny) sheets of origami paper. Of course you can always practice with larger paper and move to small when you're proficient. My 9 year old makes one pair of earrings a day and enjoys producing something that her family members wear. Haven't had much luck with the modge podge for sealing the paper but they've held up ok without sealing them

I'm in no way and origami expert. I can do modular origami and some basic/medium figurative designs. The designs in this book are easy to fold and the directions are very clear for those who are taking a first step in origami or jewerly making, which is very positive. It has a useful prologue to teach us different paper characteristics, toold needed and some basic techniques.However, for somebody who is a little more experienced, it might be a bit dissapointing to realize that the "more than 40 designs" are not 40 different origami designs, but 40 things you can do with fewer origame shapes just by mixing and matching.

I bought this gift for my 12 year old daughter hoping that she would make me some jewelry but I couldn't put it down once I started looking at it. Not really geared towards a 12 year old but it's beautifully photographed and the projects are really great! We're fairly experienced so the techniques were not new to us but they are MUCH smaller in scale than usual. The only down side is finding the paper they recommend. It's rare and pricy. If you have an avid folder, it's a great way to make something useful rather than having thousands of cranes, elephant, boxes all over the house!

I got this thinking it would be good projects for making gifts. Good diagrams.

Beautifully illustrated with clear directions. Jewelry design sufficient to learning a large enough repetoire, especially for a beginner.

I'm a grandmother and watching the movie didn't appeal to me because I don’t like violence until two male friends and my son insisted I had to see it. I was completely drawn in, especially when the real relationship between the protagonist and Tyler was revealed. To me, it was more of a psychological story. The musings about consumerism, the downward spiral of the main character, the creation of something that spins out of control, and the followers willing to do anything to be part of something were fascinating. His complicated relationship with the only female character who confounds, irritates and draws him is woven into a brilliant story. So I had to read the book. It’s a little different and the ending is different. But I was as drawn in to the book as the film. I also enjoyed the Afterword, which gave some background to the creation and aftermath of this book. Great writing and a compelling plot.

It was nearly impossible for a movie or television show to upstage the book. With Chuck Paluhniak’s “Fight Club,” it was definitely a close battle.As usual, though, the original product won. Nothing against the movie, which is one of my favorites, but there is no way to inject the rawness of Mr. Paluhniuk’s prose into the entire film.The writing contains the power of this book, a first-person tale of one man’s battle with the futility of a life that is good, just not good enough. The author brings us into the story just as the main character begins his fall into the rabbit hole, dragging the reader along. It is interesting that the main character never uses his name, though as a plot device this reinforces the characterization.For those wondering if the book can pull off an ending that can compete with the movie, I can attest the final chapter is very satisfying and is one more reason to pick up the print version. Five well-deserved stars.

It is true, the book is always better than the movie. Watching this movie in 1999 in New York City Theaters and I remember how much influence on my way of thinking, to challenge the hamster wheel, just as I was starting college.Of course the book is way cooler after you watched the movie, as you have Brad Pitt in your head and the other amazing characters from the movie - honestly I am not sure how much I would have enjoyed the book if I didn’t already have the amazing visual experience from watching the video.Yet by reading the book, you get so much more depth and feeling. Those quick 5 second clips in the movie now are written out in pages and you get the more granular feel of what is happening in Tyler and the character’s head (whose name we never know!).The ending is different in the movie and the book - and I saw that in the review when deciding to invest in reading the book or not - and that alone is worth going through it.What was surprising was how close the book and the movie are! Some of the exact lines are right from the book, and for the most part it is fairly straight along the the same storyline.As Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time, I of course will enjoy the book and it gives a new angle and dimension - I should probably watch the movie (yes again) to more fully compare the book and movie.

Let's talk about Fight Club. I was borderline unhealthily obsessed with the movie version of Fight Club when I first saw it at 16. In many ways, the book is better. Fight Club deals with self-loathing, repressed impulses, and the hypocritical and meaning-starved existence many of us in the developed world feel we live in a manner which never fails to be fun, engaging, and artistic. In addition to the message, as I've gotten older and read more novels I've come to appreciate the style in which Fight Club is written more and more.PS if this book ends up resonating with your latent aggressive impulses, try boxing, kickboxing or Jiu Jitsu. (But please don't blow stuff up)

This book explores how the Danish authorities governed the colonized population in Greenland in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Two competing narratives of colonialism dominate in Greenland as well as Denmark. One narrative portrays the Danish colonial project as ruthless and brutal extraction of a vulnerable indigenousness people; the other narrative emphasizes almost exclusively the benevolent aspects of Danish rule in Greenland. Rather than siding with one of these narratives, this book investigates actual practices of colonial governance in Greenland with an outlook to the extensive international scholarship on colonialism and post-colonialism. The chapters address the intimate connections between the establishment of an ethnographic discourse and the colonial techniques of governance in Greenland. I bought this book because I have family in upper Michigan, that came from Finland to settle down there. I was hoping to find names I knew, which I didn't, but it is very possible some family is in those pictures! I highly recommend this book as it tells history in pictures, and there are alot of pictures. There is also written history information that adds to the interest of this great book. Even tho it is a smaller size book in that its not alot of pages, there is so much there.

I bought this book for my mother in-law and my dad, both of Finnish descent, both born and raised in the U.P. Dad never left God's country and MIL moved back after trying life in a warmer climate for awhile. They both were beyond delighted with this book. My MIL found a photo of her grandfather that she had never seen before on one page and it was so much fun to see her reaction upon discovering it. The rich historical documentation enhanced by the old homestead, business and other photos are amazing. Finns of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a heartwarming and informative book

Fascinating! Wonderful photos. Even though my husband’s relatives are U.P. Finns, there is so much we never knew about the history of the communities up there. This book is going to make the rounds of our family once we’re done with it. I just wish my mother-in-law was still alive to enjoy it.
