This series of books, both the artists and composers series are a wonderful and fun introduction for children (and adults) to the arts and the artists behind the art treasures we cherish.

Venezia's love and respect for music shine through in another of the books in his World's Greatest Composers series. The story of Aaron Copland's life is told in an interesting and amusing fashion and shows children how Copland discovered his own style through his experiences over the years. While Venezia's artwork is comical as ever, the choice of artwork is also wonderful, showing how music as well as art changed as the times were changing. Children will appreciate how Copland looked to change his musical style when he realized that many people weren't understanding it. this wonderful book contains not the anatomical information of drawing, (though it very briefly and sparsely touches that, so briefly that it's not worth mentioning) but the force that gives a drawing life; gestures and intention. the reviews that complain of illustration quality obviously have missed the point of the book. this is not about finished drawings, this is about capturing a moment and learning to express emotions and movement through your characters. creating interest with flow and lines and simplicity and building from there is up to you. this can be applied to any style. i've only had this book for one day and i can not put it down. Mr. Stanchfeild explains the thinking process for bringing about believable and relatable poses, how to breathe life and a story into a simple sketch. his explanations are amazingly easy to understand and to apply. rudimentary knowledge of anatomy is required to practice these exercises but even then it will be molded to your needs. i can not say enough good things about this book and will purchase the second when i've finished this one.

Images suck badly in kindle verision, so disappointing trying to see the details that Stanchfield point out in the book only to get pixels and noise please fix this and I'll change my rating to 5 stars :( also is hard to read text written in scanned images this is a lousy work, if you are going to buy the printed version then, 5 stars this info is invaluable, but digital version I may prefer the free version that is out there. Not buying the second book because of this reason.

This is a great book, very poorly bound. Pages were coming out from the first reading. Don't buy this edition. Shame on Focal Press.

The material in the book is fantastic and was just what I was looking for. But the binding of the book is terrible. I purchased it as new and have opened it twice since I have purchased this book and literally 15-20 pages have fallen out. Not impressed.

 Drawn to Life is a collection of lectures from long-time Disney animator Walt Stanchfield. He has worked for Disney since the 1950s.There are two volumes, each with over 400 pages. The reason for two volumes is probably to make the books easier to handle. Both are on gesture and life drawing, even though the cover art might suggest otherwise, especially the one with the lion. You can start reading from any book and any lecture. The order isn't important.There are plenty of essays in the books. Each is a lesson relating to drawing and animation. It can be tangent drawings, creating believable characters, learning to observe, understanding gestures, etc. There are tips on almost anything relating to drawing. Loose and sketchy sketches serves as examples to the lessons.These books are more thinking than drawing technique books. For example, the lessons are not about how to draw perspective, the lessons are about how to use perspective. You can view sample pages for volume one and volume two on amazon.com to get an idea.The books represent a tremendous wealth of information and insight into drawing, animation and observation. After all, Walt Stanchfield has more than 50 years of experience in animation.This book is recommended to those who are into animation and drawing.(More pictures are available on my blog. Most drawing books I've found are structured and tell you how to draw this and how to draw that and just pretty much lays it out to you to get it to look like the picture in the book. Not very creative in my opinion. This one, however, is different. Good different. These are notes by Walt Stanchfield, who taught drawing classes to some of the great animators of today such as Glen Keane, Joe Ranft, Andreas Deja, and Eric Goldberg. In this volume he emphasizes the gesture drawing and capturing the essence of the action. This book is meant for animators who need to think in motion, but can be very helpful for any artist who wants to make their drawing more than "just a drawing". (He uses that phrase a lot). Most of this book is reading material with drawing illustrations to stress the point, but the reading is so fast and almost conversational in a way because he uses humor, drama, stories from his life, and stories from his drawing classes. I always end up smiling in each chapter and even sometimes laughing out loud at some of the things he says. I recommend having a pen or highlighter with you when reading each chapter because he says some pretty enlightening things that hit me like "why did I not think about that in a drawing before?" So whether you be an inspiring animator, such as my self, or just want to better your art, I highly recommend both volumes to really bring your art to life!

There is a section on prayer to connect with multiple divinities for special needs, and another section on whom to call for specific needs.A MIRACLE HAPPENED BECAUSE OF USING THIS BOOK. I had discovered a large lump on my dog and took him to the vet. The vet diagnosed him with a tumor that needed to be removed ASAP. The surgery was going to cost over $800 and I didn't have nearly enough. I did an invocation calling two of the deities in book, one who helps with pets, and one who helps with money. I ask that I receive some help with the money to pay for my dog’s surgery. Within a few hours, I received a phone call from a nonprofit organization that helps with situations like mine. They paid $500 towards my dog’s surgery.This book is very powerful and the invocations work! You can use the suggested invocations or design one that is tailored toward your personal needs. Here is another useful tool for those pursuing a spiritual path. Ms.Virtue does a great job of explaining the difference between working with benevolent spirits and idolatry. She is thorough in her research, descriptions and explanations. I found the book particularly useful in identifying energy signatures. I had a client who was visited by a deity in a dream and was given an ancient pre-Christ name that she had no prior knowledge of. Upon further research, it was unclear to her whether the deity was benevolent; due to a number of 'mixed reviews'. Her Christian upbringing made her fearful. Helping her research the matter further, I purchased this book. Turns out the feminine deity was one that Ms. Virtue was familiar with and gave a loving explanation of how to work with. Doreen' s accurate descriptions and first hand experiences shared in this work, put my client's mind at ease. What an amazing gift. There are many sources of information on working with various unseen forces, but Doreen is always sure to identify the forces that serve the Light. It is a "Who's Who of the Spirit World" first hand account. I've got the kindle version but will also purchase the hard copy for my library references. There are other books that will give you an A-Z guide to identifying spirits, but Doreen is definitely my 'go-to' for recognizing and working with BENEVOLENT spiritual forces. Thank you, Ms. Virtue for always being there and having the courage to share your experiences with the world.

Sandars prose version, and Andrew George's verse translation (this one).I felt like I understood Geroge's version much better than the prose version. The intro of the text is divided in 3 parts. I found the last two parts ("The setting of the epic," and "The epic in its context: myth, religion and wisdom") particularly gripping. I did not like the first part, "Gilgamesh and Ancient Mesopotamian Literature," because it was largely a history of how the tablets were discovered. Onto the epic: although having missing text was disappointing at times, I learned to accept it as something that can't be helped and instead enjoyed what was available. The way the text is written out with brackets, ellipsis, and so forth lets you see what is available in the Gilgamesh tablets. I liked this because I was able to compare it alongside the prose version and see what was likely added on by N. K. Sandars. The parts that did coincide with both of the texts was highly moving even though sometimes it was simplistic. But I guess that is what makes Gilgamesh a classic: its ability to take universal themes and deal with them in an understandable manner. Overall, this thrilled me.

By reviewing every available version of the epic, combining them so as to do away with any significant gaps in the story,, and transforming the rather stilted verse into smoothly flowing prose, the epic becomes far more readable. I would recommend this edition to any teachers and professors introducing their students to Gilgamesh, or to the curious lay reader interested in literature or history

I didn't want to give the book one star because my comment is only about the cover which actually gets a huge goose egg. There's no place to ask a question but I can't help but wondering who at Penguin decided that a detail from a PERSIAN ACHAEMENID Winged Bull Relief would be appropriate for a book translating The Epic of Gilgamesh. I can only assume that Andrew George didn't have any say in the choice. Dear Penguin: The Persians had nothing to do with the Epic of Gilgamesh; it is a Mesopotamian myth and the Persians were the enemy who conquered Mesopotamia in 539 BCE so they would hardly be well thought of by its writers. You need to change the cover in the next edition. Professor George can certainly suggest possible images that wouldn't be so ludicrous.
