I have been learning new things each time. Andy has a great sense of humor too and interjects little nuggets of sarcasm! This book is great not only for new Windows 8 users but for anyone who may not understand all there is to learn on a computer. There are so many aspects of a computer that I never knew before. Can only do so much with the one I use at work and have never had a real computer to use at home. I am outlining all of the important points. It is going to be very helpful to refer back to when I am proficient at Windows 8 and need to look something up. So glad I bought this book!

April 20, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI decided to buy this book after I did a search on Windows 95 for Dummies to find out that this was the same author. I've always been ahead of all of the computer users because I carried around Windows 95 for Dummies religiously. If you think you're an expert with Windows, most likely you aren't. I found this out after people would type the entire web address for a website while I only held control and wrote in the name of the website without the www and without the com. This book is just as informative, and will teach you tricks that most don't know.I recently bought a laptop without a touch screen and felt like I was being cheated. Windows 8 was not confusing, but I was very frustrated with the hot corners method. I would have to move the pointer to one of the corners, and would usually end of just saying "I can't stand this operating system". I quickly learned that I don't have to use that stupid hot corners method. What a relief! That method works well for touchscreens, but not for me with my basic laptop. I quickly learned that the Windows flag key was the most important key on the keyboard. I've never used that key for any of the prior operating systems. NEVER ONCE!If you tap that button, magic appears, and you aren't lost anymore. Hold it down and tap the letter C and your charms appear. I then followed all the instructions to make a beautiful desktop that the author suggested. WOW! No more vanilla desktop, and my start screen has Wikipedia, free games I found at the Microsoft apps store and the Netflix tile is in the trash. I will continue to carry this book around, as I have learned a lot, and want my knowledge to grow.As far as the DVD, he author made a brief appearance on the DVD, but for the most part it was another man speaking, and I found him to be boring, although informative. I only paid about $0.50 more for the DVD so I can't complain too much. If you decide to go with just the book, you'll be fine.

I read the whole book and highlighted areas that were relavent and new to me. Found the book felt a bit disjointed. I think it was the insertion of touch screen information that contributed to confusion. While the book does cover many areas of interest and with its instuction I was able to get a feel for Windows 8 ( Another loser for Microsoft ). The illustrations are black & white and not very clear. Coverage is from basic windows operations ( things you learned years ago ) to touchscreen actions. Incidently I don't recommend trying to learn Windows 8 and how to use a touchpad at the same time ( very disconcerting ). Basicly this book took in to large an area; Basic windows, Windows 8 & Touchscreen. Recommend another choice.

I am totally new to Windows 8, so it is very good in helping me get started. The DVD, however, is a poorly made production. With normal volume for the lessons and very loud, irritating, jingle-like tunes between lessons at such a loud volume, I find it hard to even use the DVD! The jingles are so loud and lessons so short, that I find myself constantly fumbling with my remote, adjusting the volume and hitting the mute to stop the annoying music. Can't the author do any better than this when it comes to creating an educational DVD? If a better DVD comes out, this bundle is toast! Two stars for a very good book and an awful DVD.

This book is wonderful. It has been so helpful to go through every section of the book and follow along on the computer. I have been learning new things each time. Andy has a great sense of humor too and interjects little nuggets of sarcasm! This book is great not only for new Windows 8 users but for anyone who may not understand all there is to learn on a computer. There are so many aspects of a computer that I never knew before. Can only do so much with the one I use at work and have never had a real computer to use at home. I am outlining all of the important points. It is going to be very helpful to refer back to when I am proficient at Windows 8 and need to look something up. So glad I bought this book!

Do what I did and get this when you get Windows 8. It's so completely different from any Windows before that you'll need help. And what better place to look for help than the Dummies guides? This book has already saved me tons of frustration, and I haven't even had the computer a full 24 hours yet. Buy it.

I decided to buy this book after I did a search on Windows 95 for Dummies to find out that this was the same author. I've always been ahead of all of the computer users because I carried around Windows 95 for Dummies religiously. If you think you're an expert with Windows, most likely you aren't. I found this out after people would type the entire web address for a website while I only held control and wrote in the name of the website without the www and without the com. This book is just as informative, and will teach you tricks that most don't know.I recently bought a laptop without a touch screen and felt like I was being cheated. Windows 8 was not confusing, but I was very frustrated with the hot corners method. I would have to move the pointer to one of the corners, and would usually end of just saying "I can't stand this operating system". I quickly learned that I don't have to use that stupid hot corners method. What a relief! That method works well for touchscreens, but not for me with my basic laptop. I quickly learned that the Windows flag key was the most important key on the keyboard. I've never used that key for any of the prior operating systems. NEVER ONCE!If you tap that button, magic appears, and you aren't lost anymore. Hold it down and tap the letter C and your charms appear. No more vanilla desktop, and my start screen has Wikipedia, free games I found at the Microsoft apps store and the Netflix tile is in the trash. I will continue to carry this book around, as I have learned a lot, and want my knowledge to grow.As far as the DVD, he author made a brief appearance on the DVD, but for the most part it was another man speaking, and I found him to be boring, although informative. I only paid about $0.50 more for the DVD so I can't complain too much. If you decide to go with just the book, you'll be fine.

I must admit that I am a "Dummies" supporter. Best books to learn something from scratch. I read the whole book and highlighted areas that were relavent and new to me. Found the book felt a bit disjointed. I think it was the insertion of touch screen information that contributed to confusion. While the book does cover many areas of interest and with its instuction I was able to get a feel for Windows 8 ( Another loser for Microsoft ). The illustrations are black & white and not very clear. Coverage is from basic windows operations ( things you learned years ago ) to touchscreen actions. Incidently I don't recommend trying to learn Windows 8 and how to use a touchpad at the same time ( very disconcerting ). Basicly this book took in to large an area; Basic windows, Windows 8 & Touchscreen. Recommend another choice.

Like the rest of the series, the book is informative and great when used as a reference. I am totally new to Windows 8, so it is very good in helping me get started. The DVD, however, is a poorly made production. With normal volume for the lessons and very loud, irritating, jingle-like tunes between lessons at such a loud volume, I find it hard to even use the DVD! The jingles are so loud and lessons so short, that I find myself constantly fumbling with my remote, adjusting the volume and hitting the mute to stop the annoying music. Can't the author do any better than this when it comes to creating an educational DVD? If a better DVD comes out, this bundle is toast! Two stars for a very good book and an awful DVD.

This book and DVD have been invaluable as I navigate through Windows 8 Pro.. As has been written, Windows 8 is a different animal and takes some getting used to. However, I have found it interesting to find some of the hidden features. Windows 8 was not as hard to navigate as I thought it would be, thanks to the book and DVD.

Haven't finished using the book yet, but what I have used has been good and clearly described. When I got the computer with Windows 8, I just felt overwhelmed and ordered the book. While waiting for it I did figure out some of the system, but this book helped answer the many questions I had so far. It will be a great reference book.

1162 pages of well researched text is what Robert Caro uses to tell the story of planner and political power Robert Moses. Over decades of service, Moses reshaped New York (both the city and the state) and other public structures. He began as a reformer; over time, he arrogated more and more power to himself--and still remained rather out of sight as a figure. He used his power sometimes unconcerned about the implications for citizens. The Cross-Bronx Expressway, for instance, displaced many people. How could he remain for so long a period of time as "below the radar"? He was not an elected official; he served on public authorities, which often have full governmental powers.His list of public works is extraordinary. The Major Deegan Expressway, the Van Wyck Expressway, the Long Island Expressway, and many others. Bridges? The Triborough, the Throgs Neck, the Henry Hudson, the Bronx-Whitestone, among others. He created parks such as Jones Beach, Fire Island, and Bethpage. He built buildings--some for the poor, some for the wealthy. He created stadiums (such as Shea). He had dams along the St. Lawrence River created; there is a large power plant along the Niagara River. And on the listing goes.A must read for those interested in Moses and in the power of public authorities. . . .

This is one of those books that sticks with you. I sing its praises all the time. I just want to offer a practical suggestion for reading it because there is no kindle version (WHY???) and it is a backbreaking brick to lug around.This was a tip from New York Magazine on "How to read 'The Power Broker'": Buy a cheap paperback version, tear it into thirds, read one third at a time. When you finish you will love this book so much that you will probably want to buy a hardcover version to have on your shelf.

I was curious about Robert Moses because a biography of Jane Jacobs was recently published. She was instrumental in stopping the Lower Manhattan Freeway that Robert Moses wanted. This was a monumental accomplishment as Moses controlled all municipal building in NYC for years and had a stranglehold on power even over numerous mayors. It took Governor Nelson Rockefeller to unseat him.What I found fascinating was Mosesâ€™ expert manipulation of the system of government in NY which gave him a stranglehold on power for years. His accomplishments cannot be denied. It is clear no one else had the capacity to build as many freeways, bridges and public works as he did in 44 years.Ok, now to the book. Clearly Caro deserved a Pulitzer for this. The research and detail is masterful. Others may disagree but I found the book riveting and felt it only bogged down once in over 1000 pages. I would have liked more information about Mosesâ€™s family but it may have been trimmed since the book was whittled down considerably before publishing.I now understand how our politicians can become so wealthy while in office. Itâ€™s all about the deals. A great look into power within the halls of government.

Several years ago, in a Barnes & Noble, I randomly picked up the first volume of Caro's books on Lyndon Johnson. It turned out to be one of those book that you have to buy because you can't stop reading it. I worked ("worked" is not really the right word - it's no work to read these books) through the first three books, then, while waiting for the fourth, looked around for other books by Caro, which is how I found The Power Broker. But the printed volume is a brick - one of those concrete ones they use to build walls with. And astonishingly, (publisher please note) THERE IS NO KINDLE VERSION (publisher please note). So for purposes of reading, the book is an anchor to your reading chair - you can't haul it around without a knapsack, so you can't read it mobilely.Happily, the book is available in audiobook form, and that's how I'm reading it. Despite some of the flaws identified in the 3 Star ratings below (which contain helpful reviews - worth reading despite the ratings) in my opinion this is a five star book. A five star book, to me, is one that I hesitate to put down and can't wait to take up again.The audio version takes up nearly 60 hours. The narrator does a terrific job. But most people's normal reading speed is much greater than his narration speed, and in my view, a book this size should be read, not heard. If only as a public service, the publisher should Kindle this book.

I bought this book a few years ago, I think on Amazon. It's around 1,200 pages and took forever to read at the rate of an hour a night. Was it worth it? Oh yeah. This is incredibly detailed, informative and is compelling reading. Mr. Caro did a magnificent job. I have a home library and I've read a lot of biographies. This is at the apex. It stands alone, above all others. I was incredibly impressed by the time I got to the end. And to this day, I still am.

Overall, a great book. At nearly 1200 pages, it weighs about 3-1/2 pounds, and is a bear to lug around on an airplane on vacation. Take my word for it, I lugged this thing all around the world, through Europe and the USA, what a mistake that was. Then I wound up leaving it a flight from DC to Portland last June, had to purchase another. arrrghghaghWith all due respect to Mr. Caro, even after 1167 pages, there is zero mention of Jane Jacobs and only passing reference to the fight over the lower Manhattan expressway. Meanwhile, this topic is discussed at length in part 7 of the Ric Burns' PBS television series documentary on New York, which even features Caro frequently as a commentator.I have also read all four volumes of Caro's LBJ biography. I enjoyed those more than this book. His writing style improved with the LBJ books. Power Broker gets a bit tedious, whereas the LBJ books were enthralling.

My nephew and niece (3 and 5 yo) fight over this book at bedtime, and that is a good thing :). It is a good "learning to read" book and I'm glad I purchased it. The subject interests toddlers and is relevant to their learning needs. Thank you Ms. Pendergrass....

My four year old grandson is really into the PJ Masks series at this time. I like to pick up easy reader books for him in the subjects that are of interest to him, so getting this book was pretty much a given. This is what I did with my children and it created an early love of reading which has stayed with them to this day.The book is a fun and easy read. I read it to him before he takes a nap and he sits and â€œreadsâ€ it to himself throughout the day when he is visiting with me. He is actually beginning to read and is able to pick out words and also to sound them out with phonics. He loves this book and I enjoy reading it to him.It is an inexpensive paperback book that will probably not stand the test of time. It is not near the quality of a Little Golden book but it is in the subject he enjoys. I am hoping it will still be usable when my almost two year old granddaughter is reading to enjoy it in the next year or so.

This is a very thin, poorly written, and poorly illustrated book. There are central events that happen in the story that happen without any pictures, so my child doesn't really understand what is going on. Like the book "Gekko Saves Christmas", this book appears to have been made with minimal effort to cash in on the brand. Avoid this one and look for a higher quality book.

Wish it was a hard cover but my son loves pj mask and book so he will love them for Christmas.

Bought as a Christmas gifts for my grandkids. They actually like books and have a nice library. This one was bought because I enjoyed watching the PJ Masks show with them during a recent visit. They really enjoy bedtime stories because they haven't learned to read yet themselves.

Great for my older kid in Kindergarten. Because we make reading interesting, he has improved tremendously and is ahead of his curve now. It also helps with his brother and how to be a team player.

The book itself is great. However, without the product code to download course material, its practically useless. I purchased it new, but, there was no wrapping and no code. It provides a website where I can access free course materials, but, even that isn't true. Waste of money.

The book was fine it was the book i needed but i don't understand why the book was due 2 days after my class ended and i had to get an extension

This is a great book for Georgia paddlers. I really like day trips so it being limited to day trips is really what I was looking for. I knock it one star however based on the float time given for a stretch I paddle often. Never in my best days shape could I float this trip in the estimated time just to many deadfalls and shallow water spots to pull over, maybe at flood stage? Anyway, it puts concern in my mind as to whether I can trust the estimates on other rivers I am unfamiliar with. So before I make any trip down unknown waters, I will use the path feature in google earth to estimate my trips length. With that said, I would purchase this book again if I lost the copy I have. Just full of good information and on a side note I am putting together myself a good library of Johnny Malloy books. Very jealous of the authors day job...

A must have if your looking to do kayaking in Georgia and don't know where to put in and pull out.

This book really helped me understand how to access many of the rivers in North GA. Much of this has been stolen and put on the internet, but it is a great reference for any outdoor sportsman who plans a river trip.

If you live near the coast or like fishing near the coast and in fresh water off of the coast, this is the perfect book for you. I live on the Savannah River and this book contained information to help me find new fishing areas. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to explore their waterways in GA.

I was between voting 3 and 4 stars on this and have chosen 4 because it's still useful regardless of its faults. We spent over a month all over southern Malawi and consulted this regularly. The problem is that the phone numbers are out of date and some of the info is inaccurate but that's not the fault of the author since the area keeps changing so often.If you're going to Malawi you should definitely get these guides but make sure you purchase the newest version to get the most accurate info you can get. This is already outdated.While the info can be outdated, phone numbers incorrect, business hours incorrect, etc. The maps and suggestions are invaluable. I'd suggest getting ideas from this and then doing research in the area to make sure the hours or phone numbers are right. In other words, don't completely trust the business hours, phone numbers, or addresses but definitely trust this as a source of suggestions for attractions as well as travel tips. The businesses there change so often that you can't blame a book for inaccurate addresses, hours and numbers. While we were there in the course of a month two businesses moved locations, four changed hours, and many had canceled their phones or changed their numbers.

I lived in Blantyre for three months and relied heavily on this book. It has a wealth of information on day and week-long excursions, restaurants, city highlights, transportation, and even health concerns. Yes, many phone numbers are out of date, but you'll find that Malawians change their phone numbers pretty often, so it's not the book's fault. I admired the writer's tone and condensed writing style.Lastly, if you're looking at this page, you're probably planning a trip to Malawi. It's a welcoming, gorgeous, transformative place. Eat all the avocados and mandazi balls you can find!!

Our family actually has two of these. One resides in Malawi with a family member living there. He uses it constantly and it is an invaluable resource for the traveling ex-pat. We bought a second one to prepare for and take with us on a visit this year. We, too, used it constantly, and made continual use of the directions and recommendations. I think our journey would have been much less successful without it. We did not find anything that was out of date or inconsistent with the local reality, which is extremely important when traveling in a country with limited resources and infrastructure.We also loved the sections on history, culture, and wildlife. These are a real plus in this book. Our trip was somewhat off the beaten path and we learned an enormous amount about what we were seeing and doing from this book. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about a trip to Malawi.One additional feature is the online updates available at the Bradt website. We found these equally helpful and good companion material for the book.

There is a ton of good information in this book. If you are going to travel to Malawi its a must have.

The book was for those people going into the tourist areas not the less traveled areas.

I think the book is mostly accurate. I think this was a good purchase....

Malawi is a small country by African standards, and has no high-profile star attractions.Few tourists visit more places than some beach resorts along the shores of its huge lake.Considering the above, the wealth of info on potential destinations included in this book is stunning.Not only is pretty much every sizeable town described, so are plenty of rural areas, notably obscure forest reserves, marshes and small lakes.The info on the country's wildlife and national parks is truly in-depth and very interesting. So is the background information on culture and history. Very good list of bokks recommended for further reading at the back.Also, all the practical details (with prices) on accommodation and transport options you might find in better-known series like Lonely Planet (which no longer publishes a separate Malawi guide).In fact, the only disadvantage of this book might just be that with all the recommendations, it might make you spend much longer in Malawi than you had originally planned! ;-)
