SIR CHARLES SPENCER “CHARLIE” CHAPLIN was born in 1889 in London to impoverished parents. He began performing at age ten as a member of a juvenile clog-dance troupe. In 1913, while he was touring with a vaudeville act in the US, Keystone films recruited Chaplin to make films. In only his second short—Kid Auto Races at Venice—he debuted his “Little Tramp” character, and his fame quickly exploded. He went on to write, direct, and star in some of the most critically acclaimed movies ever made, including the classics The Gold Rush, City Lights, The Great Dictator, Monsieur Verdoux, and Modern Times—for which he also wrote the song “Smile,” still a standard. In 1919 he founded the United Artists film studio along with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith, and in 1929, the first year of the Academy Awards, he won an award for “versatility and genius” in The Circus. But Chaplin’s career took a dark turn during the McCarthy era, when he was accused of “un-American activities” and monitored by the FBI; he would later satirize the McCarthy committee in his A King in New York, but when he visited the UK in 1952 his re-entry permit to the US was revoked. Objecting to what he described as “lies and propaganda by powerful reactionary groups”, he moved with his family to Switzerland, where he would live until his death on Christmas day 1977. I thoroughly enjoyed this autobiography by Charlie Chaplin in his own words. It's an interesting and intriguing read about his life from his own perspective and first-hand knowledge of events that you cannot get from any biography. With him being a film maker, his writing style keeps you very interested and engrossed from beginning to finish. He truly lived a remarkable life. I love his very matter of fact way of presenting the events in his life. It definitely puts everything that happened to him in perspective.[SPOILER ALERT!]I especially loved reading the parts about him going unrecognized dressed as himself. He was humbled when he first found out how popular he truly was. He went unrecognized on a train until it became known he was on the train. He was even the last in line for the washroom and waited in line like everyone else. There was another time when he was in NY that a cab driver drove him around all night looking for a hotel. He was trying to avoid people at his hotel but all the hotels were full. The cab driver, not recognizing him, invited him to stay with him and his family. Charlie hesitated but decided to trust him. The cab driver and his family were very surprised and happy to have him stay there as their guest. The accommodations were humble but better than what he had as a boy in London so he didn't complain.As for the scandal in his life, he talks about it in a very matter of fact way. Even he admitted he wasn't a total angel. However, hearing it from his side, shame on the US press, legal system, and government for the way they treated him. He did not deserve that! With his first 2 divorces, his young naive wives were manipulated by greedy lawyers who just saw dollar signs. So they dragged his name through the mud and scandalized the whole thing to get as much out of him as they could. The Joan Barry trial and family court hearings were used by the FBI to try to tarnish his name further. He was thankfully cleared of all criminal charges. However, in family court, he wasn't so lucky. Blood tests proved he wasn't the father of Joan Barry's child; but they were inadmissible in court at that time. Therefore, with circumstantial evidence alone, he was ruled as the father and had to pay child support. Unbelievable! Today Joan Barry would have had stalking and harassment charges brought against her. What a nut!The Communist accusations were a huge miscarriage of justice. He was not a Communist aka enemy of the US. If he had joined a US political party, I believe he would have been a Liberal Democrat. He may have associated with Communists, but that's guilt by association. He had fans and friends who were Communists before it was considered a dirty word. And he didn't believe in snubbing them when it did become a dirty word. Charlie was a humanitarian. Nothing more! He wanted to help people and help make the world a better place by pulling down barriers. He promoted peace and pointed out the evils in this world to try to get people thinking about them. His hope was perhaps they would see the evils and do something to change things for the better. Nothing wrong with that. His films are still relevant today because they are about human nature. The reason they are so hilarious is because there is so much truth in them, even today. As he put it (paraphrasing), the only thing he was guilty of was being a nonconformist. Amen to that! He was a rebel. I admire that about him because I'm a bit of a rebel myself. It took a lot of courage for him to speak the truth.I'm just glad he was finally vindicated of all of this 20 years after he left the US. He received a lifetime achievement Academy Award in 1972 and was invited to the US to receive that award. However, this autobiography was written prior to that happening. Also, when the FBI files were released to the public 50 years later, there was no evidence found that proved he was a Communist either. Despite this, it just saddens and infuriates me that he was treated so poorly. Just imagine how many more films he might have made if he hadn't gone through all that. His three films after The Great Dictator were either boycotted or banned in the US for years. They are real gems! Great films that I am so glad I had the opportunity to watch and own copies of them.After reading about his near death experiences, he definitely had someone looking out for him. He had a sixth sense about his safety, even as a child, and had some near misses. That explains why he was an agnostic. With the experiences he had, he had to believe there was a higher power out there. He was saved, I believe, because he had a purpose. His movies speak for themselves in this case. He spoke the truth and gave laughter and hope when there was none.He was not only a great comedian, but also a great visionary and artist who had the courage to pave his own path and not conform to society's norms. Because of this, his movies will remain relevant for many years to come.

The first part of his youth was interesting and Great THEN something happened. The personality of the book just shuts DOWN. Chapter upon chapter reads like a diary of meetings and dinners and luncheons. Traveling and frustration to come up with a new movie. When it came to any personal Connections Zilch !! Paulet whom he married got 2 sentences on their break up. The others in his life got detailed descriptions of their teeth. A whole third of the book was his Political feelings and what he did with them. I have Not finished this very long and boring book. I am up to the last wife. I hope it ends with more Joy and much Less humdrum stuff I could have read on the Internet. Don't bother ! The Movie was so good with Robert Downey Jr. Invest in THAT !!!!

What a wonderful book! I believe it was the first book to clarify his birth place (Walworth London England) and that Charles Spencer Chaplin was his real name. There were crazy rumors that he was born in France or that he was Jewish and that he actually had an outlandish foreign name. I think that this book is vital for anyone who likes Charlie Chaplin, or just old Hollywood in general. After all Chaplin was the most famous man on earth in the early 1900's. I also think that this book is sorely underrated, most likely because there are so many hundreds of books written about him, that his autobiography seems like just a minor step. But what's better than hearing his own account, own words and thoughts about his own life? No one knows him better than himself, and this book is definitely vital for any Chaplin lover.

After seeing the movie Chaplin (which was a superb movie), I decided to purchase this autobiography of Charlie Chaplin. Before I purchased this book, I had considered other books about Charlie Chaplin but they were not written by Charlie Chaplin. This book is warm and honest and I enjoyed it so much, it was hard to put it down.This is a beautifully done autobiography of of a very special man Charlie Chaplin.

Fascinating to learn about his childhood. Although his childhood takes up slightly more than one third of the book I could not put the book down. He explains his process for writing, directing, producing, composing, etc.. A little too much name dropping, but I guess he had the right to be so proud of keeping company with Einstein, Churchill, Kings, etc. I now realize that many classic comedy routines actually came from Chaplin, for example the candy assembly line where Lucy couldn't keep up. That came from Chaplin. In all an amazing read.

How could it not be compelling to learn what a world-renowned genius entertainer has to say about himself? One does not need to take every word at face value in order to appreciate Chaplin's vivid writing and extraordinary rags to riches story - and well-deserved riches they were. On finishing the book I immediately read the Wicki biography and while there are many ugly details to his life, he was candid enough in his autobiography and was wise not to stuff it with every unpleasant incident and frenetic headline.How remarkable it is that he and his brother overcame their Dickensian childhood. He brings you into the story so well that it's a great relief to see him emerge into a life of material well-being and recognition as a great artist, bringing joy and laughter to millions all over the world. I'm moved to see his films all over again.

The book has plenty of black and white pictures with chapters about the information regarding the Dust Bowl era, the California migration, the Great Depression, and about life during this difficult time with the Dust Bowl period.The Dust Bowl came about when billions of tons of loose soil blew across the Southern Plains in the United States. The Dust Bowl or Black Blizzard storms were disastrous not only to ecology but to the survivors, residents, and people in the Southern Plains. Many suffered and died from Dust Bowl Pneumonia.The book is well-designed with a good layout for young readers or those who don't know much about the Dust Bowl. This book is a good, solid introduction.

A very well written, gritty little slice of American history. If you even wondered why people like me don't like the term "Okie", this book will explain it. If you can read this book and not feel deeply for those folks who went through the Dust Bowl of the early 30's, you have a granite heart. Highly recommended, especially for young people who are used to having it all right now.

We don't hear much about this in schools, so it is a great history of the dust bowl and the impact it had on our country.

Cooper's description of the twin tragedy in the book Dust to Eat doesn't just explain a trying time in our own American history, but with the start of the crash of the stock market kicking in the Great Depression that lead to the Dust Bowl which consumed the great plains. This story tells us that misfortune can happen to anyone at any given time. The characters in this book are not fictional; they are real stories about our past ancestors. There is a quote in the book that really caught my attention that made me feel like I could really feel what people were going through "It fell across the city, like a curtain of black rolled down, we thought it was our judgment, we thought it was our doom". To me that seems like our ancestors did not think that they would last through the storm. While this book gives great detail about the story it provides visual photographs from the Library of Congress combined with captions and descriptions of how it is related to the passage. In the back of the book are other sources of interest that relate to prior during, and post events in American history. Overall this book was enlightening and very well written. Michael L. Cooper provided a well described era that invoked personal opinions and tragic facts. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to know what our forefathers went through to give us the life we have now.

About the Author

As a student in speech-language pathology and linguistics thirty years ago, Beverly recognized the need for providing non-native speakers instruction on the phonology (sound system) of American English. Being from a bi-lingual family, she recognized that an understanding of this system and its underlying rules would provide English learners a solid foundation for adopting the speech patterns of American English. After completing both a Bachelor s Degree and a Master s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Utah, she founded the Lingual Arts Institute for Accent Reduction. Her methods proved highly successful, and her clients were very happy with the results. She compiled her methods into a book and audio program that became The American Accent Guide. The first edition was published in 1999. On a global level, Ms. Lujan has provided American accent and communication training to thousands of international students and has provided supervision to Graduate Students in Speech-Language-Pathology at the University of Utah. The 3rd edition of Ms Lujan’s classic work, The American Accent Guide (AAG), like the 2nd edition before it, has been my go-to resource for over the past eight years in my work with adult ESL students in the USA who are specifically working to improve their American accents. I have successfully used this resource in my classroom, within online courses and for individual coaching. The book has also been invaluable for both non-native English speaking teachers (NNESTs) and international teaching assistants (ITAs) with whom I have worked. Because this latest edition is even more useful and clear, I have decided to finally take some time to offer my review in hopes that others may also find this course resource gem as useful as my students and I have. In addition, I’d like to offer some of the successful ways that I’ve used it as a foundational teaching resource.The AAG 3rd Edition improves upon the earlier edition’s effectiveness with a clearer page layout, more useful examples and exercises, and higher quality accompanying audio that now includes coverage of virtually the complete text of all 8 sections. This allows the text to be used aurally as presentation and/or reinforcement, as desired. The studio quality of the male and female voices is also an order of magnitude over the previous edition due to better noise reduction, dynamic range, and cleaner sound edits. For someone who used the older edition audio for over seven years, this sonic improvement is awesome! The mp3 audio format on the accompanying CD is easy to import and convert for mobile devices if desired, but of course one needs a PC to do this.I have over 35 years of full time higher ed and community-college experience teaching all the skills of English to adult English language learners. My long career success underscores my authority to say: "Students who systematically focus on better accent skills through direct instruction and practice are more effective communicators, improve their listening abilities, move ahead in their own schooling and career paths, and spread their linguistic confidence into other parts of their psychology.” AAG is a professional caliber resource in the toolkit to achieve this end.As an example, AAG's Section 3 on rhythm and reduction as well as Section 8 on advanced stress and intonation for affect are some of the most powerful tools in the book; both sections offer unique explanations and follow-up exercises that I noted when I first used AAG and have not seen as well done in other course materials I have reviewed over the years. In addition, Section 2 on Vowels emphasizes throughout that the key American accent concept of the duration of vowels is affected by stress, open vs closed syllables, and if closed, being followed by voiceless vs. voiced consonants. My students become expert at recognizing and producing this concept and as if by magic to them, they become better understood! Indeed, these three indicated sections which first attracted me to Ms Lujan’s work soon became the cornerstones of my own successful accent classes and coaching. I once had a young Russian-speaking student tell me after working through Sections 2 and 3 that he loved this book so much because now he was able to hear and listen to English “in color”; before he had studied using Ms Lujan’s approach in my class, he felt that the spoken English language had been just a black and white movie to him. That particular metaphor has always stayed with me and for some unknown reason has encouraged me to make even better use of the book's tools, knowing the impact they can have. My teaching mantra? Such “aha” awareness pops one’s understanding which then leads to informed practice which ultimately results in better neural habits of production and muscle memory. The systematic explanation of what makes up the American accent, clearly scaffolded with examples and exercises such as the great ones in AAG, is the foundation of this awareness and practice. Many of my students have had such “aha” moments about the American accent as a result of using Ms Lujan's book with me.I have grown wary of accent approaches if they seem to not ask much of the teacher/learner beyond well-sequenced parroting without engaging the brain for meaning or knowing why. I see the desire for such clear underlying knowledge in many critical consumer reviews of accent materials. AAG 3rd Edition is for intermediate to advanced learners; many vocabulary words in examples in the text would need to be explained for beginners. Because the book uses the International Phonetic Alphabet in explanations of concepts, it is a good tool with which to begin to nudge learners away from foreign speaking habits formed by English spelling. Of course another simple instructional "tool" is to have students repeat or respond with either the book closed or eyes on the listener to break the insidious temporal (speaking) vs. spatial (reading) connection that leads to destructive accent habits. In my experience of having worked with this material with hundreds and hundreds of students over the years, I have discovered that different kinds of students find success with AAG, ranging from self-taught individuals with powerful attention skills, to students that respond to the task focus of a teacher or coach, or to those simply social people who enjoy learning by hearing themselves and others laughing and speaking in the classroom. The organization and exercises in AAG lend themselves to all learning styles. But it is in the hands of a creative teacher or coach that the book really shines.If language is music, my accent teaching and coaching is also “musical.“ While the book is solid, rigorous, and academically sound as laid out, I professionally use the book as a sort of jazz-like “fake book" with my adult learners. As a teacher, I riff off the text, attempting to bring accent concepts super alive to learners, calling attention to their production of desired features and not much on unrelated errors. The powerful well-sequenced text lends itself well to this focus. Explanations and exercises provide my improvisation base — a call and response motif (often out of order to keep learning brain-based and not rote) where the teacher first models and then learners model to each other in various ways to focus their valuable and precious attention on speaking features of our American accent. I prize creative response because it can be done individually to a small or large group, person to person in a round-robin, eyes open or closed, standing or sitting, moving or still, etc. My directed teacher talk is continuously taking the book's rich example and exercise resources toward different cooperative learning moves that utilize what are best known to many effective classroom teachers as Kagan structures (Teacher training in Kagan tools for ESL is highly worth considering, even for adults, BTW. Do an Amazon search...)What’s great is how well this text lends itself to be used in all of these sorts of learning settings, once the teacher resolves how to take best advantage of it. In addition to traditional classes of up to 40 students or one-on-one coaching, I have also found AAG to be the cornerstone for my online accent teaching resources whether I’m using VoiceThread, Google Hangouts, or just Skype. This book and its exercises form a wonderful basis for all the extra resources and materials that I use in my internet teaching life. My students find having this book in hand to be compelling. I encourage students with whom I work online to buy the book as a way of organizing their study life and nearly all do. Having a book to mark up and dog-ear, whether in a classroom, online, or personal coaching environment, appeals to something deep within us that says I am a student and I’m serious. I’ve always found this student behavior phenomenon to be remarkable, particularly as our world becomes ever more common and digital.Ms Lujan’s book has depth and staying power as a result of her own knowledge and certification as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Her exercises and all revisions have come out of what has worked well in her clinical practice. Improving explanations, adding better exercises and re-doing the studio audio for this 3rd edition clearly show her dedication to quality. Her care as a professional comes through in the new edition of this book and will be apparent to any accent teacher or student who takes improvement seriously. This is indeed one of those "you and the author together" books. I really should have given this kind of book four stars because I could then most strongly emphasize that for AAG 3rd Edition to be perfect, whether you are using it as a student or a teacher, the book’s fifth star can only be added by a dedicated and creative you!

I purchased The American Accent Guide, 3rd Edition, to use with and recommend to clients. I am a speech therapist and voice coach and have a high regard for this book/program and have used earlier editions. Had I noticed the recent review saying that the text is too small, I may have purchased the 2nd Edition instead. However, I am very happy with the 3rd Edition and do not see a problem at all with the size of the text, because all of the exercises are in print that is large enough and easily readable. Only the explanations are in smaller print, and they are in the audio anyway. The audio is clear and professional and includes a variety of good voices. I have sent The American Accent Guide, 3rd Edition as a gift to my sister-in-law (recently from China) and am recommending it to clients. We are quite enthusiastic about this program. My sister-in-law has already downloaded the audio onto her iPod and listens to it often. Already I can understand her better over the phone. We find the lessons in the American Accent Guide, 3rd Edition very interesting as well as helpful and recommend this book and audio to anyone wishing to improve their accent.

I am not pleased with this book, since the print is extremely tiny. I am unable to use it! I would like to return it. I have since purchased the 2nd edition which is much better.

As a professional working in the field of Teaching English to Speakers Of Other Languages, I found this book to be the best source for those who wish to teach accent reduction, or to simply learn it on their own. I would have no other guide in my business or for personal preference in the classroom as well. Simply put, the best for helping others with their accent to be understood much more clearly!

This very opinionated book and should be called Neo4j Graph Databases instead. It is written in very home driven fashion by Neo4j founders to boost their database licensing business. If you are looking to work with open source graph databases and gremlin then look elsewhere. All examples are written using Neo4j's proprietary query language Cypher. I had high expectations for this book as all O'Reilly publications but this one fell short.

Although this book is not bad, I would not choose to purchase it again, for three reasons:1) It is available as an ebook from my library.2) It is not good as a reference book. Usually I purchase books that I would like to refer back to frequently, since accessing library PDFs and e-books requires a login and they are annoying to read. This one is not useful enough as a reference book to justify more than one or two reads-through.3) The book really focuses on one type of database software. Much of the material is too general or introductory to be useful, and the rest is too specific. Thus, the high cost ($30+ for little over 100 pages) is not well justified.

The book is too shallow and is rather a collection of marketing materials rather than a technical reference and guide. The book goes on and on on how good the graph databases are compared to the relational ones without really explaining how you can achieve performance in such tasks having just the single-dimensional computer memory. The examples demonstrate primitive scenarios that are far from, say, a need to model behaviour of all companies in a national market trading different goods and services using different contracts, representatives / dealers / agents, different payment terms / banks and shipping. That actually marketing booklet avoids this question very carefully as if it was not the main challenge for national governments and economists worldwide. Weaknesses of graph databases are not mentioned at all. The book is too small for $20 Kindle edition. Having this professional deepness it should offer at least 800 pages of simple news-like reading entertainment. This is the second O'Reilly book that I have tried and again I am disappointed that the mystical animal design misleads you into believing that the book has thoroughness and depth of a biological organism. I hope the O'Reilly men did not mean the audience by that picture as it would be a real offence. We deserve better books for that price and your nice designs on the cover won't help you anymore. Not buying a third one, but may recommend for a secondary school.

This book is mis-titled. It should be "Introduction to Graph Databases with Neo4j". The authors are all employees with Neo4j, and all of the discussion and examples use Neo4j. Even the query examples are limited to a language that is only supported by Neo4j! Yes other vendors are mentioned at the beginning but that is it, and the title implies more general coverage. Change the title to be more honest, or include examples from other products and include scripting language samples that are supported by more than one vendor (eg. SPARQL).

Solid book. Starts with good theory and builds from there. Also liked how they demonstrated graph modeling and how it compares and translates to relational modeling. I'm using Gremlin but the query concepts were easily translated.

Already has filled in many holes in my understanding. Written with great clarity for newbies like myself coming from corporate RDBMS backgrounds.

Strong Graph Database Resource

I started reading the Amazon "Look Inside" for this book and I could not put it down. Purchased the kindle version, continued reading on my Kindle Fire at home, on my cloud reader at work, I am learning so much so fast I cannot believe it. I arrived at this book with about 18 years database programming experience, but had never seen anything about graph databases before. This is a totally awesome book!

Overall, this is a pretty good book. However, I bought the Kindle version, and that was a mistake. The tables are all messed up and unreadable. They also are all over the page, and they seem to jam up the book, so you can't turn the pages.From reading the text, it is a great book, but it should not be sold as a Kindle if the Kindle reader can't display the material.

This is a wonderful text and written by a girl geek in plain English. Whooot Whooot. Very clear pics and several web sources to visit for more info are included. I subscribe to MAKE magazine and pre-ordered the print (not kindle) version when I saw that it would soon be available. Didn't disappoint me. Love it Love it Love it. It's an easy read. If you know almost nothing of electronics you can figure out what she's saying (I'm an engineer...but you don't have to be one)... and with very little investment you too can become a "maker" -- if you want to see what's out there, visit a Maker Faire -- they are held in Michigan (Ann Arbor, Detroit), the West Coast, Atlanta...all over. And check out instructables online too -- you'll find many examples of embedded electronics in clothing. This book is probably the best "How-To" I've ever read. Get it, and you won't be disappointed. I promise.

A good introduction to wearables covering a variety of techniques, sensors and boards. A good "idea" generator book. The author's experience as a faculty shows through as a well written "textbook" or "lab manual". Recommended as a first book on wearables.

Probably one of the best books about. Electronics and the arduino microprocessor I have read. A must have in the hobbyist's library!

Kate explanations goes from the basics to the more advanced.Her book was very useful to me because I was interested in creating wearable clothes and I could understand the "how tos" as well as the the difficulties I could possible get into. There are easy and not so easy projects propositions

I have been studying TSI study guides to improve my skills in math. THIS BOOK HELPED SO MUCH. This book explains each subject on the test in a detailed but concise way that makes it enjoyable to read. They took the time to put key info in bold letters which helped me when I wanted to reread something for a reference point.The highlights of this book are most definitely the large, detailed diagrams in the math sections, and the detailed explanations in the reading sections.The diagrams are VERY DETAILED. (pic inserted) That was so helpful for me especially when it came to the Geometry and Measurement, and the Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability sections.In the reading sections, I really appreciate the fact that they actually put questions in the discussion of the presented text for the reader. They present key questions the reader can ask that can help the reader to try to break down that particular text.

When I get a review book, I always want something to help me not only give me review test, but provide me explanations to answers for each question. This allows me to not only understand what I may have gotten wrong, but to go back and study harder in that section. The APEX Test Prep guide provides just that in helping bread down each section of the review. What I also like about this review book is how thick the pages are. My highlighting does not go through the pages. That is a major plus when I am studying.

Grade 7 Up–Bausum peels back the layers of the story of the women's suffrage movement, exposing grit, fiery determination, and radical tactics. After covering the importance of familiar names, she devotes the bulk of the book to the events of 1906 to 1920, when a new group of young women emerged who were willing to truly suffer for suffrage. The movement split into two camps–Carrie Chapman Catt's larger National American Woman Suffrage Association working conservatively to gain the vote state by state, and a smaller, more contentiously radical organization, the National Woman's Party led by Alice Paul, focusing on a federal amendment. Bausum highlights the tension between these factions in well-documented detail and casts it against the greater picture of controversy within and surrounding the national and state governments, as well as World War I. She portrays her suffragist heroines as iron-jawed women totally devoted to their cause. Cloth is a recurrent theme, as the author describes the suffragists' tricolored banners, sashes, pennants, and sewn signs. Vintage photographs, some never before published, depict key figures in the movement speaking, protesting, parading, picketing, and going to jail. Bausum's careful research is evident throughout, with sources thoroughly cited and a text studded with original source quotations. Gr. 6-12. Though few readers will pick this up for browsing, students will be easily drawn by the details of the American women's suffrage movement. As a child, the author met Alice Paul, a famous suffragist, and was clearly inspired. This personal interest drives the detailed history, written in an objective but anecdotal fashion. The design is thoughtful and attractive: sepia-tone photographs are highlighted in purple and gold (purple, gold, and white were the signature colors of the movement), the dark purple text is clean, elegant and very readable, and the general layout is artfully done. Detailed notes, bibliography, thumbnail biographies, and a chronology make this an all-in-one text that provides a general background to a very specific time within the movement. The timely release of this title will make every woman more appreciative of the Nineteenth Amendment, as well as the tremendous sacrifices that made it happen. This book was a tremendously interesting read. We all remember the stories in high school history class about the Suffragettes marching with placards to secure the vote for women. What we didn't learn was how horribly they were treated and that it took 72 years to secure the vote. This book should be read by every high school girl so that she realizes what these women went through to make sure voting is a right for women as well as men.

We had already watched Iron Jawed Angels, and been to the Sewall Belmont museum, so there was very little new information, but for a middle school student being introduced to the topic of the suffrage movement, the book was great.

A great overview of the Women's Suffrage Movement, with focus on the later years. The book is aimed at children, but, as an adult I found it to be very informative. I liked the focus on the banners used in parades and protests. The author gives clarity to a complicated subject. Thanks!

I highly recommend this book to all women just to learn how women were treated in their fight to be enfranchised and allowed to vote under the 14th amendment. Very little is written about the suffrage movement when I was in school in the 1970's. Men treated women as second class citizens from beginning of time and over 60 years later we are still not treated equal today. Our government gives business's and companies tax breaks to ship jobs to China giving the majority of Chinese women jobs just to make the almighty business exces wealthier. Why don't they think about all the jobless women in the USA struggling to make a living.

Great book with primary sources to teach intermediate elementary students the history of women's suffrage. There are a few minor moments where subjective language is used to paint a picture of certain historical figures, but otherwise a fair and intriguing read for parents and students alike.

Bought this for my daughter-in-law at her request for Christmas. She is enjoying reading it between taking care of two babies. It encourages her.

The publications of the National Geographic Society encompass some of the finest non-fiction titles for kids on the planet. Year after year this company churns out remarkable historical, scientific, and cultural tomes that are not only readable, but also lively, informative, and well-researched. "With Courage and With Cloth", one of the very few children's books to delve into women's suffrage in any depth, is no exception. It offers amazing information that everyone should know, and so few do. Unfortunately, it suffers from its format. While the text is brilliant and the pictures sublime, the layout of the book will undoubtedly turn off some readers, while those seeking information about the photographs will be up a tree. A fine fine book that could've used some fine fine tuning.Author Ann Bausum has this to say about American history. Learning about history in school, "I knew all about Washington and Lee, Marshall and Eisenhower. History seemed to be a progression of stories about men and wars and conquest". How much did any of us learn about women getting the vote in school? As I recall, it consisted of one or two sentences in a textbook amounting to something like, "And then in 1920, women were given the right to vote under the 19th Amendment". Goodnight, everybody! The real story behind that teeny little sentence, however, is immense. It's a story that spans more than seventy-two years and was won with literal blood, sweat, and tears. Through this book we meet great heroes like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth. We hear about how the suffragists repeatedly split into two different factions and how these factions worked separately to bring about an amendment to the constitution. We see the heroism of the women (dealing with particularly disgusting forced feedings, beatings at the hands of sailors, and rat infested cells) and witness their less than shining moments as well (in regards to their treatment of African-American women). By the time the amendment comes to a vote and has to be ratified by thirty-six states, the book has become an edge-of-your-seat thriller. You may know the ending already, but it's a heckuva ride getting there.Bausum writes in a style befitting of the heroes she's commending. She never shies away from the movement's prejudices and problems, but at the same time it's clear that these women were particularly exceptional. The book even goes so far as to include a section on the Equal Rights Amendment (something I can honestly say I have never before witnessed in a kids' text). On top of that you have profiles of all the major players, a chronology of events, a resource guide, sources and acknowledgements, a bibliography, an index, and a list of books about the suffragists that I spent the better part of last night copying down so that I could read them later. Obviously, I would have liked there to have been some more sections on the African-American women and their take on suffrage. There's an excellent passage quoting Sojourner Truth's, "And Ain't I A Woman" speech and some mild references to racism in the south and within the movement, but these are kind of glossed over.The layout of the book is the only real problem with it. The photographs that dot almost every page are accompanied by pale light brown captions that will be almost impossible to read if your child has less than stellar eyesight. Also, some of these pictures are stunning or shocking to the point that you'd love to learn more about them. Unfortunately, nine times out of ten the images you see here are given brief three to four line captions and then never mentioned in the text. It makes for slightly frustrating reading. The colors of the book (purple, brown, and white) are lovely, but don't quite make up for the difficult-to-read-text.But that's neither here nor there. The fact of the matter is that the book fills a very great need. No library in the country is complete without it. If you've children who considers themselves to be experts on American history, brother they don't know nuthin' until they've read "With Courage and With Cloth". A remarkable creation and a necessary read. Perhaps even moreso for adults.

This book is written for children, but I found it invaluable. Written in easy to digest, but poignant bits of information, it provides snap shots of the main players and a sequence of event leading up to the final goal. The pictures and quotes artfully featured throughout the book highlight attitudes and the era in which the last push took place. The Bibliography provides a great guide for further reading. There is also a section giving information about some of the main women supporters, helping clarify who each one is ( when reading the story I found on occasion I got the people mixed up and this section helped straighten out everything beautifully).
