About the Author

Photographer Kevin Horan stumbled across his most inscrutable subjects — goats — when he moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2007 after working as a photojournalist for more than 30 years. The former Chicagoan befriended the four-legged residents of his neighbor's farm and became fascinated with their human-like qualities. He soon began taking their pictures in a traditional portrait format. The idea was to take common barnyard creatures and lend them an aristocratic dignity. Since that first encounter on Whidbey Island, Horan has continued taking portraits of animals. The process looks at animals as people, people as animals, and the planet as a very small place, he says. Treated as portrait subjects, they seem to have personalities. A former contributor to The New York Times Magazine, U.S. News & World Report, Smithsonian, and other publications, Horan has documented the rich variety of human lives and faces.

I was looking for an office calendar that wasn't too cutesy, but still made me smile. This calendar has beautiful photos, with a classic font, and a nice medium weight stock paper. I like the black and white look, that keeps it more subtle for my office, but still eye catching with the adorable goats and quotes. Will definitely keep an eye out for the 2020 version.

Ordered my usual Anne Taintor calendar and it was on backorder for two months..ugh. This was at a great price, and goats are also pretty great, so went with it. I have a new favorite calendar...wonderful, resonant quotes and goats with gravity, man. Love it.

This may be strange, but I get a kick out of goats. They're funny & playful & seem to have a grip on the world that we don't. Looking at them on this calendar keeps me from getting to serious about life in general.

Item came as described. Paper quality is good. Photo quality is very good, which makes it funnier. It is a calendar with goat glamor shots and philosophy quotes.

I am not gluten free but have cooked for a dear family member who is extremely gluten sensitive. It is evident this author has done her research. For instance who in the "gluten" world would even think to use a correct cocoa powder?! Or that there are UNcomplicated substitutes for bread flour? Or to thoroughly READ THE INGREDIENTS?! I also realized I must be very careful to not cross contaminate GF ingredients while cooking. Oh my goodness, I love the lay-out, definitions, explanations and the "Internationally Inspired" recipes! My mouth is watering! Gotta give it 5 stars!Dawn D.

I liked the “know your ingredients” section giving me information on items I was not familiar with in the recipe. Also, it was great to find different gluten recipes than the same old standards. Great find.

I've been reading up and thinking about going gluten free hoping it would help with health issues. This book gave me some recipes that I am excited to try out and I don't think it will upset my children. They don't like to eat "healthy" foods. But this book has some recipes that we normally eat like meatball subs, and with just some slight variations make it gluten free. I plan on making it for dinner tonight. This book also give variations which is helpful and the directions are easy to follow. I just don't think I will be using all the recipes because some seem too complicated and not for me and my family's taste preferences. However, there are many recipes that are simple and I am looking forward to testing them out. I think this book will bring me into the right direction of going gluten free. I received this book for free with the option to review or not.

I was given a free copy for an honest review and this book Wow'ed me. I would have gladly paid for it. The I liked the “know your ingredients” sections are great. The recipes are well written and are quite varied. There is something for everyone in this book, all while taking gluten sensitivity into account. I would have liked photographs of finished dishes but otherwise great.

This cookbook is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection. The recipes are easy to read and follow, well written, and give clear concise instructions. They literally bring the tastes of world wide cuisines to the reader. I have tried several and have been impressed with the rich flavors. Highly recommend.

This graphic novel is the precursor to the Aronofski-directed motion picture “Noah”, released in 2014. It shares the same story-line, but differs from the movie in its graphic depiction of environments and characters. Taken on its own artistic merit, it is a beautifully-drawn, very atmospheric water-colored graphic novel, with the well-paced story of Noah and the flood, which becomes a bit unusual relative to the expectations of casual Bible-readers.The story actually follows closely the Jewish understanding of Biblical flood, interpreted in Mishna and the apocryphal Book of Enoch which expanded the story of Noah to multiple pages. This Jewish understanding of the flood negates the core tenet of Christianity that Creator will save each and every Christian individually. Instead, the story illustrates a profoundly Jewish morality of justice: getting what men deserve! - Creator is no Savior, there is no blanket absolution of sins, and no salvation for the sinners who repent. (it is important not to have sinned in the first place) There is just judgment and punishment rendered.There is an aspect to this that could be shocking to modern individualist sensibility: - all men are judged and condemned to extermination on a societal scale: corrupt civilization is understood as inseparable from corrupt individuals, being the cause and the effect at once. This again goes against Christian belief in individual salvation, paradoxically held by EVERY Christian...The antediluvian world shown in the graphic novel is epic, elemental and archaic, yet also virile and young- with the starry-speckled sky at daytime as if the atmosphere has not yet condensed enough. Notably, this world is the only world: - The Garden of Eden is something that once was and that men destroyed. Like in the Jewish Bible, there is no mention of any afterlife or paradise whatsoever. The fallen angels, called "watchers", are as much a part of this – our - world environment as men. Creator has established the natural order of things, yet he acts through human agency for anything not-natural, like building an ark.This story offers a powerful message: On one hand, the power over the world and the responsibility for the world cannot be uncoupled, and the responsibility for the world rests as much in the hands of man as it does in the hands of its Creator. Men's mistakes are not easily righted. Through this message of responsibility, the story of Noah ultimately asserts the importance of practicing goodness, daily!To the open-minded and those who are un-afraid to challenge their notions, this book has much to offer. Also, I’m very pleased with the way the story acknowledges one of the most curious verses in the Bible (Genesis 6:1-4) and borrows from the apocryphal Book of Enoch, creating an intriguing mythology for the novel. The graphic novel tells a compelling story, even if the main character is hard to root for at times. Whether this novel is true to the biblical rendition of Noah’s tale is a separate question. But standing alone, I thought this graphic novel was very well done.

So, I guess this is based on the original screenplay for the movie, Noah. I have not seen the movie, so I don't know how much of this book makes it to the movie's final screenplay, but reading this graphic novel makes me more interested in seeing the movie version of Noah.For those that don't know, this book is a kind of sci-fi retelling of the story of Noah and the ark (and the great flood). I enjoyed the sci-fi twist on the story.Niko Henrichon's art is great. It's a much looser style than he used in The Pride of Baghdad (another graphic novel he illustrated, written by Brian K Vaughn (Y: The Last Man, Saga) about a pride of lions that escaped the Baghdad zoo during the US invasion of Iraq). Niko's rough mark making and limited color palette really help sell the drought stricken environment where this story takes place. You really feel the dirt and grit that these characters live in.The only thing I can think that might turn people off is if you're Christians and you're offended by a less conventional twist on the telling of a Bible story. To them I'd say that the themes and core of the story remain the same, while adding an injection of imagination into the visuals. Not being a Christian, I was not bothered by this take on Noah, and I'd recommend it to anyone, religious or not (or of any religion, really). In fact, I might get this for my brother who has very strong Christian beliefs.

A great re-telling and re-imagining of the story of Noah. It is a fantastic remix of contemporary problems, Enoch, and Genesis. Definitely recommend. Much better than the move.

This is the latest bande desinee by auteur Darren Aronofsky, it's based on the first draft of the script for his upcoming movie, if the story has the same elements, and dark themes it's going to be a great one, the biblical elements brought out by the fantastic art are ones that you'll be staring for minutes, my only problem is that it is a very fast read, but otherwise entertaining.

This is based on the first draft of the screenplay, which underwent further rewriting and revisions. As such, the film works better, and the themes are sharper. Seen through the artist's eyes, this is a different visual treatment, and it's almost equally gorgeous (if not as awe-inspiring). It's kind of fun to compare the two versions and see what changes were made along the way.

Awesome interpretation of the classic Noah story. Really makes it come to life on its own, rather than just a near incomprehensible event in the bible. Granted, is dressed up a bit to be entertaining, but if you are interested in this, you aren't looking for a literal biblical interpretation - something more entertaining awaits you here.

Recently GMO pointed me to a book about the way cultural teachings about right and wrong are shaped by various other cultural norms. In the West, for example, we are brought up to believe that law embodies right and that lawlessness is evil run rampant. Each person stands on his own before the judge, and each is responsible to comply with the law in his own strength of character. This cultural model affects the way we understand the gospel, too. For us, the story of sin and salvation works out in our individual lives, placing each of us alone before God to deal with our individual sin for our individual salvation.Until I read The 3D Gospel, I did not realize that the gospel could be understood any other way. I would have said, and I would have been very sure that I was right, that this is how God sees it. In the past, exposure to other cultural patterns before I read 3D Gospel led me to believe that other cultures needed to “grow up” and see it our way.The author of The 3D Gospel makes it very clear that our understanding that the Bible is for everyone is absolutely true. Cultures in which the individual has an overarching responsibility to avoid bringing shame to the family, the local community, or the tribe are known to God, and they are loved. God did not forget them when he inspired the language of the Bible. God also lovingly integrated into Scripture language that resonates with cultures who fear the spirit realm and have developed their communal deportment to manipulate spiritual power. The Bible, in fact, embodies all three of the cultural views of right and wrong that shape cultures around the world. I was already familiar with stories and Bible verses that address the way each form of culture receives the good news about Jesus, but when I heard those words in the past, my mind immediately translated each story and each verse into my own cultural worldview.The notion that people from the USA feel a need to educate people in other cultures to think the way we think is one of the most reviled images of America. That attitude is at the root of rejection of Americans and American ideas. It is an attitude unbecoming to someone who wants to share Jesus, the light of the world, with people who live in darkness. Many people around the world speak and write English with great skill. For that reason it is easy for us to wrongly believe that we all think alike. We don’t. The 3D Gospel is a good introduction for any person who loves people and wants to tell everyone about Jesus.

Many have seen this book as primarily a missiology book about how to communicate the Gospel in non-Western cultures. I am recommending it for it's helpfulness to Westerners and ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE GOSPEL. Many evangelicals see the gospel too exclusively through the understanding of Penal Substitutionary Atonement (PSA).Although I have some quibbles with some elements of PSA, I affirm the strong scriptural basis for most of that understanding of the Gospel, but not as the only understanding or the most primary understanding of the Gospel. Several other authors, especially those working in non-Western cultures, have observed that PSA tends to be much less compelling of an understanding in those cultures than other presentations, such as the Satisfaction Theory of St. Anselm or Christus Victor. SOME OF THESE NON-PSA UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE GOSPEL HAVE SURPRISINGLY STRONG SCRIPTURAL SUPPORT, for those of us who take our PSA goggles off and look with greater openness at the scriptural data. This book is an easy, concise way to look at the gospel in its more multi-faceted completeness. It is apparent that the Gospel is more broadly relevant to cultures and human needs than a PSA-proscribed mindset tends to be. I keep thinking, "How did I miss all of these other truths about the Atonement and the Gospel?" I'd been suffering from an eclipse of the Gospel by PSA, despite my decades of studying the Bible!In the back of my Bible on my page of my notes for presenting the Gospel I have written this reminder: "Jesus is the answer/cure for... --guilt --shame --weakness --meaninglessness --badness/sinfulness --pride --foolishness"It's true that people have a guilt problem needing forgiveness, even if they might at a point in time be more concerned about their shame or by the seeming meaninglessness of their lives. God cares about bringing solutions to all of these other needs through the Gospel too. He has provided through the gospel much more than forgiveness. All of the various "God-shaped vacuum" needs of unbelievers are rightly used by God to draw precious people to Himself. For believers, we too need the Full Gospel of Jesus Christ to touch every need we have.

This book is an excellent introduction and primer on the "3 cultures" model. It is the best short treatment I've read. It helps us to understand why people in countries around the world say and do things that we often misunderstand - and it applies to any context: commercial, political, religious, etc., The focus of the text is, of course, the application of the principles to Christian evangelism and mission, but if you don't understand the culture at large then you'll likely be frustrated in cross-cultural religious work.For those unaware of it, the "3 cultures" model describes human societies as operating on the basis of maximizing (building up) the first and minimizing (or reducing) the second of the following values:- Innocence/Guilt (predominantly seen in what we today call "Western" cultures);- Honor/Shame (predominantly seen in what we consider "Eastern" or Asian cultures); and- Power/Fear (predominantly seen in tribal cultures.No culture is purely of one type, however, and although the text is brief, it gives enough examples to understand both the general cultures and common exceptions within them.Of great value for evangelism and missions are the two sections:- one lists various traits/values that are taught in Scripture and relate especially to one or the other of the 3 culture models; and- the other presents the essential Gospel story in a suitable form for each of the culture models.I think this is the best low-cost presentation of the model, that has both theory and practice.

3 maps in one: overall, large "suburban/metropolitan" map (on 2 sides)is scaled at 1:15,000. 6.5" x 10" map of broader area (expanding to about 30-40 min. outside the city center) is 1:200,000. A third map of the city center/old town is 6.5" x 12" is scaled at 1:10,000. Bus routes are shown, as are freeway interchanges, railroad lines, pedestrian areas and tourist sites (though this section is a little "busy" to easily spot things). For the old town area, I would recommend picking up a free map at the Information Center at Mozart Platz.

Just OK (Couldn't find any other) - I wanted a street map for navigating, but it was too cluttered. This map has soooooo much detail, including individual buildings, that it was hard to read while driving around.Nice quality map, just not what I needed.

it was an excellent map but it was a bit large to be useful. it was more for a drive.

I can highly recommend this book, in fact a detailed map, tho those who intend to visit Salzburg and surroundings.
