Had to use this for a class, the content was generally pretty good. The authors cover the critical concepts generally well, but the verbose nature of the composition is unnecessary. I ended up buying "The Kimball Group Reader - Remastered Collection", which has a much better flow and an engaging read, plus it is much more economical. Unlike the price for MDBM edition 12 -- beyond reasonable! Even for the rental.Such is the racket that Pearson is known to have a near monopoly on the college and university market. FTC should investigate. Seriously, it is nothing short of racketeering.

This isn't one of those books you can quickly scan and understand. Rather, it's a text you find a quiet place and dedicate team to interpret and appreciate the foundation of E-R model. Once I realized the difference (by Chapter 3 I went back to chapter 1), and spent hours with each chapter, I could appreciate that everything was presented logically and of necessity. Excellent text - a keeper.

Content was mediocre, but the presentation in the kindle version was terrible. The table of contents had so many headings (often more than one per page of content) that trying to move to a location in the second half of the book required a ton of scrolling through the list.I also inadvertently tried to open the book on one too many devices. Typically, Kindle books can be read on up to 6 devices, but this one balked on device #4. I got a warning that I needed to deregister it from a device to download it again. I tried doing so on my home PC and phone, so I could access from the laptop I use for the class which assigned the book, and it still didn't work. I had to make sure that I had my iPad with me because that was the only device which could still access the content. Of course, I could have purchased it again. Given the price of this book, I assume that the publishers cracked down on usage on concurrent devices because they knew otherwise students would try to share it and they'd miss out on gouging as many students as they can.

Let's break down one of his sentences:"The explanation earlier in this chapter of the database development process referred to several different, but related, models of databases developed on a systems development project."Book is about 500+ pages, and probably could be reduced to 400 pages, if the author knew how to condense the english language, and use better words, around commas. I wouldn't even consider it verbose, it's almost like someone sleep talking.

Took longer than expected to receive the book, it was nicely shrink wrapped but I noticed corners were wrinkled (cant blame paper back) and a stain on the inside of back cover page (not sure how that happened). Contents are the same as the American version, but it was cheaper to buy than rent this semester.

I read this cover to cover as a casual database user. Never designed a database in my life or been responsible for database administration. This book provided some good high-level context to me about databases, and reinforced and added to my knowledge about querying databases. The text is a little disjointed (jumping from text to SQL to C to JavaScript just assuming the reader could comprehend the what and why of the code). It's all written for Oracle, so some of the functions simply are irrelevant if you don't use that expensive but powerful system. One last thought. The text is very verbose. Lots of sentences with highlighted keywords and no definitions. Don't try to define a word by using it in a sentence. Too much of the material made me say "huh?? what information was imparted here?" But there are good nuggets buried in the dross.

I'm a little irritated. When you try to download the Access version for the big Pine Valley Furniture Company it links to the ASCII version. If you replace the file name with BigPVFC11e.zip you will get the file. However the examples in chapter 2 don't actually match what you download. So the queries they show you as an example don't work. You can still play with the tables but for a $200 book you think they would make sure their website is accurate.The information in the book seems comprehensive.

Basically, the information this book contains is rendered inaccessible by the poor presentation.Remember writing that paper where you needed more length, so you went back and reworded everything to be expressed in a more complicated way? That's this textbook. Sentences are needlessly long, making content more difficult to absorb. Word choices are fluttery and fanciful when they need to be brick-solid. The prose squanders my time and my attention.Composition is bad. This book consistently names something I've never heard of, talks for a few paragraphs about it as though I know what it is, leads me to believe I've missed something and maybe I should go back and find it, and then finally defines the thing. Additionally, time after time something is brought up and then dismissed as being "beyond the scope of this text" or contained in proper detail in some other, future chapter (your princess is in another castle...).Images are never anywhere near the point in the text that references them! Reading about figure X-X? Well, figure X-Y is directly adjacent to what you're reading, and X-X is two pages back. For an e-book this is impossible to deal with, and even for a physical copy this would be ridiculous.And the jokes? Yes, it's got jokes. They aren't good. They aren't funny. They are meant to be a way of keeping the reader engaged, but they fall flat and they take up space I had hoped would contain useful information.This textbook is awful. It contains mountains of good information, but the writing is so bad as to render the content inaccessible.

I credit this book for quickly getting me up and running 11gR2 on Red Hat Linux. I have years of experience running Oracle on Microsoft Windows servers but I'm new to Linux and this book showed me the way and the tools I would need for installing and navigating Linux O/S, X11, VNC, ASM and bash shell. Great resource and time saver.

Very good mix of relevant OS and Oracle topics. A great reference book for a Linux Oracle DBA, or someone who has to manage a database on Linux, but doesn't have an Oracle DBA background.

Well written, has enough of the facts to be a good guide, scripts are good examples, well explained. This is more of a how than a why book. Product arrived on time and was as advertised.

If you can write c and korn shell script then save your $.

It is wornderful book for DBA's who are trying to switch to LInux platform. Equally useful for others too because I learnt Oracle as well as Linux from this.Please bring these types of books for Unix. and other dedicated topics likeExport/import recipies, Migration recipies etcWow! wonderful

During the 1990s, Bell Labs teamed up with Robert Kelley, a Carnegie Mellon professor and organizational consultant to study what actually made their people productive. This book is the result of a 10-year long assessment.While the focus of the work was on productivity, they studied those who were deemed "stars" at work by peers and superiors. At the time, it was assumed that some pre-determined trait such as intelligence or personality would determine who the stars were. This turned out not to be true, and a good thing because, as Kelley identifies, since the traits of stars are identifiable behaviors (he calls them strategies) then anyone can adopt them and anyone can be a star!Here are the 9 strategies they identified, in order of importance:-Initiative: blazing trails in the organization's white spaces.-Networking: knowing who knows by plugging into the knowledge network-Self-management: managing your whole life at work.-Perspective: getting the big picture.-Followership: checking your ego at the door to lead in assists.-Leadership: doing small-l leadership in a Big-L world.-Teamwork: Getting Real about Teams-Organizational Savvy: Using street smarts in the corporate power zone.-Show-and-tell: Persuading the Right Audience with the right message.Kelley wants to distinguish between what most people perceive these strategies to be and the way that stars actually implement them. For example, with initiative he points out that while average performers think initiative means coming up with ideas to help them do their jobs better, stars view initiative as taking them into the white space beyond their job descriptions. (As a side note, I was struck that his number one characteristic of initiative seems very similar to Covey's first habit "Be Proactive.")Still, I'm having trouble with the easy jump from "most productive workers" to "star." Is the objective to be better than your co-workers so that you get promoted (and they don't) or is it to be more productive, as an individual and as an organization?I'm not sure that it logically follows that those selected as "stars" were necessarily the most productive workers of the enterprise. For example, one of the attributes of the stars was that they tapped into and exploited the expert networks but without the experts there wouldn't be much for the stars to do. One test for a strategy is to think "what if everyone did this" and here I'm not sure this particular trait holds up.At the same time, if these are the traits of the most productive workers then we should be able to increase overall productivity by getting everyone to follow these behaviors.Since the behaviors seem helpful, then what I'm interested in is how would we organize ourselves so that these behaviors are encouraged and naturally arise? You must be wondering why I use the title "A wonderful book to read" and not something else if I were to rate the book 5 stars. This is the first book that I have given full score.I am an avid reader on performance management and the list of criteria to increase productivity and recognition is not new. However, the similarity with other books stops there. Robert E. Kelley put new meaning into the 9 identified criteria to be a star performer. He gave a new meaning to the criteria "initiative", "organisation savvy" and many others. You need to read the book in order to appreciate the meaning in the context that he had deftly written them.I believe thoroughly based on what I read that anyone who could master the 9 criteria stated would become a star performer. However, there is a catch. Robert told the reader that you need to possess all 9 criteria and to practise them concurrently. That is a big challenge because any other management book will give you praises if you could manage to be proficient in one to two of the identified skills.I am not discouraged by the need for all 9 skills to be practised together and so you should not be either. I read alot and only once in a few years do I find a book that totally redefines my picture of the world. This is such a book."How to Be a Star at Work" is a must read for every employee who wants to become more effective at work and in life, and managers/recruiters that want to improve their team effectiveness over time. What really impressed me is how much sense it really makes, yet how different the attributes indicated as important to develop are from those most commonly associated with stardom.In that the attributes identified can all be learned and improved throughout a career, it brings me great hope and faith.

You need to read and re-read this book if:1) you are a person with an undergraduate technical degree,working in a business setting.2) you are a person with any type of advanced graduate degree working in any aspect of the private sector.3) you are responsibile for supervising and leading "brainpowered" workers.4)you are involved with technology-based Knowledge Management initiatives in your organization, and you need to know how the highest performing brainpowered workers collect, process, and repackage an organization's business and technical knowlege.The title is a clear and honest summary of the book's contents. Ironically, many of the people who would most benefit from this book would be prone to skip over something with this title, dismissing it as a non-serious or non-useful effort. Do not make that mistake!Take a look inside it, and see that it is in fact a highly credible and useful summary of everyday work practices frequently used by the elite of the high performing brainpowered workers.
