This book is blunt, a shock, and exactly what I needed to wake up and see what men are really like and what they think about us.Luckily I read this book previous to meeting a man at a concert. I normally wouldn't ask questions because I was raised that it isn't appropriate. But I asked a lot of questions, and he answered them. Found out on the 2nd date that he had a cocaine addiction, almost lost his job, owns nothing after working for a good company for 28 years, and now addicted to other things that drain his wallet, and has an STD.He couldn't wait until the 3rd date because then we could go all the way! Who made up that rule? But it's in the book.The book really helped me out. And I reread it alot and wrote key things down so I would remember.The book made me realize that I'm pretty awesome, doing great, and I don't want a guy at all!They just want to use us!

This book truly changed my love life in a way that no other book, seminar or workshop has. I was single for over a decade. About 3 months after reading this book, multiple guys were wanting to get serious with me and about 10 months after, I met a wonderful guy, and we're in a healthy, loving long-term relationship. Part of why I was single for so long was me and my issues (such as trust, abandonment, fear of divorce, daddy issues, etc). Part of why I was single was also due to living in major cities like DC & NYC, where the culture places career first, relationships 2nd or 3rd, and the pool of men were happy to stay single and unattached for as long as possible. I spent years working on myself trying to attract an amazing relationship - I had a lot of work to do, and I buckled down and did it. I think of this book as the final tipping point for me to develop into a person who can attract amazing relationships. This book is a bit of tough love, but it's so worth it because it pushes you to be honest with yourself about your behavior. It compares and contrasts two types of women - placeholders and game changers, and clearly shows what the behaviors are of these two types are. The book lays it out as simple as "Do This" or "Don't do This." If you read this book, and truly study it and make changes in your mindset and behavior, you will see results. I littlerally would read over certain chapter before going on dates and it was a huge help. As someone who has read almost every book under the sun about relationships & dating in addition to taking courses and working with private dating coaches, this book truly lays out the best content to make a real change and transformation in finding the love that you deserve.

I read this book for the first time about two and a half years ago, started to practice it, got mixed results, read it again, internalised some more, got a little better results and repeated until I met a man who has managed to rock my world and make all my girlfriends jealous for a bit more than a year now. He did test me in a variety of ways and I could have never ever ever ever gone through the first five or so dates being so self-confident, unbothered and enjoying myself in the process had I never had GL's book.GL taught me everything that my parents never did and helped me find the peace of mind and confidence that I never thought I had. Through stumbling and a couple of failed attempts, little victories and a massive amount of self discovery I learnt to accept the amazing person that I was and commit to becoming the person I was always meant to be.As for the men.. My younger self could have never imagined that some men absolutely love to spoil their women, granted, if you let them! There are no guarantees of anything in life but this experience has given me the confidence that I can attract and retain a man of that caliber - if not even better.Update a month later: we're engaged now.

A must-have for today’s woman!

Many on leadership as that that's my professional passion and others on relationship as since my divorce I seem to have attracted what my mom refers to as bottom feeders. My divorce rocked my world and I can't help but think had a serious impact on my self esteem, etc. I loved Lambert's direct, in your face approach to helping those of us who have been the "typical" women realize how short we sell ourselves in relationships. This text was written by an engineer, for engineers, LOADED with detailed technical specifications.With that aside, there is a lot of facinating sections spelling out how he (and many at that time 60+ years ago) thought a manned mission to Mars would happen, especially comparing it to Columbus exploring the Americas with 3 ships, etc. Highly recommended for any major Space Nerd..

"Project Mars" answers a burning question long posed by serious students of aerospace history: "What in the world did Wernher von Braun do for those five long years between 1945 and 1950 while he was cooling his heels in near-isolation at Fort Bliss, Texas?" The answer is that, among other things, he wrote this book."Project Mars" is a fictionalized tale about the first manned expedition to the Red Planet. As a science fiction novel, it has little to recommend it. Its stodgy style, tortured dialog passages and primitive narrative structure are even worse than most other contemporary books of the genre--which did not set the bar very high themselves. For example, have you ever heard a real person use the word "obstreperous" in ordinary conversation? Some of this may, of course, be due to its translation from German into English, but, even so, "Project Mars" is a breathtakingly bad novel. It's easy to understand why it languished in unpublished limbo for 60 years.However, as a detailed technical description of the hardware, operational concepts and design challenges involved in mounting a massive ten-spacecraft Mars expedition, firmly grounded in the knowledge and engineering techniques available in the late 1940s, "Project Mars" is a superb and important historical document. Remember that, when von Braun wrote it, Sputnik I, the first artificial Earth satellite, was still 10 years in the future. At that time, very few people took seriously the idea of "men" journeying into space. The very thought of a mission to another planet was laughable. "Project Mars" is, in essence, a primer on elementary spaceflight concepts for readers who had never heard of such a thing before. The exhaustive, excruciatingly detailed descriptions of the spacecraft, the orbital trajectories, the mission timelines, the mass budgets and so on were thus necessary to convince readers that such an expedition was technically feasible. Unfortunately, we'll never know if it would have had the intended effect, since it did not see the light of day until long after spaceflight became "routine."All things considered, I rate "Project Mars" with four stars because of its depth, scope and historical significance. Its magnificent, exquisitely printed Chesley Bonestell paintings alone are nearly worth the price of admission. It should appeal to readers with a real interest in finding out what one of the two greatest rocket engineers of the 20th century (the other being Sergei Korolev) thought about the future of the technology he developed. But "Project Mars" is pretty deep and very technical, so casual readers will probably want to give it a pass.

Here it is at last: a translation into English of the original German text of "Das Marsprojekt", "The Mars Project", as penned down by Wernher von Braun in Fort Bliss at the end of the forties. That was the age of some belief in the coming exploration of Space, and, at the same time, a rank disbelief on the practicabilities of the "Buck Rogers stuff". The novella text was probably not meant for publication, and, mercifully, it was not published before now. One shudders when thinking of the impact it could have had if published, say, in 1960 or -61...The Rocket Sage was a lucid technical writer, but, sad to say, no sci-fi author. The "Technical" in the title, i.e. the technical sketching of rockets, spaceships and flight trajectories, was, however, published in the early fifties, first by Heinz Gartmann in the then Federal Republic of Germany, soon after by the University of Illinois press in the US. The monster three-stager Shuttle, the gargantuan Mars Space Ships were all figuring in the background of the classical Collier's article and book series, and along with plans for rocket ships to the Moon they entered the iconography of the Space Buffs of the Fifties. Much of the awe and wonder that we felt was, of course, generated by the artists, Chesley Bonestell, Fred Freeman, Rolf Klep, but the mastermind behind those icons was always von Brauns. Today von Braun's book is a timepiece, harking back to those bygone ages, when Mars could be seen as the abode of older and wiser men, in the tradition of Percival Lowell, and when giant rocketships would be developed and used for manned exploration of space without all the political infighting and pork barreling which has characterized the actual practice. Would that something of all that was real, but we can always dream ourselves, as we read on. And the images of the rocketships have been enduring standards by which later plans and projects have been measured.It's a tale of one man's dream, of the Conquest of Space, that never was, and a flight to a planet Mars which was dated as von Braun was writing. And it is a tale, that bring us latter day armchair astronauts a bit nearer to the minds of those, who not only dreamed, but in the words of Lawrence of Arabia "act out their dreams when awake".

Werner Von Braun is the technical heavyweight behind Germany's WW-II V-2 rocket program. He was arrested by the Gestapo for focusing on manned spaceflight rather than vengence weapons. His tale of coming to America with his team is well known. Project Mars is an interesting science fiction story. Written by Von Braun in German in 1950, while he was at Fort Bliss, Texas for the Army, it tells the tale of a manned Mars expedition. Interestingly, it is one of the few science fiction novels I have read with a 65 page technical appendix of equations. It mentions the books that Von Braun was influenced by, chiefly Verne. This shows what Von Braun was thinking in the 1930's and 1940's, but couldn't share before coming to America. A must read for those involved or interested in space exploration.

Jack Turner has yet again produced a book with a sense of place and sometimes even an aura of the Tetons where he has climbed and guided for 40 years. Although this book is more relaxed and less intense than his powerful "Abstract Wild" it nevertheless provides a mature outlook on life in the Tetons. Turner is not afraid to reveal himself in this book and yet does not fall into sentimentality, the accounts of climbing and the experiences with friends are especially moving such as the tragic consequences of a fall for his friend Kim Schmitz who suffered in incredible agony after breaking just about everything or the death of Leigh Ortenburger, and yet there are great times too like the remarkable skiing of Mark Newcombe and Turner's love of Rilke and Haiku which also appeals very much to me. Surrounding these images of lost friends and at times extreme experiences is the national park itself which never leaves the scene always providing the glue which binds the whole together. Turner has a remarkable grasp of both the scientific aspects of the park such as the geology and the biology/ecology which is added to the feel of it at the same time, I mean the sense of being experienced when the mind is stilled, something which is always enhanced in a wild area where existence is forced upon you no longer escapable such as in a big city. Through the stories of the park, the people and his own very human outlook you can't help but feel Turner loves where he is and lives for it wholeheartedly, his own journey into philosophy, Zen show how deeply he thinks about his life and the natural environment. I also feel that he loves what he does and where he is so much that he not willing to give it up to go that extra distance needed in really deep meditation. My own experiences in this mean that joy can be found everywhere whether it is a city or in natural surroundings. Jack Turner is a man that I would like to meet, his energy, his dynamic outlook, his interest in just about everything is not that common nowadays. A wonderful book of a man and his love.

This beautifully crafted narrative presents a month-by-month, May through April, description of a 58 year old mountain climbing guide's recollections and reflections on living and working Grand Teton National park. Teewinot is the nearest peak visible from the author's seasonal cabin in the park.Each chapter is an essay about climbing, wildlife, plants, environmental management or personality profiles related to events that happened during that month. The book begins in May because that's when spring begins to overtake winter, covers the intense summer climbing season, describes autumn wildlife viewing treks to remote corners of the park and tells about winter ski treks. The lifestyle and habits of climbing guides, rangers and other professional outdoors people are profiled throughout.One of the best aspects of the book is that while it's written by a technical climbing guide and has interesting stories about both guided and highly challenging climbs, the book goes beyond that to reflect the author's wide-ranging, eclectic interest and knowledge about everything related to the Tetons.Highly recommended to anyone interested in mountaineering, national parks, wildlife and the contemporary American West. There are 11 unexceptional color photographs, two maps with sufficient detail to follow the ground covered in the essays, and a six-page bibliography of reference sources for the Tetons and other topics covered, although many books cited are probably available only in large reference libraries.

As a lover of the Grand Tetons I couldnt wait to read a book written by a guide who has spent much of his life in the Teton range. Jack Turner has guided many clients to the Grand Teton summit as well as climbed a majority of other peaks in the Teton range. If you are expecting a spell binding thriller about mountain climbing, you will be dissapointed. However, if you want to get a feel for the experience of simply being in the Teton range during the 4 seasons, then this book is for you. Turner's knowledge of wildlife and plantlife in the Teton range is amazing, as is his ability to describe the ever changing seasons in the mountains. His Zen religious influences are also referenced but never heavy handed as he manages to weave the Zen philosophy with the seasons and changing climate. Turner does get to be a bit preachy on the subject of man encroaching upon natural habitats and the destruction of our wild eco system; but his love for the natural beauty of the Tetons allowed me to forgive this minor annoyance. Turner takes us through the seasons of the Teton range in a smooth flowing narrative that is satisfying and enlightening. I would recommend this book for those who enjoy the Tetons as well as others who are simply interested in one person's perception of one of our finest wildlife areas.

As I read, Turner took me on an alpine guided trip that allowed me to vicariously absorb the intimacies of nature and "sit" with him as he basked, observed and recorded the essence of nature and the Tetons. I felt like I was with him for every step and hold. This is a very sensual account of his year in the Tetons. The intimacies of his account are to be relished. He was generous to share his otherworldly view and "heightened" sense of what it is like to humbly share the earth with other beings.

This must be the best introductory book I could offer students to Western philosophy with, and I have read far too many of them. Warburton manages to grab some of the best insights of great philosophers, and bring them to the bloodflow of any intellectually curious reader outside of the narrow confines of contemporary philosophy. Very easy to read, and this covers quite a bit while managing to include a few people who are often unfortunately left out--especially Schopenhauer. People will nitpick on what is in and out of this, but we do get so much for under 300 pages and less than $15. I have fallen in love with this little book, and now I have to hurry up and find a way to include it in my classes. The Audible version (I bought both) made for a good road trip, too!

The author sets himself a major task: to explain briefly and clearly but not superficially some of the ideas of several prominent names in the history of western philosophy. Of course, one could always quibble about the authors he selects as well as those he omits. But he does identify least some of the important ideas of the ones he selects. In a book this short with so many authors covered, one cannot expect too much. It's enough if he gets the reader to look in more depth at original sources and learned commentary on these. And I think many readers will do just that. So as a first book on the subject, it's fine. But let no one come away from this book thinking that they really have a good understanding of the history of philosophy. For this, F. Copleston is better.

This book serves its purpose of summarizing the history of philosophy following the history of philosophers in an accessible language. Often after listening to each chapter (yes, I've "read" the audiobook version) I was much more curious about the work of the philosopher than what 9 or 10 minutes of narration was capable of covering. I ended up spending time reading stuff in Wikipedia as much as listening to the audiobook. I recommend this title for those seeking a basic introduction to philosophy or for those interesting to revisiting philosophical concepts learned at school.

It is a "little" history in that it greatly reduces the enquiry of some of the greatest philosophers who ever lived, but I guess it's only meant to whet your appetite for more. Accessible to middle schoolers with support and discussion.

I love this book. It's fascinating... before talking about their ideas, the author shares interesting details about what the philosophers were like as people: how they lived, what inspired them, and sometimes how they thought about each others' work. The narratives are fun and memorable, and really help frame philosophy not as an abstract academic subject but more as a practical effort by real human beings to make sense of the big questions we all wrestle with in life. I hope Nigel Warburton makes more of these books. A Little History of Philosophy offers a friendly overview of some big ideas in Western philosophy, and I'd love to read his take on some of the great Eastern philosophers' lives and ideas.

I have never read a book written by Nigel Warburton, so I had not known what to expect. But, this book is a great journey through the history of philosophy. The author describes philosophers and their thoughts in a chronological way, so you can see how the world was changing in the past. In this way, you can easily grasp their ideas. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn more about great philosophers, their methods and how they had lived.

I bought this for my 12 yr old daughter for xmas after she had expressed an interest in reading about philosophy. My husband decided to take a peek and COULD NOT put it down until he finished. He LOVED this book - I'm telling you he RAVED about it (he reads quite a bit). He is excited to get others in this series that cover topics of history/etc. I read just the first chapter myself and throughout it was quite well done. I'm not sure yet if it will click for my 12 yr old. It's certainly not out of reach for that age group, but we'll see. I"ll try to remember to post an update when she picks it up.

My girls have recently gotten into Minecraft on their iPad Minis and have been completely obsessed. They want to play all the time. Most of the time they are just messing around on it. We asked them if they would be interested in some books about Minecraft and they jumped at the chance. We purchased the Minecraft Essential Handbook and the Minecraft Construction Handbook for them and they loved them. They share the books back and forth and flip through them to get ideas for building things. They are using the iPad Pocket Edition that doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the PC version has, but these books are still good for general guidance and ideas. They are great beginner books to get them thinking about other things they can create. There are three other official books and a compilation of all of them if you want even more. If you have a beginner at Minecraft, these books are worth a look.

I bought this for my 10 yr old son who is a minecraft building fanatic. He plays on xbox 360 and the creative mode, so he was more interested in how to build unique structures than in how to survive. I checked this book out at the local bookstore that was selling it for 7.99 just to see what it all encompassed and it seemed like it would be informative and that he'd like it...but I purchased it for him for Christmas on Amazon...can't beat that Prime!Verdict: He LOVES it! It's helped him build different unique structures, a huge Golden Gate Bridge style structure and several other buildings...He loved it so much he was bugging me to get the Redstone book....which I'll review shortly! He also liked the hardback version- they sell them on Scholastic books through his school, but only the softbacking- and since he uses it so much, he prefers the sturdiness of hardback.

My nine-year-old grandson loved this so much. I had to buy him another one in the series. He actually read the whole book to his cousin (age five.) I highly recommend these books because the kids absolutely read and then use them as a reference.

This was purchased for a 7 year old that loves Minecraft. It is a great reference while playing the game. Definitely a must for Minecraft kid. This was a Christmas present. Gorgeous book series. not TOO pricey. Awesome for the diehard fan. Awesome if you need a great novelty gift for grownups and kids alike. I'm buying every one as they are published for my young crafter (11 years old). NOT really any SECRET INFORMATION... just a really great way to present it in a fabulous little book! That is also a series that would be a nice set someday!

I got this for my son and he loves reading them for hints and ideas. H is big into Minecraft and these were a hit. I am not so much into this but he tells me this book is awesome!

My 6 year old reads these with great interest. He has the whole collection but he is a genius so I would recommend finding one at library first to see if your kid is into it before buying. Bought these for my 8 year old because she likes to play Minecraft. Nothing in here you can't find on the internet but I thought this would encourage more reading since its a subject she likes. She reads these books (we have the whole set) almost daily. These are great in that aspect. They are hardcover and actually well made for the price. I'm fully satisfied.
