Review

“A memoir that resonates with unflinching candor and ironic wit, Wasted is a book that can save lives. The courage that prompted it awes me. Yes, this one is not to be missed.” (Dorothy Allison)“A scary but tentatively triumphant memoir....[Told] with grace, sharp humor and candor.” (San Francisco Chronicle)“Her book will be value not only to fellow sufferers: Any woman who has ever been made gleeful by the diminishing of her physical self will gain from reading this painful and sharp-boned account. ” (Newsday)“Hornbacher writes like an artist, shaping her themes without self-pity or self-importance, wondering with intelligence why the dissatisfaction everyone feels with life is so often blamed on the female body.” (Village Voice)“Powerful, compelling, intelligent....A memoir that has the tension and movement of a well-paced novel. You simply cannot put Wasted down.” (San Diego Union Tribune)“Startlingly frank, breathtakingly emotive.” (Elle)“Stunning...A tortured-yet-compelling account of a life spent bingeing, purging, and starving...A primal scream of a story sure to resonate even with those who possess a healthy attitude toward food and weight.” (Glamour)“Stunning..a tortured-yet-compelling account of a life spent bingeing, purging, and starving..A primal scream of a story sure to resonate even with those who possess a healthy attitude toward food and weight.” (Glamour)“This is a terrifically well-written book, completely devoid of self-pity.” (Entertainment Weekly)“An unsparing, terrifying, razor-edged self-portrait that cuts right into the heart of this most paradoxical of psychological disorders.” (Patricia Chao)

Marya Hornbacher was severely anorexic and bulimic from the age of nine into her college years. In this memoir she attempts to explain the experience of having an eating disorder. The picture is grim. Hornbacher cannot locate a single cause for her eating disorder. Certainly there are plenty of the regularly-accepted influences: a family that's weird about food, a society in which women are rewarded for being quiet and skinny, and so on. While living at boarding school Hornbacher was surrounded by girls with eating disorders, hers, too, was already formed. By the time she was in college Hornbacher was nearly dead. The portrait of eating disorders that emerges from this memoir is complex and frightening. There are no simple causes and no simple answers. It is scary how easy it is for Hornbacher, as a desperately ill girl, to fall under the radar of anyone's ability to help, even parents and doctors. Hornbacher's analysis of her disease is thoughtful. She makes interesting points, and argues that anorexia in not, necessarily, an effort to remain a child. Light reading this is not, but essential for those who would like to understand more about eating disorders.

I am a former bulimic/anorexic. Having said that, I am sure I am not alone in the reality that we who have had this disorder read many accounts of others with the disorder. This one is the least romanticized or glorified or even blame filled. Marya tells the story in all its gore and bitterness. There are no frills no one finishing this book would want to attempt to go down the slippers slope of screwing around with your diet or health. I had never read or been able to describe the "cold" you physically feel as an anorexic. Marya does it so eloquently it put me back to 89 pounds and constantly freezing, even in the winter. The description of the terror of your hair falling out. The description of the terror of little by little killing yourself and the madness of not being able to stop and almost feeling powerful in doing so. Anyone who seeks to see inside the mind of the disorder -or who has been through it and wants to know they weren't the only ones who did some crazy stuff, should read.

Hands down the best book about eating disorders. I have had this in hard copy since I was 16. Highly recommended if you are dealing with an eating disorder, or if you know someone who has one and are trying to understand what they're going though.

Marya definitely isn't shy. She's very honest, I will tell you that if you do have that mindset, it can trigger, I haven't been in Marya's hell in the same way, but I do understand some of what she describes, and it's not easy by any stretch. It's a very raw memoir, and it really gives great insight into the family element, If you want an insightful look into this world, take a gander, but read at your own risk

There were a lot of things that didn't apply to me (bulimia), but the ones that did..she had taken everything I wish that I could articulate and said them for me. So much of our pasts the same, and especially the ego vs. self torture realization. I highlighted every part that I feel is true about myself, to help my husband and therapist understand my experience with this illness so they know how to better help me. Amazing and real depiction.

This is one of my all-time favorite authors, and I think this is my favorite book of hers (it's hard to say because her other stuff is also just amazing). I actually own a few copies because I give them out a lot. I literally binged the whole book in a night.

I don't typically read books like this and do not have much expereince on the subject of mental health. I learned a lot from this book and about the some of the realities about these mental diseases that we never really think about and I think is often misunderstood in society.A beautifully written book about some of the realities of mental health.

great book. for someone who can relate, this is definitely a great read. i would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about what its like to live with this illness or someone who does live with this illness and has since overcome it. Being someone who struggles with ED for over ten years, it almost serves as a how to guide. Some of the things she references I almost wanted to engage in myself. So if you are not in control of your ED, it may be in your best interest to put it down until you are. This book is in no way disguised, it is the realest explanation of feelings and emotions that some with an ED deals with. But I still stick with my original statement that this book is great, one of the best I've read.
