Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel -- Why Everything You Know is Wrong, by John Stossel

From Publishers Weekly

ABC News correspondent Stossel mines his 20/20 segments for often engaging, frequently tendentious challenges to conventional wisdom, presenting a series of "myths" and then deploying an investigative journalism shovel to unearth "truth." This results in snappy debunkings of alarmism, witch-hunts, satanic ritual abuse prosecutions and marketing hokum like the irradiated-foods panic, homeopathic medicine and the notion that bottled water beats tap. Stossel's libertarian convictions make him particularly fond of exposés of government waste and regulatory fiascoes, which are usually effective but lead inexorably to blanket denunciations of "monster government" and sermons on the wisdom of the market. Sloganeering—"Myth: The EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) will make America less sexist. Truth: The EEOC will torment people and enrich lawyers"—sometimes crowds out objectivity. The author's complacent glosses on overpopulation and global warming ("we can build dykes and move back from the coasts") are especially glib and one-sided. Fans of Stossel's similarly opinionated bestseller Give Me a Break will eat up this new book, but other readers may wince when the author's ideology overshadows the facts. From Booklist

Investigative reporter for ABC's 20/20, Stossel is well known for his impatient "Give Me a Break" reports uncovering wrongdoing. With a writing style that is similar to his television personality--lots of questions and exclamatory statements--Stossel debunks several popular misconceptions from media bias to world overpopulation. In separate chapters, he turns an investigative eye toward the media, business, government, education, the sexes, consumers, law, experts on everything, religion, health, parenting, and the pursuit of happiness. In the business section, he takes a generally pro-business position, attacking myths regarding the notion that big business is anti-consumer and exploits workers. He counterbalances by examining the myth that American business believes in free markets. The Truth: most businesspeople don't care about free markets, and will stifle competition if it serves their interest. Regarding government, Stossel attempts to strike a similar balance, attacking the myths that Republicans shrink government and that government helps the needy. Stossel tackles more mundane subjects in the health section, exploding myths that being cold gives you a cold and chocolate is bad for you. Each debunking is backed up with research and interviews. He concludes with a chapter that acknowledges readers' natural curiosity about where he stands politically with a myth-buster about himself: Myth: John Stossel is a conservative. Truth: he's a classical liberal. For fans of Stossel and readers who appreciate pokes at conventional wisdom. Vanessa BushCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This (and his other book "Give me a break") are the ultimate examples of good "common sense". My favorite one of his, is that the law should be legislated to where if one loses a lawsuit, then the loser has to pay. He's also got a newer book which I haven't read: "No they can't: Why government fails - but individuals succeed".

Years ago, I owned this book and print. I loved it. So much so, that I decided to buy it again when I purchased a Kindle. I liked Stossel's fact-based look at many things that we hold true---that may not be as true as they appear. What I didn't like? Some odd formatting that caused weird paragraph indentations in some places. Still, this is a fine book that's well worth reading.

I actually bought the book for my husband at his request. He loved the book and read it in a matter of days. While he was reading it I picked it up a couple of times and read a few Myths and was stimulated for more. When my husband was finished he placed it on my chair. This book is an eye opener for me. It is well written, easy to read, humorous but informational all at the same time.It leaves me to feel that I need to do something to change things/make things right. I don't know what that is yet, but one thing is for sure I am going to tell all my family and friends to read the book.

I enjoyed reading this book, it does give some good information on these items that he writes about. It does have one problem and that is that some of the information is dated. Otherwise it is a good read, Stossel is a good writer and communicator. He makes things entertaining as well as informative.

You have to take Stossel with a grain of salt. Having said that, this is a great book for the pragmatist who wants to read the "other side" of things that everybody else wants to put blinders on to. I highly recommend; it really is thought provoking.

With clarity and precision of thought Mr. Stossel has demonstrated the genetic defects existing in many humans. Multi-level marketers, get rich quick schemers (without working hard), hucksters, con-people, politicians, late night info commercial people, and many others may have used these genetic defects to make money, gain power, or accumulate fame. What are the defects? Gullibility, naivety, dishonesty, personal greed (something for nothing), blind loyalty to a cause or person, hunger for power, laziness, and more.Mr. Stossel gives good critical thinking advice to his "students". It is a great book for the young but others can always use a bit of practice when it comes to critical thinking skills. Learning to see through the "words" of politicians, salespeople, advertising messages, and much more is a really good idea! Here are some of the tips that will inoculate you against con artists and others that want to use you and/or take your money:* Listen to what people say but watch what they do* You are not going to get something for nothing* It is OK to dream but wakeup before you commit* When someone speaks in vague generalities or just "generally disagrees" with you, ask for a specific example of where they disagree or where you are wrong. If they can't come up with a specific example or incorrect assertion you made, get out the shovel!* Don't "buy" one side of any story before you evaluate the other side of the story* Don't "buy" one side of the story forever! Keep evaluating! What is true today may not be true tomorrow.* There are often hidden reasons for actions others take, appraise their intentionsThere is much more of value in the book. It is the kind of book you can read in short sessions of 10 to 20 minutes while you commute to work on mass transit or perhaps a washroom reader. Mr. Stossel breaks it up into short readable sections.I must address some of the reader reviews of this book. Some reviewers gave the book a dreadful review. These reviewers resort to name calling and accuse the author of lying and spreading propaganda. These accusers are demonstrating one of the human defects, blind loyalty to a cause or even dishonesty. I wish they would come up with a few examples of incorrect information or propaganda. I don't think they can! I read the entire book and can not find any misinformation in this work. Perhaps, these reviewers are doing what they accuse Mr. Stossel of doing. Now, off you go and good luck in your future.

The favorite chapter is the one titled The Pursuit of Happiness, which everyone should read.

I like Stossel
