Cukor was one of the top directors of Hollywood's studio era, and was known as the "women's director" for consistently drawing fine performances from his leading ladies. For as significant a figure as Cukor, however, there is little available information aside from a handful of critical studies of his films and a series of interviews conducted by Gavin Lambert, On Cukor ( LJ 9/1/72). This is the first full-fledged biography, and it is a good one. McGilligan ( Robert Altman: Jumping off the Cliff , LJ 5/1/89) researched archival materials and interviewed scores of backstage voices to fashion a compelling portrait of a homosexual artist working in a time and a community wherein discretion regarding one's sexual orientation was necessary. McGilligan places the open secret of this "double life" at the heart of Cukor's life and work. This was an interesting book about a very interesting man. Unfortunately, it makes lots of unsubstantiated innuendos about all of the male and female stars/acts in Hollywood during this time, i.e., if all of them were gay as this author says, then no one would have had any children during that time. Of course, all of these innuendos are made about people who are long dead and cannot correct or confirm these assumptions and definitely cannot defend themselves about any accusations made. One BIG problem I found was in the filmography at the end of the book. One of Cukor's best and well known films from 1939, The Women, does not give a credit to its number one star, Norma Shearer, without whom this film would never have been made. Since this is one of my all time favorite films (which I have seen over 20 times), I re-read the credits several times and there is absolutely no mention of Norma Shearer or credit given to her as an actress in the film. I suggest the author get this corrected in future printings and in the Kindle version. This is not the first book by Mr. McGilligan that I have read and I have found similar errors or omissions in some of his other books also. But George Cukor is an interesting, talented and colorful character who contributed a great deal to the golden age of Hollywood.
Well-written and very informative book. Plus the reader learns about many of Cukor's friends and acquaintances as well as the execution of his movies and scripts. Serious movie fans and those of Hollywood history will not be disappointed.
George Cukor (1899-1983) grew up in a lawyer's middle classand cosy home in New York. Cukor's family heritage was Hungarian and Jewish (Cukor was a secular Jew). All of his life Cukorfought an inferiority complex based on his ugliness, weight andlife in Anti-Semetic America. His biggest secret was his overtand active homosexuality. Among the major directors of the glory years of Hollywood he was the only one who was gay. Cukor directed several blockbusters such as The Philadelphia Story; Adam's Rib; Pat and Mike' The Women; Camille; Born Yesterday Holiday and My Fair Lady (for which he won his onlyOscar for best director) This book contains a complete Filmography of Cukor's oeuvre as well as several vintage photographs. Cukor was a kind man who could show his temper. His famedHollywood parties drew the likes of Garbo, Kate Hepburn, SpencerTracy (who lived in a home on Cukor's estate); Vivien Leigh;Laurence Olivier; Humphrey Bogart and a large contingent of hisgay friends and lovers. Cukor was a man of wit, intelligence,culture and artistic proclivity. The best chapters deal with his complex relationship with David O. Selznick who fired Cukor as director of Gone With theWind. Another intriguing chapter deals with the disaster thanwas A Star is Born the comeback vehicle for the tortured Judy Garland. Cukorwas the director of Marilyn Monroe's last film Something's Got toGive until she was fired for failing to show up on time. Cukorwas kind to her. The book is a typical Hollywood biography where the films andthe backstage life of the personality are discussed in length.Many readers might find this dull. For the classic movie buff,however, this McGilligan biography is well researched and written.

When I was twelve I discovered the biography section of my local library, specifically the biographies of screen stars from the past. I remember Lauren Bacall’s BY MYSELF and of course MOMMIE DEAREST, as well as Shelley Winters’ and her two scandalous tell-all’s. When I found the Cukor bio at The Strand this Spring I was excited even though it’s now 20 years old. McGilligan does a great job exploring the “double life,†Cukor’s artistic outpouring and his reputation as a homosexual in Hollywood, with his Sunday night parties full of fresh-face just-off-the-bus actors. McGilligan traces Cukor from his birth in 1899 to his last picture he directed, 1981’s RICH AND FAMOUS, a long-lasting legacy that connects Ethel Barrymore to Candace Bergan. All of Cukor’s films are explored, including THE PHILADEPHIA STORY, LITTLE WOMEN, THE ROYAL FAMILY, A STAR IS BORN and his ill-fated collaboration with David O. Selznick on GONE WITH THE WIND. Cukor’s time in Hollywood is presented with the backdrop of history, whether it was his unpleasant experiences during WWII to friends lost during the Blacklist, as well as the changing of norms in the 1960s and the dissolution of the studio system, culminating with his Best Director Oscar for MY FAIR LADY in 1964. McGilligan, who was even able to get Cukor’s best pal and sometimes muse Kate Hepburn on record, has written a comprehensive and entertaining biography of “the gentleman director.â€
