The book discussion group met in March 2017 to enthusiastically discuss this. Wow, we loved this book. Most of us had seen the movie at some point in the past (and a few of us had seen the Oprah-produced Broadway musical), but it turns out this is a favorite book of a few members of the group and everybody liked it lot. We rarely get this kind of universal praise for a book, so you know that if you didn't read it for group, you should still definitely put it on your list of books to read. Most of us agreed that the language is tough and off-putting for the first few letters, but you both get used to the odd spellings and grammar and also the writing gets better at Celie writes more. After eight or ten letters, it all seems pretty normal. The violence and cruelty is also tough and off-putting in the first part of the book but again, it gets less violent and you get used to it (what a horrifying thought!) as the novel continues. The words that readers used to describe the events and language in the novel are "epic," "biblical," "powerful," and finally "beautiful."The story seems huge and the family tree is complicated with parents, step-parents, unacknowledged parents, forced marriages, lovers and mistresses, as well as two dead unnamed mothers. But the major characters are clearly defined and change during the novel and, unlike many novels, the changes are clearly explained and well motivated by events in the novel.Celie is so desperate to be loved that she loves everyone else without thinking of herself. The men are largely evil (this is probably a valid criticism of the novel) who are forced to learn and change by the strong and far more admirable women who shape them.We enjoyed discussing butch and femme women (as well as the stupidly masculine men as compared to the loving and generous men), the open lesbianism, and the alternate Christian theology presented largely by the openly sexual Shug.I thought that the African letters from Nettie were a bit dry and anthropological compared to Celie's personal and emotive letters. And a few of the readers thought that the ending was perhaps too happy with everyone turning out to be a better, more evolved character. But these are quibbles compared to the well-drawn characters, the wide scope, the emotional fulfillment, and the positive changes that most of the characters undergo.

The novel, The Color Purple, is about the main character, Celie, and her sister Nettie. Some other characters are Celie and Nettie’s stepfather, Celie’s husband, and Celie’s lover, Shug. It uses detailed imagery to paint a picture of all of the characters, their physical and emotional attributes. The main theme throughout the novel is how people of certain races and genders are mistreated throughout the era of the 1940s. The main character, Celie, is abused by her stepfather, verbally and physically. It shows her struggle from being stuck in his clutches, to becoming her own person, and earning her independence. She discovers things about herself, and discovers things about other people, and what they mean to her in certain aspects of her life. My favorite character was Celie, this is because the reader can see the progress she makes over the course of the book, and I think the strength that she finds within herself is inspiring and encouraging. I relate to Celie, and all the other characters in the book that have been mistreated, or abused. This is because I empathize for them, and I have had friends that have been mistreated, and I understand how it affects a person's well being, and besides that, their self esteem. I loved the book, I loved the type of insight it gave into an aspect of life that no other author really covers. My favorite part of this book was the part where Celie begins to realize that she is worth more than what she is being given. Through the support of her lover, Shug, she gains self-confidence and realizes that she did not deserve the horrible treatment that she received throughout her entire life. She had to withstand being molested by her step-father, basically being held captive by him, and then in a sense, he “sold” her to the man he thought would need her housekeeping skills the most. She constantly had to go through only being thought of as a piece of meat, and property, almost the maid of every house she walked into. The only thing I would change about this book would be the beginning of the exchange of letters between Nettie and Celie, the first section where it is just about 20 pages of Nettie’s letters to Celie are a bit hard to grasp and get interested in enough to get through that section. Although I am happy I did, because past that, the book was amazing! I read about what was happening in the African village that nettie was in, but also got to see what was happening in Celie’s life. I would definitely recommend this book to any of my friends, it has a great insight on the lives of black women in the 1940s, and unique.

Review

“Easy, smart, and fun to read." –Men's Journal "With this book in hand, your 12 bottles will provide at least a year’s worth of excellent drinks, both classic and modern.” –Wall Street Journal“It's the bane of the home mixologist -- complicated cocktail recipes that call for multiple (and often pricey) esoteric liquors doomed to be used once, then linger for years at the back of the cabinet. Convinced there had to be a better way to stock a bar, Lesley Jacobs Solmonson and husband David Solmonson set out to cull the cocktail herd and home in on only the most essential ingredients for great drinking.” – J.M. Hirsch, Associated Press “Starting a home bar from scratch can be daunting and expensive… With the right selection, you can keep your stash simple and still be able to make just about every cocktail you could imagine.” – Brooklynmagazine “Make enough cocktails to last you a lifetime. Limited to only seven spirits, one liqueur, two vermouths and two styles of bitters, you will indeed have a collection that in many ways will exceed most typical bars around the country.” – Good Spirits News “Here’s to smart barkeeping: Make hundreds of cocktails from a mere dozen bottles.” – Cooking Light “A great home bar is an abridged one… The 12 Bottle Bar offers tips on stocking enough liquor to keep your cocktail list large but your investment small.” – Los Angeles magazine “An innovative idea.” –Town & Country “Covers the bases of modern cocktail making thoroughly.” – Kindred Cocktails “Maximum cocktail potential from just a few bottles.” – Liquor.com “The perfect precursor to a establishing a successful home or café beverage program.” – Fresh Cup “How many cocktails could you make using just 12 bottles without sacrificing flavor, technique, or creativity? The answer: enough to give your local molecular mixologist a run for his money.” – Publishers Weekly (AP)

I like the idea of setting up a bar with a specific set of liquors and having a bunch of really good drinks you can build a real repertoire from. The drinks are chosen carefully and each has its bit of trivia attached so you can come off sounding much smarter than you are. Bonus points for smaller bottle sets that can get you started at a lower price and/or smaller bar space because the small sets can also function for picnics and the like. Excellent book for novices as well as for pros looking to shake up their routine.

This is a great book for not only someone that wants to start a home bar but for someone that wants to learn a bit of history, many recipes (as well as versions of) and tips/tricks of the trade. This book is written very well, enjoyable to read and full of all kinds of information.I have always enjoyed a good cocktail, but they always seem to be shrouded in some secret bar tenders socity that makes it impossible to recreate at home. This unlocks the secrets and makes it easy and practical to do at home!!Congrats and thanks.

As someone getting into cocktail making and mixology, this was a perfect beginner book. The "12 bottle" part is a little bit deceiving because sometimes it calls for funky ingredients but I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to make cocktails. It also includes a walk-through of the different classes of cocktails (sours, old fashioneds, slings, etc) and the history behind each recipe.

An almost perfect home bar book! I especially am glad he included Genever as one of those bottles and left out Tequila. My only complaint, and it isn't really one, is there is quite a few smaller bottles (bitters, etc) needed for the cocktails, but his choices for the basic dozen are spot on. It's a book for grownups!

On the one hand, this is an excellent collection of relatively simple drinks. On the other hand, you can't just use the 12 Bottles and be done with the entire thing. You gotta make all these weird syrups and mixes

Bought this book as a gift but I had a chance to look through it. Great little beginning guide to building a home bar around 12 basic bottles with some good cocktail recipes. Will definitely come in handy.

Great book I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to start a nice home bar and the fact that they give different options from basic to top shelf. The plethora of recipes in each spirit category helps to keep things from getting confusing.

I really enjoyed the history of the different spirits and drinks, and it's a great resource on homemade mixers, syrups, and cordials. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who's looking for a strictly recipe book because the organization and variety of drinks in the book leave something to be desired.I'm also not a fan of the section on Genever, it just strikes me as pretentious (ooh look at this alcohol you've never heard of!).

Amazing! Everything about this book is awesome from the recipes to the presentation!! A must for any home or professional bartender. As a restaurant manager and Sommelier I make all my bar staff read it!!

Coming from a hospitality background I've grown tired of the classic espresso martini, nothing wrong with it but there are so many amazing things you can do with coffee and liquor. Jason (author of the book) has taken this to the next level with so many amazing cocktails, this book belongs behind every bar that takes themselves seriously... love it.

This is a tough book to review, mostly because it's hard to say exactly who the intended audience is (was). Superficially it looks like many other "dinosaur books" that middle school students would enjoy but when one sits down and actually goes through it, studying the layout, reading the narrative, studying the diagrams, it seems to be written for a much more sophisticated audience. It's true, that for experts in this field, there might not be much new, but I don't think that was the purpose. This is a field guide as much as anything else.Other reviewers were disappointed in the number of "gray silhouettes" and the relative paucity of artistic renderings in color. Considering how little we actually know about dinosaur skin the authors' decision to go with what they did is probably appropriate. In fact, there is more color in the book than some reviewers apparently seem to realize. But if you are buying the book thinking that it will look like the cover, you will be sorely disappointed. This book is not the end-all and be-all of books on dinosaurs but it brings together in one book all (?) the dinosaurs that have been discovered and named. It brings me up to date. Now when a new dinosaur is discovered or named, I can update this field guide with a 3 x 5-inch index card in the right location.

First and foremost, this book provides one of the most accessible surveys of contemporary knowledge about dinosaurs available today. Despite a primary focus on dinosaurs, the book includes also a small (yet healthy) amount of information about the other animals that shared the Earth with them during the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Pim even makes sure to include historical information about important paleontologists and how they influenced the field. Each dinosaur covered is chronologically organized by the geologic period that best defines it. This gives the reader the advantage of easily constructing a mental profile of the herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore dinosaur species that exploited various parts of the same environment. Furthermore, the text for some animals makes it a point to refer to related species covered earlier in the text, which is especially useful for understanding species that span multiple geological periods. The text is not overly technical, and the illustrations are well done. While some of the species are disappointingly rendered only as silhouettes, I sincerely believe that the overall quality of artwork somewhat makes up for it.Beyond the quality of the text, the next most important issue to consider when purchasing this book is the format. While I own the Kindle version, I have spent some time with the print version. For adults, I think either version of the text works well. The Kindle version is convenient (which works better for me), but the illustrations still look better in print. With that said, and since the non-technical nature of the text makes this work rather accessible, younger readers may like the print version best. Due to it's lexile level, this is not a text that I would give a child under the age of 12 unless you intend to read the book together. While the book has great illustrations, it is not a picture book by any stretch of the imagination.Overall, this is a great choice for anyone who wishes to get current with the state of paleontology and the study of dinosaurs. It's not technical, and it's not exhaustive, but I think most lay readers will find it just right for an introduction.

Good treatment of a topic that has been hashed over a lot. It was nice to have the time frames of the different dino eras put into perspective. It didn't bother me (as it seemed to have bothered some other reviewers) that some dinos had only outlines for representation. Often all that is known about a particular dino is from an incomplete collection of bones, so we can only surmise what the dino actually looked like, thus the outline illustration. There are good illustrations for the dinos whose physiology is known (some are truly scary!). Nice commentaries on the places of discovery, as well with time lines in an easy to read chart format.I would recommend this book to someone who has an interest in dinos, maybe as a hobby. If you have wondered about the dinos and their world together and as separate species, I think this is the book for you. If you want something a little more scientific, then you might have to look elsewhere.

Includes a good amount of information, but only drawings lacking detail. The download version is inexpensive, and now I know why. Compared to other dinosaur books this book is about average, while the digital version contains little detail and is boring to read. There are much better books on dinosaurs on the market, and many of them are less expensive. Try Dougal Dixon's book if you want a visual feast. It doesn't include as much information, but the drawings and maps are well worth it.

This book is amazing!! it has so much awesome information that is presented in a reader friendly way. The book covers over 300 dinosaurs, as well as other well-known creatures that lived with the dinosaurs. This book also covers recent innovations within paleontology itself. The information is very up to date. You could get almost as much entertainment looking at the art as you would reading; the art is spectacular! I am a huge dinosaur and paleontologist enthusiast, and I cannot say enough good things about this book. I bought the paperback copy, and I was very satisfied, I can only imagine how great the hardback would look.

It works as a dinosaur reference, but if you are looking for something a little more in depth, you might consider looking elsewhere. Perhaps you might consider Robert T. Bakker's Dinosaur Heresies or Dinosaur Odyssey. The weren't as many colored pictures as I would have liked, but those that were in the book more than made up for this deficiency. All in all, this is a pretty solid book on those amazing creatures called dinosaurs.

Review

“A faithful translation is rare; a translation which preserves intact the original text is very rare; a perfect translation of Montaigne appears impossible. Yet Donald Frame has realized this feat. One does not seem to be reading a translation, so smooth and easy is the style; at each moment, one seems to be listening to Montaigne himself–the freshness of his ideas, the unexpected choice of words. Frame has kept everything.” –New York Times Book Review

From the Inside Flap

Humanist, skeptic, acute observer of himself and others, Michel de Montaigne (1533-92) was the first to use the term "essay" to refer to the form he pioneered and he has remained one of its most famous practitioners. He reflected on the great themes of existence in his masterly and engaging writings, his subjects ranging from proper conversation and good reading, to the raising of children and the endurance of pain, from solitude, destiny, time and custom, to truth, consciousness, and death. Having stood the test of time, his essays continue to influence writers nearly five hundred years later. Also included in this complete edition of his works are Montaigne's letters and travel journal, fascinating records of the experiences and contemplations that would shape and infuse his essays. Montaigne speaks to us always in a personal voice in which his virtues of tolerance, moderation, and understanding are dazzlingly manifest. Donald M. Frame's masterful translation is widely acknowledged to be the classic English version.

This book exceeded my expectations. The size and quality are excellent for the price. The sewn-in ribbon bookmark adds a touch of old world elegance. The paper used is very thin, but feels nice between your fingers. I read another reviewer who complained about the binding, but my copy seems well made and strong. This is a book I will read gently at home, not throw in a bag or take to the beach, so I expect it to outlast me with no trouble. If you love Montaigne, this is the edition to get. Hope my photos help you decide.

I was suddenly taken with the idea of reading Montaigne. I had purchased Sarah Bakewell's biography of Montaigne and decided to read the man himself. I already owned a copy of the Essays in my venerable old set of the Great Books of the Western World and set about to reading. Very tough going. Then I did some research on the translation I had and found that it was done by and Englishman named Cotton in the late 17th century and the revised in the early 19th century by the famous essayist William Hazlitt. Add to the fact that Montaigne wrote in middle French (16th century) and had a style of writing in which he employed very long sentences. Cotton attempted to do justice to this, but produced a convoluted and difficult to follow translation. I once read Montaigne in the original while taking a French literature class. Even if you are fluent in modern French, middle French is very difficult with archaic verb tenses and vocabulary.I bring all this up because it sent me on a quest for a more modern translation. This one, by Frame, was done in the 1950's, but it is much more readable. There are other modern translations, but this one has gotten the best reviews. There are some academic criticisms of it which I won't go into because they are of academic interest only. Why read Montaigne? He has a surprisingly modern voice. He could have written some of the essays yesterday instead of nearly 500 years ago. He has much to tell us about how to live. He also pretty much invented the essay as a literary form. The essays are refreshing, sometimes humorous, other times very serious, but never boring. They are short. You can read most in a few minutes.Turn of the TV, get off the net and read a book by someone who really has something to say that will, just possibly, change your life.

i'll leave the other reviews to describe the substance of montaigne's book and his unique place in literature -- a favorite read of shakespeare and emerson -- and focus instead on the merits of this edition. this is the single best volume to own if you want to encounter the skeptical and humanist montaigne in english.i am a fluent reader in the middle french of montaigne's text and own the "old" bibliothèque de la pléiade edition of his complete works. i'll say categorically that donald frame's translation is superior both to the older version by charles cotton and william hazlitt (pleasing for its antiquarian savor, but a hard slog for the average reader) and the recent versions by j.m. cohen and m.a. screech (both in paperback from penguin books). frame is much more accurate than all the others at reproducing montaigne's virile, brusque and improvisatory sentence structures, and best captures his lively and pregnant contrasts in the choice of vulgar, colloquial, informal, formal and ironically fussy expressions.all translations (and, in fact, almost all french editions) modernize the text in various ways. translations break up montaigne's longer paragraphs, and use periods to separate the sentences strung together with semicolons, but frame is the least drastic with these and other "modernizing" changes, and best conveys the subtle changes in tempo that are characteristic of montaigne's style.every edition of a "classical" text depends in part on a critical apparatus to clarify the historical period and the author's references to other works. the everyman editions are exemplary in choosing a noted authority to write the general introduction (here, the philosopher stuart hampshire) and in providing a synoptic chronology of the author's life with parallel columns for the literary context and historical events. the translator (frame) has penned a brief introduction explaining the history of the text, which evolved through additions and deletions across three major versions. these changes are indicated by superscript letters (A, B or C) which are essential in any edition of montaigne, as the later changes often take the train of thought into unexpected tangents, personal disclosures, or reconsidered opinions. (these comments apply to the "bordeaux" edition accepted as the definitive french text when frame made his translation, although frame also includes material from the posthumous de gournay edition, an advanced critical decision at the time.)finally, this edition is handsomely yet inexpensively produced with a sewn binding under hard covers in slate blue cloth (a ribbon placeholder is part of the binding), and is printed on creamy, firm paper in an accessibly large type face. you will very likely want montaigne to accompany you across your life and this is an edition that will withstand both time, frequent reading, and your own mark ups and annotations.unfortunately, there is in this edition no index to proper names or topics (unlike the original frame edition published by stanford university press). and this is not truly a *complete* edition of montaigne, as it omits the notations he made to the "ephemerides" of beuther, and the 57 latin and greek quotations that montaigne had engraved on the ceiling beams of his tower library. these classical aphorisms are something like an outline of his personal philosophy -- the single greek word "epekho" or "i suspend my judgment" perhaps summarizes them all. and this edition lacks citations to the original latin, greek and french works quoted inline by montaigne: it is annoying to stumble upon a remarkable quotation from juvenal, seneca, cicero, or plutarch, and not be able to locate the original version. these quibbles aside, this is a beautifully translated and handsomely produced edition of a remarkable and truly stimulating landmark in the genre of biographically informed philosophical essay.i strongly encourage readers who enjoy montaigne to look into sarah bakewell's superb recent biography, "How to Live: A Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer", which is available at amazon and uses the pagination of this everyman edition to reference quotations from montaigne's essays, journal and letters.

This is an excellent translation and I recommend it to anyone wishing to have the complete essays. I also recommend that Montaigne is best understood by reading all of his essays. What makes Montaigne interesting, for me, is the full breadth of his thinking: his good and charming reflections as well as his cracked and contradictory opinions. He then comes to us as an authentic person. I fault this edition because the binding is not sturdy enough to hold so many pages without breaking down during daily use. I would prefer a two-volume set because of this; and I would have paid more for a stronger binding or a larger format that reduced the number of pages.

“It seems like everyone and their mother has been inked. Carol Clerk’s new tome, Vintage Tattoos, The Book of Old-School Skin Art, tracks the evolution of old-school pin-up girl pieces…as well as classic floral, nautical, death memorials and heart designs.” ~Nylon Magazine“We’ve read our fill about tattooed circus acts and indigenous people, but we’ll always make time for the scalawags who revolutionized tattoo art. The best chapters in Carol Clerk’s Vintage Tattoos: The Book of Old-School Skin Art detail the history of nautical and patriotic tattoos and their superstitions.” ~Inked Magazine"The lavishly displayed wealth of brightly colored old-school flash is the heart of Vintage Tattoos, and the main reason you’ll find yourself flipping through it again and again. (Clerk's) ruminations on these designs and their cryptic meanings are enlightening." ~Playboy.com"Vintage Tattoos is as much a tat history for tat lovers as it is for anyone into pop culture and art. Gems of tattoo lore transport us to the traveling circuses of the turn of the century (which kick-started America’s tattoo fascination) and hidden backroom parlors which popped up once state governments started banning tattooing in the 1960s. It’s a history lesson worth its ink." ~ModernTonic.com"Vintage Tattoos...is 256 pages of art and anecdotes. Salty stories of tattoo times when shotguns, not art school degrees, hung on the walls behind the parlor counter. When tattooists traveled with the circus, not metal bands. And when the art went underground because of tattoo bans." ~Needled.com"...an entertaining and informative title that should be in every tattoo enthusiast's book collection." ~Skin Art Magazine“Somehow quaint and sexy at once, this opus of the epidermis will stimulate smiles, winces, and perhaps more.” ~Passport Magazine

Ditto on the favorable reviews -- this gives a great history of influential artists and themes over the years, from early 1800's up through the 1950's. Focused mainly on American artists and old-school themes, but also includes a little on some of the great Brit, Nordic and Japanese artists as well. Nice balance of historic photos, flash and text, and well organized thematically. Very informative for those looking for a bit of background or researching their next ink.

A good mix of well-known and unknown tattoo artists throughout history. Solid blending of flash and narrative, as well.

This book is awesome...plenty of "olde tyme" tattoo flash for reference. People talk about "old school" all the time and don't really know what they're talking about...this book is entirely compiled of the original old school style flash and not awkward modern reinterpretations of it.The drawings contained in this book were created by self-taught untrained artists who only had a limited range of subject matter to emulate and execute. Many of the drawings may seem a bit rough and primitive but remember the art of tattoo has only recently been adopted by the fine arts community and this book represents the traditional artwork of tattooists in the early part of the twentieth century...in it's completely unadulterated form without the self consciousness of modern art. This book is a must for the serious collector or general enthusiast of classical European/American tattoo traditions.

There is no shortage of tattoo books coming out these days.I liked this one because it dealt with old school flash which is my preference.A lot of interesting information and well illustrated.Quite a bit on George Burchett and his work which I found especially good.

I bought this book for a burgeoning Ukrainian tattoo artist in zaporozhye oblast- he really appreciated it!

Got this for my mom!

This is a great book. It's that simple. If you're at all interested in classic or vintage tattoos then let this be your first book on the subject, or if you have other tattoo topic books, then you need to add this to that collection.I was interested in a book on old school or vintage tattoos. My main purpose was to learn a little bit more about Sailor Jerry Collins and his influences. I thought maybe there would be some other interesting tidbits of information on the history of what we now consider "vintage tattoos" and maybe some cool pictures - what I got was an amazing surprise. There is so much fantastic and detailed information - none of it boring. The book takes you on an incredible journey through time, style, artists and even equipment.Even if you don't know how to read, the pictures and old flash of these vintage tattoos are worth the price of admission ... ok, the price of the book, but you get the point.Whether you're looking for tattoo ideas, a tattoo history lesson or want to have a unique perspective on vintage tattoos - this is a must add to your bookshelf.

Very pleased!!

"This is a great book--flawed, impossible, infuriating, and moving . . . but he has accomplished in this extraordinary book something finer than mere polemic. En route to his last painful discovery, Barthes takes the reader on an exquisitely rendered, lyrical journey into the heart of his own life and the medium he came to love, a medium that flirts constantly with the 'intractable reality' of the human condition."--Douglas Davis, Newsweek

I like reading Barthes essays on various aspects of society. This book is a little slow going in the beginning but does get better as it goes. It is not for the reader with a casual interest in photography but for someone who is interested in understanding the deeper issues that lay in photography and what it means to photograph and be photographed.

Camera Lucida provides a moving and insightful tribute to the author's mother. However, to my mind, the thinking about photography is rather less valuable.Barthes begins by announcing that the subject compels him to dispense with the compulsion to theorizing that seems endemic to French academic writing. A promising and welcome beginning. But Theory keeps intruding, in the form of jargon (the distinction between Operator, Spectator and Spectrum, which is pretty much dropped shortly after being introduced), various dichotomies (which tend to be introduced for the primary purpose of being subverted), the generation of paradoxes, and the usual rather melodramatic "last word" concerning the inexpressible, the ineffable, and of course Death. Despite his promise to utilize as data his own personal experience of photographs in order to reach the essence of "Photography" [sic], Barthes never manages to get beyond the framework of "representation", "likeness" and "referent", all concepts (dating back to Barthes' early work in semiology) that tend to obfuscate rather than reveal how photographs present themselves to our minds. For the first thing to notice about a photograph is that it does not provide a "likeness" of a thing but rather the thing itself, the difference being that in the photograph the thing doesn't exist (here, now). In other words, the theoretical apparatus surrounding the concept of representation is inherently inadequate to understand what a photograph is, but Barthes relies on it (even if in a negative mode) from start to finish. Also annoying is the preciosity of the writing (its delight in its look and sound, suggesting an aesthete rather than a thinker), and the (again) characteristic striving for brilliance for its own sake. It's easier to appear brilliant when obfuscating than when enlightening, because philosophical and aesthetic truth is discovered not when we learn something new (via fresh information or neologisms) but rather when we are able to recall something we already know, but for some reason are unable to acknowledge. For these reasons, I find Barthes' reflections on photography to be at times very interesting and subtle but of limited value.

It's a textbook. It did it's job. Nothing to really ride home about.

This book never cease to make me think about the role of pictures and the way it seduces our senses and memory that is difficult to explain by words. A lot of people arguing on the Barthes insistence on the aura of the pictures, though it's remaining true since the early invention of photography. I'm intrigued by this essay and continually fascinated by this search for meaning in the object of picture. Highly recommended!

Nice insights into the meaning and difference of photographs. Barthes covers mainly portraits and doesn't analyze landscape or still life photography. Also, he doesn't make any comparisons with paintings, which would have made it more interesting. His final chapter on photography as DOA is profound.

An interesting book, not something that I would have read had it not been required. Nonetheless Barthes raises many interesting points and I am sure that for someone involved in photography it would be a much more engaging read. Even for me it proved palatable.

Great Quality of Product and Fabulous Service

Interesting but esoteric, not so much about photography as about how to feel about photography or how to understand the word "photograph".
