Not sure where to begin with this book. I love a good health read. And a controversial one tends to peak my interest. This book will no doubt be labeled as controversial by many. There are many people who are defiantly against taking high doses of vitamin d3, which this book proudly supports. That said, the author backs up what he says. Starting with a compelling story of his own journey.The author's tale of healing is astounding. The pain that this man has been through, especially the terrible story about the brown recluse bite is horrifying. The author goes into detail about what seems to be a 15 year or so long journey of recovery, ending with - you guessed it- vitamin d3 as the super hero.The author's journey isn't solely about him. It's also about his patients (he is a doctor). And he goes on to detail stories about their own healing journeys as well. But this book is more than just about stories from him and his patients. There are a lot of studies he cites and he goes into detail about how vitamin d3 treats specific illnesses, such as respiratory, obesity, sleep disorders and more. Some of the stories of results, particularly the obesity ones, from taking vitamin d3 are really amazing. Patients losing hundreds of pounds from just taking the vitamin. Yes, it doesn't sound true, but the author does provide explanations for why this weight loss happens when taking vitamin d.Since reading this, I've been working on upping my vitamin d3 intake, and have noticed some mild results thus far. More and more I've been suffering from chronic congestion, and to my delight it's gotten slightly better the past week as I've been getting more d3. It's probably too early to point to this as the sole reason. But I'm optimistic. I'll return to this review with more of my results after testing this out for a series of weeks/months.Either way, this is a great book, definitely in the top 5 out of the 30 or so books I've read this year. Highly recommend this one as it is incredibly eye-opening and just may change the way you think about healing, and may even change your life.

Dr. Somerville is knowledgeable about his subject and delivers his message with obvious care and passion. There are clear explanations of what he calls "winter syndrome", and how we in our day and times, are all suffering from it. We are all suffering from Vitamin D3 deficiency. You come to understand why and the awful consequences of Vitamin D3 deficiency. But you are also given the science and the path to Optimal levels of Vitamin D3 and its benefits. The style of this book is science meets everyday guy. It is so honest, as Dr. Somerville tells not only his patients' stories but, his own story as well. You get lots of researched information and lots of real people stories. He and his patients all regained better health after a long stretch of ill health and poor quality of life. Each chapter is closed with a useful review. There is the testimony of his life; testimonials from patients, and lots of aha! moments in this book. I'm a believer and I highly recommend this book to you.

Not only do I love Doctor Somerville's personal story of reinventing his life after tragedy struck, but also how he transformed himself into the best kind if Functional Medical Practioner by finding a better, natural cure for himself and his patients. Kudos to him for having the courage to widely publish something that goes against the establishment, but offers hope to millions.There is now hope for so many suffering from sleeplessness, restless leg syndrome, low energy, blood sugar problems, low immunity, snoring and weight gain amongst others.The research, real-life examples and in-depth explanations are impressive enough to inform medical professionals, but written in an easily understandable way for the laymen.I am convinced and already taking Vit D!

The explanations for why this is important are well-researched, clearly organized, and supported by a ton of anecdotal evidence. But, don't think that the book will read like a text book. It won't. Dr. Summerville's words are conversational throughout. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in their health and well-being.

I'm totally sold on it, and want to go and get some supplements so I can get my health to a top-notch level. An excellent book presenting 5 different perspectives. Extremely knowledgeable writers. I needed answers and believe I found one in Oord's essay. The material is difficult both in the reading and comprehension but worth the effort.

An age old conundrum that pesters Christians, either intellectually, emotionally or both, is the question of evil in the moral order and in creation. Not long ago a fresh 199 page manuscript rolled off of the presses at IVP Academic addressing this issue from within the Christian household. “God and the Problem of Evil: Five Views” draws together several philosophical and theological scholars who lay their positions out on the table for all to examine. The book is edited by Chad Meister, author and professor of philosophy and theology at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana, and James K. Drew Jr., author, associate professor of the history of ideas and philosophy and dean of the College at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. The material between the soft covers is not overly academic and is accessible to most adult readers.“God and the Problem of Evil” comes in two parts. In the first section each of the respective positions is put before the reader in detail covering anywhere from nineteen to twenty-four pages per position. In the second section the individual authors interact with and critique the other writers. The strength, or weakness, of this approach (depending on your temperament) is that the exchanges are corralled and congregated into single chapters in the second half of the book and not hotly debated at the end of each position.Phillip Cary, professor of philosophy at Eastern University, presents the classic position that traces its lineage back through thinkers and theologians to Augustine of Hippo. The classic view says that “no evil takes place unless God permits it, and that God has a good reason for permitting evil, which takes the form of a greater good that he uses evil to bring about” (14). Cary masterfully weaves together theology, biblical tragedy, story and liturgy that sweep up the reader into hopeful prayer and prayerful hope.William Lane Craig, Research Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology and Professor of Philosophy at Houston Baptist University, offers a position based on the work of Jesuit theologian Luis de Molina. Craig pulls together the theoretical, missiological, and statistical.William Hasker, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Huntington University, unpacks an open theist stance with regard to evil. Here “the future is known by God as what might happen, and as what will probably happen, but not as what will definitely take place” and so “it is impossible even for God to know with certainty how those creatures will respond; there is a genuine possibility that they will not respond in the way he intended and desired for them to do” (60). Hasker disagrees with the determinism he sees in a specific-benefit theodicy and optimistically represents a general-policy theodicy of God as a risk-taker.Thomas Oord, theologian, philosopher, and scholar of multidisciplinary studies who teaches at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, gives an account of essential kenosis. Under this concept, because God’s nature is “self-giving, others-empowering love” that is “necessarily uncontrolling” then God cannot unilaterally prevent evil (84). In other words, “God’s nature of love makes it impossible for God to withdraw, override, or fail to provide the freedom, agency, or basic existence of others” (85). As Oord works out his theory he makes other interesting and surprising assertions that swim against the vast majority of Christian thinking for two-thousand years (95).Stephen Wykstra, professor of philosophy at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, explicates skeptical theism. This particular outlook is not quite so alarming as the name might imply. As Wykstra notes, “so-called skeptical theism relies strongly on what I’ve here called “conditional theistic humility” – an affirmation that if the theistic God does exist (that is, if mere theism is true), then it is pretty unsurprising that the divine purposes for God’s “actions” will often be beyond our ken. This conditional, modest as it is, removes the sting from some evidential arguments that might otherwise seem lethal to theism” (117). Of all the chapters, Wykstra’s is the most abstract for the non-philosophically trained reader, and yet it is, concurrently, very human and personal.Once all of the authors have unrolled and displayed their wares, then each gets the opportunity to walk around and point out the weaknesses and potential compatibilities of the other exhibits. It’s in the final section that it becomes clear how three of the positions can actually walk close together (classic, Molinist and skeptical theism) and how the other two are near cousins (open theism and essential kenosis). Each response essay is brief and curated into a single chapter. For example, Cary’s response essay interacts with Craig, Hasker, Oord, and Wykstra in a single chapter. In my experience, the format of the book hasn’t provided as much room for interaction, and actually, makes the book more difficult to navigate then if the each response followed the positive presentation in the first section (e.g. each contributor interacts with a single view immediately following the positive presentation). Consequently, while the content of the interaction between the views is helpful, it is rather brief and sometimes seems outright dismissive (e.g. Hasker’s interaction with Carey). That said this is the biggest shortcoming to an otherwise excellent display of scholarly engagement on a very important and far reaching theological topic.God and the Problem of Evil: Five Views edited by Chad Meister and James K. Dew Jr. offers an up-to-date engagement with the current landscape on one of the most theologically problematic questions to meet the modern age: if an all-loving and all-powerful God exists, then why is there so much evil in the world? The book is a time capsule of the 70s and it shows how much things have changed and how little.

THIS REVIEW ADDRESSES ERRORS IN THE BOOK, NOT THE BOOK CONTENT. OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF THE SAME THING, BUT I WANTED TO ADD MY OPINION.Many words in this book have been "replaced" by auto-correction with incorrect words. It is distracting and irritating, there are so many!! For example, a chapter should be called "Mittelschmerz" -- it was replaced by ETHELMERTZ. She is a character from the old I Love Lucy show!! Ridiculous!! This is just one example of many in the book. I imagine the problem lies with the publisher. I haven't had this problem with other Kindle books, some from the same publisher. With the prices of the Kindle books being about the same as a physical book, this is unacceptable. This makes Amazon look bad. This is the 4th book in a series of 9. I planned to read them all, but am afraid that some of them will be like this one. It is very difficult to enjoy the book with so many errors.Amazon outsourcing customer service is not working well, in my case. I was told to re-download the book, and of course it is the same. I was promised a $5.00 credit as a gesture of "good will." I have not received that credit. This is my worst experience with Amazon. It is probably a publishing mistake, but to sell the Kindle books at physical book price and have these errors is UNACCEPTABLE.I bet the author would not take kindly to having his words mangled!!! I may write him about it. At this point I want my money back.

I remember when this was running in the San Francisco _Chronicle_ as a serial. (Not to be confused with _The Serial_, which ran in the _Chron_ a year or so earlier and was about Marin County...) I chose not to read it then, though we _had_ a subscription to the _Comical_; I read a few columns and didn't get into it.So what is it?_Tales_ chronicles (see what I did there?) the lives, loves, lusts, heartbreaks, and minor irritations of a dozen or so people living in and around San Francisco in the mid-to-late 1970s.Most of the characters center around 28 Barbary Lane, a small apartment house run by one Anna Madrigal. Mrs. (she insists on it though, she says, she's never been married) Madrigal is a motherly, free-spirited woman who grows weed in the back yard and names all the plants. (We eventually learn, or _may_ learn, that she has Secrets and that her name is an anagram (of what?).)What it is, then, is, well, a soap opera. The serialized format turns into chapters of (usually) three or four pages, each of which extends the stories of (typically) one or two of the major characters. Like a soap opera - but also like Dickens, for Heaven's sake - the plot runs heavily on coincidence. One character's gynecologist turns out to be another's love interest, that sort of thing.Give Maupin credit for this: his characters run a fairly wide spectrum of social "levels," from the unemployed to the millionaire social-register class, and, somehow, they all interact plausibly if not quite believably. Each is motivated by their own personal and social imperatives, and we learn enough of their motivations to empathize with them - with the exception of Mrs. Madrigal , who remains a delicious mystery.The writing is light and fluffy and humorous without ever descending into satire or silliness, either of which would rob the characters of their identities.It's enjoyable enough that I read it in two days, but I don't feel particularly compelled to read the (8) sequels.

Hampstead Maupin was politically incorrect before anyone had ever heard the term-and unapologetically so. The author writes about the LGBTQ culture in the early 1970's San Francisco when gay was the term that included a transsexual landlady, homosexual male tenant who aspired to be a kept woman, a Fundamentalist set of parents who couldn't see the forest for the trees when they came from Florida to visit their son, a female fashion model who identified as black so that she would be more marketable even though both biological parents were Lily white, a lesbian tenant who wanted to revive her relationship with the black model, a homosexual male OBGYN WHO had a sexual encounter with a virile captain of industry whose wife had just come to see the doctor about getting an abortion, and tying everything together is an innocent young Secretary from Cleveland who quickly discovered that she and her little dog Toto were no longer in Kansas. If you are able to set aside your preconceived prejudices for a short while, you are in for the ride of your life. There are five more books in Maupin's Tales of the City series, but I might just stop where I finished at the end of the first book because the other five could not possibly be as much fun.

How did I manage to come this far in life without having discovered Armistead Maupins wonderful city, characters, stories? In.way, however, I’m sort glad am sort of glad I’m just now discovering, because I can binge read them all at once, without having to endure the wait time between publications. SO hooked for the next six books!
